Love and Torah – what’s love got to do with it? This study series is based on the “Two Great Commands” – love Yahweh and love your neighbor.

In Ephesians 5, Rabbi Steve Berkson continues teaching us about how to love each other. Stopping at verse 1 he expounds on becoming imitators of Elohim as dear children.

In verse 2 we are exhorted to walk in love as Messiah also loved us, giving of ourselves to others as a gift to Elohim. Do you want to send up a “sweet smelling aroma” to Yahweh? Learn to serve others.

In verses 3 and 4 we see a list of behaviors that should not even be named among the Body of Messiah. Rabbi Berkson takes some time to clarify one of those behaviors – uncleanness.

What do these behaviors have to do with loving each other?

In verse 5 there is something that we are expected to know – what is it we should know? Why should we know it?

In verse 6 Rabbi Berkson asks why Paul would write about “empty words”. What are they? Why are we cautioned about them? How have some teachers misconstrued the meaning of “empty words”? How do they affect our inheritance in the Kingdom of Elohim?

In verses 7 through 10 Rabbi Berkson asks us the question, “Who are you trying to please?”

Rabbi Berkson once again dissects the words in these passages so that you will have a deeper understanding of what Yah expects of you, so that you can do it and receive the blessings.

How does one become an imitator? What things about Elohim should we imitate? What are the two ways to become an imitator?

Love and Torah – what’s love got to do with it? This study series is based on the “Two Great Commands” – love Yahweh and love your neighbor.

Continuing our journey of the second of the Two Great Commands, ‘love your neighbor’, Rabbi Steve Berkson takes us to Luke 6:38 where we see Messiah Yeshua continuing to show us the contrast between what Rabbi Berkson calls “the Below” and “the Above”. He points out that in order to please the Father, you must be aligned with “the Above”.

A component of loving Yahweh and your neighbor is giving. What does that mean though? Rabbi Berkson clarifies how, when and why as pertaining to giving. He also points out an incentive to give, that whatever we give would be returned pressed down, shaken together and running over. Rabbi Berkson uses his trip to a Baskin-Robbins™ ice cream store to make the point.

In Luke 6:39-40 Messiah Yeshua tells a parable of the blind leading the blind. Rabbi Berkson cautions and warns about where and from whom you get your information as you walk in Torah observance. There’s a lot of misinformation out there that presents itself with authority.

In verse 41 Yeshua teaches about the plank in your eye and the splinter in your brother’s eye. Rabbi Berkson expounds on how some people take the knowledge about Torah and use it as a weapon to try and “help” others with their walk. “Correction can only happen correctly in the right relationship.”

Then in Luke 6:47-49 Rabbi Berkson tells us our lives are like we are building a house. Are we building with the correct foundation or without? The key is whether or not we are listening and doing the words of Messiah.

The greatest relationship any of us should invest in is with our trustworthy Creator. He has a plan for our lives that includes a ‘process’. If we trust Him, we will trust the process. The process will cause us to become the people the Creator wants to live with forever.

Before we can trust the process we must correctly understand the definition of ‘trust’. We must understand what it means to be ‘trustworthy’, because only those who are considered ‘trustworthy’ will enter the Kingdom of Elohim. Those who are not are cast into outer darkness where there is “weeping and gnashing of teeth”, away from the Creator’s presence.

Each of us have been given an ability by which the Creator can test our ‘trustworthiness’. That ability will be revealed to us at the right time, in the right circumstances.
