  • Winter's Bone - 2010 with Russell Garrett
WHAT IS THE CHAINSAW FOR??? This week, we took a journey to Forsythe, Missouri back in 2010 and watched the film that landed JLaw her first Oscar Nom - Winter's Bone! We are joined by friend of the pod, friend in real life, and a key part of the Drafty Quarters Podcast Network -- Russell Garrett! We discuss the amazing performances, along with discussions about how the film treats women, if this is a coming of age story or a hero's journey, and of course, that ending--as well as the class questions and cycles of crime that the film practically begged us to talk about! We also go on several extremely random tangents that are pretty awesome!

  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers - 1978 with Rachel Reeves
This week we decided to go "New Year, New You" and cover the terrifying and relevant classic remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. We are joined by a very special guest, Rachel Reeves, a journalist specializing in horror films and film music, in addition to co-hosting The Losers Club: A Stephen King Podcast and The Pod and the Pendulum, which covers the wild world of horror film franchises! We discuss the masterful use of sound (and silence) in the film, what it's like to feel like a movie is staring at you during its runtime, that terrifying ending, how disgusting that mud bath house is, and whether or not we were the Pod People all along. (Also, everyone tweet at Shawn @murphthesmurph to get him to watch Shiva Baby)

  • Bonus: Our Favorites of 2022

We decided to do a fun little bonus episode for the beginning of 2023 and go over our top 10 lists of TV, Horror, and Film! Keep in mind, this isn't exactly a "best of" list, just our personal favesies that we experienced! We also give our favorite Pop Culture Moment of 2022, AND give a little taste of what we are looking forward to the most in 2023!

  • Fried Green Tomatoes - 1991 with Kendall Walton

This week, we are joined by friend of the pod - Kendall Walton, broadcast journalist and LGBT+ activist - and together we cover a listener request, Fried Green Tomatoes from 1991! We talk about the iffy accent work (including one of our own) and Kendall schools us on the meaning of 'Church Biscuits' among heavier topics such as gender expression and identity and a possible trans reading on the story. We might go on an extended tangent about Weeds. We also all wish Kathy Bates was our best friend (she has full sized candy bars in her purse!) and don't worry, we do get into the people eating of it all along with THAT ending. Towanda!

  • While You Were Sleeping - 1995 with Ari Drew

For Christmas this year, we watched the 1995 rom-com Christmas classic for the ages - While You Were Sleeping! And we have writer, podcaster, and all around great guy Ari Drew to help us dissect what makes this one so special! We discuss Sandra Bullock's pitch perfect performance, imagine the casting that almost was, and even compare this film to Get Out (you'll have to listen to find out why)! Bill Pullman could get it in this movie in his tighty-whities. We somehow talk about Drop Dead Gorgeous? Twice? Basically, if this podcast episode were mashed potatoes -- it would be so creamy.

  • Bonus: An Interview with Josh Ruben
We've got an extremely special bonus episode for you this month -- we got the opportunity to talk with Josh Ruben, you know, the director of a little movie called Werewolves Within you might have heard of; writer, director, and star of one of Clayton's personal favorites - Scare Me; and has not one but TWO movies that just came out as well -- Blood Relatives in which he plays a supporting role and also wore a producer hat and also the mesmerizing A Wounded Fawn in which he stars! Basically, dream conversation! Aaaaand for those of you who stick around till the very end, he gives Clayton a birthday present performance for the ages that you won't want to miss!

  • The Nightmare Before Christmas - 1993 with Kristin Fugate

This week we watched HENRY SELICK'S The Nightmare Before Christmas along with friend of the Pod Kristin Fugate! We get pretty into it. We have very serious discussions on the other doors, Sally's characterization and...uh...relationship with her creator, and tangents on 4K, Coraline, and even The Ten Commandments if you can believe it (young Brenner and Heston could GET IT!)

We also have intro music now! Composed just for us by Jerry Smith!!! We think it's pretty awesome!

  • Anna and the Apocalypse - 2017 (Festival Cut) with Review it Yourself

This week we traveled to Scotland for a movie full of singing, dancing...and zombies...at Christmas? Basically we watched the brilliant Anna and the Apocalypse from 2017. We also have returning guest Sean from Review it Yourself! Spoiler alert - we all really loved this! We go on tangents about physical media, kink culture...in Walmart...and even play a little game involving Beyonce, Rihanna, and Miley... It's fun and has a lot of heart - just like the movie! If you haven't seen this one, you're seriously missing out! It's a Christmas staple! So grab your giant metal candy cane and get ready to sing your way through the end of the world and hit play!

  • Black Christmas - 1974 with Terry Mesnard

This week Shawn and Clayton revisited the absolutely chilling Black Christmas - 1974 version - with a little help from Gayly Dreadful and Scarred for Life's own Terry Mesnard! We discuss how effective the film is, in all its parts, Clayton naturally brings up Chicago (the musical) and we all agree that (gasp) this movie is far better than Halloween and did it first.

  • Josie and the Pussycats - 2001 with Caroline Boisvert-Storey
This week Shawn and Clayton go to Riverdale back in 2001 and see Josie and the Pussycats and their meteoric rise to fame in this biting satire on consumerism - and it’s really funny, too! Along for the ride we have friend of the pod Caroline Boisvert-Storey! Up for discussion, aside from the body glitter, is the importance of individuality, how silly chasing trends can be, and how Parker Posey is iconic in feathers. If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands!
