And today I’m super honored to have Dr. Rachel Fresco in the house, and she is the founder and CEO of one of my favorite companies out there, Bio-Botanical Research, that just so happens to help individuals support their immune systems, supporting people with gut issues, longterm Lyme disease co-infections, mold illness, you name it. This company has been around the block and is supporting individuals, maybe worldwide, I know US-wide, and practitioners as well to be able to immune proof ourselves from the inside out.

So, Dr. Rachel Fresco, thanks so much for coming on. And if you could just give us a little bit of background about who you are and what got you doing the work you’re doing in the world. 

Dr. Rachel: [00:01:22] Thank you, Dr. Lauryn. I started out as an acupuncturist actually. I graduated from acupuncture school in 1987 and I was working at Connor Company, which is a Chinese herb company, helping the practitioners understand how to use the Chinese herbs. Right at that time, the beginning of the AIDS epidemic was happening and suddenly people were dealing with opportunistic infections. And so I had some formulas that I’ve been working with and one of the doctors that I had sent it to Genova Diagnostics, which is back then called Great Smokies Diagnostic Labs.

And the owner of the lab called me up and he goes, you know, I don’t know who you are, or what this is, but it kills everything. And we want to put it on our comprehensive digestive stool analysis panel. And so he explained to me about how the culture, the stool from the patient’s sample, and find out what yeast and bacteria that patients might have.

And today super pumped to have my gut sister in crime, Grace Liu in the house who is a pharmacist by training, gone gut goddess and just really helping people heal and seal their gut microbiome. Understand the importance of the gut microbiome to our total health. And even our, hormonal and female health. Today, we may be talking about stinky vaginas, which has been a common topic, of late conversation, I know in Grace’s circle, but anything and everything you want to know about the gut, grace is your go-to girl. And she is the founder of the Gut Institute.

So Grace, thanks so much for coming on. I know we’ve chatted before on the podcast. Happy to have you back. And if you could just bring our listeners up to speed about who you are and what got you doing the work you’re doing in the world.

Grace: [00:00:58] Absolutely. I’m the founder of the Gut Institute. And I used to be super healthy. I used to do triathlons and CrossFit, and ran like a lot of half marathons, long distance running. And then I got really ill. It was a combination of a lot of things, mostly pharmaceuticals. So being a pharmacist, it just didn’t make sense to stay in pharmacy.

I had actually changed fields and I was really grateful and glad, you know, I knew a lot of functional medicine leaders and they kind of recruited me and took me under their wing. It was really cool. And I became pretty up to speed with functional medicine and we teach actually a lot of our protocols now to health coaches and clinicians, because there’s an easier way to do things.

I think functional medicine is awesome. I love it. It’s super helped my health. But there are a lot of intricacies and I would say probably functional medicine is about 50 years behind the microbiome literature for studies and many other things. So we want to bring people up to speed with the safest protocols without decimating the gut.

Cause that’s the problem. You know, we have epic health conditions and mold problems and as, as well as many other problems. Breastmilk problems and vaginal health problems and, you know, everything. What we want to do is like reset the whole terrain of the body and terrain of the microbiome from tongue to toes, and then help people reset their HPAT axis as fast as possible.

And this is how we get the best results. Our particular specialty is we are a boutique probiotic store. I formulate probiotics.

And today we are bringing you a power hour on mold toxicity and overcoming mold toxicity, which has been a big part of both of our journeys. I mean, I would say like in the process of overcoming mold toxicity, it is a beast for sure. But we’re here to give you both hope and inspiration for one, as well as just school you on what is mold toxicity.

When I used to hear that word mold prior to undergoing a mold illness and experiencing it myself, I used to just think, well, how could that be so bad? Or like, okay,

And today I’m super honored to have Julie Michelson in the house, and she is an autoimmunity wellness expert, and functional medicine certified health coach, who’s really been seeing skyrocketing results with her clients right now, during a time in the world where we may feel some instability in our health with COVID and also just quarantine perhaps just at home unending schedules and eating foods that you may not usually eat. Or just lifestyle habits, getting a new rhythm that hasn’t really existed before. So it can maybe feel counterintuitive to some people for a healthy routine, but Julie Michelson and her work has really been seeing quite the opposite. So I’m really excited to have this conversation with her today. And just to talk about how you can really use this time to maximize. Your health and the opportunities for you ahead.

Julie, thanks so much for coming on, and if you could just give us a little bit of background on who you are and what got you doing the work that you’re doing in the world.

Julie: [00:01:11] Sure. Thanks, Lauren. I’m so happy to be here. I like so many of us came to functional medicine and the wellness world through my own health struggles and journey. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis when I was in my early thirties and I spent a year – a year, a decade, I wish it was a year. I spent a decade in decline, just accumulating medications, and more diagnoses.

