For those of us in the United States, the autumn holidays can also be seen as Colonization season, with the dominant culture celebrating occasions like Columbus Day and Thanksgiving, both of which have direct ties to settler colonialism and the suffering of Indigenous people. In this edition of The Quieted Mind, James leads us in a recitation of the Haundenosaunee Thanksgiving Address. Despite the title, this address has no connection to the North American Thanksgiving holidays. It is an invocation recited at the opening and closing of religious and cultural meetings among people of the Haudenosaunee (also known as the Iroquois Confederacy or Six Nations). In reciting it, the Haudenosaunee express and reaffirm their gratitude for life, the world around them, and the interconnectedness of all things. Join with us in honoring the Haundenosaunee people and decolonizing our understanding of Thanksgiving as we feed and nourish seeds of love and gratitude.

On this episode we're pausing to ponder the particular seed of truth on the topic of cherry picking itself.
I invite YOU, cherry cobbler congregants, to drop me a voicemail or a text at 980.355.9665. Tell me about one of your own favorite practices - pretty please with a cherry on top!

James of Quieted Mind offers a dharma talk exploring the change of seasons, that for some of us, can bring to the surface any number of thoughts and emotions. Times like these are a perfect opportunity to stop and breathe, to unite our body and mind as we acknowledge that our true home is the here and now. In that lull between summer fun and the hustle and bustle of the holidays, and even in the midst of these things, we can always return to our true home. This is the heart of our practice.

After a string of holiday episodes and a summer break, on this episode we're returning to our exploration of maintaining our mystic in the mundane of our everyday messy, muddled lives. Whatever we may be cherry picking that works for us, it is important to maintain the balance of being sure it is indeed working for us. That we are using the practice, and not the other way around. When the practice uses us, we're on the path to fundamentalism.

On this Queer Pride episode, I'm sharing my own coming out story. Our stories matter. As I’ve continued to do this podcast I’ve realized my story matters not because it’s extraordinary, but because it’s like so many of yours, and your stories matter. In this sharing of our truth, we can find safety in each other, as one of my favorite Black Non- Binary artists Kah Yangni illustrates. I celebrated my partnership in a ceremony in 2011 when I never thought I’d see legalization of gay marriage in my lifetime. Then it came, and we had a small ceremony in 2016. I wrote my coming out story on the end of that weekend, and I had the privilege to share it in a diversity story slam. Cheers Queers!

On this episode we’re taking on the challenge of how to squeeze in our practice when it just seems like it’s impossible, and, how other people help us do just that!

Hey Y'all! Grace here. If you, like me, have survived fundamentalism, I welcome you to this wholly irreverent space. A sanctuary of sorts for those of us who have broken free from all kinds of…
Often in the process of deconstruction, we find ourselves left with a void held for the casseroles and the cobblers. You know, the dishes dropped off on our doorstep during challenging times as an expression of care and belonging. As we build this community, I look forward to satisfying that longing by writing new recipes together and gathering each episode to break digital bread.
Wrestling with and reveling in our reconstruction, we explore many perspectives, sharing stories from all walks of life - creating functional beauty and discovering practical magic right in the midst of the messy, the muddled, and the mundane. Join us as we unashamedly and unabashedly cherry-pick ancient and modern practices to find out what works best for you and me in our daily lives.
On this podcast, I invite you to reconsider both mediocrity (and the way it makes the world go ‘round) and spirituality (and the way it works in mysterious ways).
