Nothing divided the classroom like a group assignment . While the intention might of been teamwork its outcome was always pure anarchy. And it was in the throes of such scholastic chaos that a lone middle schooler stared into the brink of a reading level far beyond her classmate’s comprehension. To most of us, 1994’s THE SHADOW is best remembered as the first half of this sentence. We might think of Alec Baldwin. We might think of fedora hats. We might think the scene in the pneumatic tube went on a little too long. What we’re not thinking about is the rejuvenating benefits of Eastern meditation. In the mid ‘90s, Marvel cloned Spiderman, DC fridged a girlfriend and Image broke basic anatomy through spandex. Yes, these issues had issues, but not every comic was a splash page of misogyny word bubbled by gimmicks. For a young Sara Century, this same decade offered a glimpse of empowerment through a Generation X cover shot of Emma Frost. But comics weren’t easy for this kid to come by, and the resulting quest both sparked a passion and predicted the plight of a life-long infatuation. So let’s back board that back issue and collect our own thoughts on what Sara has to ‘nuff say about this.

Nothing soothed the six hour stress of a middle school education like the latch-key promise of afternoon cartoons. Seated there in the private screening room of a converted basement we could loose ourselves in the animated antics of Gummi bears, Cadillac cats, and Hell-spawned Cow Skull demons. Bob Canning has a sweet tooth for a single letter of the alphabet. Twice. But what started as a candy crush in grade school sugared into an actual affliction by college. Much of this indulgence was imparted by his dealer at the time, a plastic, desk-mounted dispenser in the shape of the Yellow M&M mascot.
