Pilate turns over Jesus to be beaten by the Romans.  The legal non-Roman citizen limit was 39 lashes, but this was not a typical beating.  Jesus was beaten beyond recognition, causing him to die earlier than expected. The cross references to the Old Testament tell the bigger story and speak to the divine exchange as Jesus is illegally beaten to release healing.

Jesus stands before Pontius Pilate and states "he is not of this world, and everyone of the truth knows this." Pilate's response, "what is truth?" Justice is defined as "getting what you deserve according to the law." The religious leaders, in an illegal trial, condemned Jesus to death. The religious leaders would get what they deserve as justice would befall them, Jesus would get what he deserved as he stepped into the place of the lamb, yet we would not get what we deserve--GRACE!

In this action oriented scene and Parallel Bible student's dream, Jesus is betrayed with a kiss by Judas.  Upon his betrayal, Peter puts up a fight and cuts off Malchus' ear.