I’m doing all of the things that my brilliant Western medicine docs told me to do, but unfortunately just wasn’t getting better and was told actually that there was no, I hope to get better. So that, that wasn’t even something that should be on my radar. So thank goodness I did my own discovery and learning and experimenting and did heal all of my autoimmune symptoms and that drove my passion to educate, you know, get educated and train so that I can help others so that everybody knows that they can heal.

Dr. Lauryn: [00:02:11] Yeah. What were your discoveries? Because similarly, I kind of found functional medicine through not necessarily like just on Dr. Google, reading a lot of blogs though, and such, and it’s really cool to see the movement now because there’s people like you and more functional medicine practitioners popping up where perhaps people don’t have to have that long drawn out journey to finding a different path.

But what did that path look like for getting out of your RA and busting through ceilings in your health?

Julie: [00:02:39] So for me, yes, it was a, it was a long and crooked journey, a lot of trial and error. And I started mostly with, with just diet change after diet change, just trying new things. By the time I was grain-free and paleo, the step that really, for me, dietary wise was a breakthrough, was finding Dave Asprey and Bulletproof, because I’d been on a low-fat diet my whole life and it wasn’t until understanding the why of, you know, how important healthy fats are and shifting my mindset around fat consumption that I was able to fully start to really heal.

Dr. Lauryn: [00:03:20] Yeah, I love that. So, I call it the light bulb moment. And we all have ours and it’s usually the anecdote to what we were doing before. That’s the catalyst. So let’s kind of dive right into it. So right now you’re working a lot with auto-immune within ...

You know, I was actually saving the whole planet back in the nineties. I was in environmental law, so I was working on, you know, saving the birds and bees and air and water and trees and, and you name it, you know, really on a mission and you know, realizing in having studied how bad the environment is, I started to wonder, you know, I’m looking at dead fish and birds and going well, what’s it doing to people? You know, what’s happening to us? And you know, not just other people, but me. You know, and I didn’t have a health problem. Most people get into the health business, especially health coaching, they have a personal health problem. They overcame it, you know, the hero’s journey, and then now they help others like them.

Dr. Lauryn: [00:00:43] Give us a little bit of background about the work you’re doing in the world, and really what got you into this world of women’s hormones as well.

Dr. Shawn: [00:00:52] Real quick. I went into OB-GYN. I think it was initially, you know, you’re 27 when you when I decided that, cause that’s when I ended medical school give or take and you have to make this big lifetime decision about what you’re going to do and what profession you’re going to pick. And I found that that specialty primarily is very nice. It’s very, uh, pleasant. There aren’t a lot of deaths, obviously. There are babies being born. It’s a happy kind of profession. For surgery, obviously on the GYN side, so that’s kind of more my mindset, is if I find a problem, I want to fix it. I just fit that.

And then I looked at the other doctors that were in each of the fields that I liked, and I kind of just fit in better with that kind of specialty. You know, the surgeons were a little more aggressive. The internists were a little bit more, you know,

And today we have Dr. Brian Rade in the house. And Dr. Rade Is a naturopathic doctor who is living in Nova Scotia. And he is part of the Nova Scotia Association of Naturopathic Doctors up there, running a clinic where he specializes in complex chronic illness. So seeing patients from mold illness to chronic co-infections, mold, Lyme, integrative oncology, autism spectrum, pans, and pandas… you name it he’s seen it and really dove in to help individuals find the best version of themselves beyond illness. And Dr. Rade has also really taken an affinity to looking at what our mitochondria function can do for healing not only from complex chronic illness but paying attention to our mitochondria function for a variety of health imbalances that we may experience.

[00:01:51] Dr. Bryan Rade: [00:01:51] All right. Sounds good. It’s nice to chat with you today, Lauryn. Well, I got interested in sort of complementary and alternative medicine back when I was a teenager. I had some chronic health issues, myself, chronic digestive issues. And as a generally happens, when you’re a young person and you’re feeling unwell, your parents bring you to the family doctor and up to that point, any malady that came my way, there was some pill or solution for that. And in this case, they just couldn’t figure anything out and basically told me to live with it. So thankfully my mom had a library at home, basically of different books on complementary and alternative medicine, and I out of desperation just started looking at some of those and got really fascinated with the world of complementary and alternative medicine. And that was just a natural segue into becoming a naturopathic doctor.

[00:02:38] In terms of treating patients with complex chronic illness, that just started for me about nine years ago or so, where a patient came in with persistent symptoms following a Lyme disease diagnosis. She was treated with antibiotics.
