Mary Moriarty served as chief public defender of the largest county here in Minnesota from 2014 to 2020, where she oversaw 38,000 cases per year and 120 public defenders. Before that, she served as a public defender for the county for 25 years. Mary is a passionate activist and has garnered much deserved praise for not only her tenure as chief public defender but as an outspoken advocate for systemic reform.

Mary is a well-respected voice on issues of criminal justice reform. She’s been featured on CNN, MPR, MSNBC, USA Today, and The Today Show to name a few.

CeCe Gaines is an Emmy award-winning journalist who enjoys telling stories that matter to the community. She’s currently the morning and midday anchor at KBJR 6 in Duluth, MN. When Gaines isn’t anchoring, producing, or writing stories, you can find her setting up her next story. 

In this episode, we talk about news media story creation and how a story on the street becomes what you see on your screen. We talk about the Chauvin trial and why it's important people of color have representation in the media.

I created this podcast because I believe some of the biggest things we lack in society are tolerance, patience, and empathy. My hope behind the podcast is to engage with people from a multitude of backgrounds and disciplines in hopes of gaining perspective. Some of our conversations will be heavy, and we’ll challenge the way we think about things. And some of it will be light. We’ll talk about everything from police-community relations to marriage to fatherhood.
