There is magic in every beginning. Socrates is such a beginning for Western philosophy. Before him, too, there was philosophizing, but with Socrates, as we read in the historiography of philosophy, philosophical reflection takes on a different twist.
But this Socrates knew above all that he knew nothing...and then also in the most important questions of the life! We have asked Dorothea Frede, what makes this philosopher so special, that all thinkers before him were even subsumed under the term "pre-Socratics" and no following generation can get around this Athenian troublemaker.

Doch dieser Sokrates wusste doch vor allem, dass er nichts weiß...und dann auch noch in den wichtigsten Fragen des Lebens! Wir haben Dorothea Frede gefragt, was diesen Philosophen so besonders macht, dass man gar alle Denker vor ihm unter den Begriff "Vorsokratiker" fasste und keine folgende Generation mehr um diesen athenischen Störenfried herumkommt.

Der Zen-Buddhismus besteht nicht allein in weisen Sprüchen oder einfacher Unbekümmertheit. Er ist harte Arbeit, bisweilen strenges Ritual, wiederholte Übung und Lektüre. Davon zeugt auch das Leben von Dōgen Zenji, Autor des Shōbōgenzō und Begründer des Sōtō-Zen in Japan, wie wir von Raji Steineck erfahren.
Im Zentrum des Shōbōgenzō steht die buddhistische Lehre, dass alles unbeständig ist und die Frage danach, wie dann das richtige Leben auszusehen hat. Dōgens Antwort: Alles hat schon seiner Anlage nach Buddhanatur (Die Anlage zur Erleuchtung sozusagen.). Die Erleuchtung realisiert sich aber erst durch konsequente Übung und ethischer Orientierung an anderen erleuchteten Wesen.

Zen Buddhism is not just wise sayings or simple mindlessness. It is hard work, sometimes rigorous ritual, repeated practice and reading. The life of Dōgen Zenji, author of the Shōbōgenzō and founder of Sōtō Zen in Japan, bears witness to this, as we learn from Raji Steineck.
At the center of the Shōbōgenzō is the Buddhist teaching that everything is impermanent and the question of what then the right life should look like. Dōgen's answer: everything already has Buddha nature by design (The design for enlightenment, so to speak.). Enlightenment, however, is realized only through consistent practice and ethical orientation toward other enlightened beings.

Ibn Hazms Werk ist ein gelehrter Text, Erfahrungsspiegel, Kommentar und poetisches Werk in einem. Vermutlich geschrieben in Gefangenschaft, wendet sich der Autor einem Thema besserer Zeiten zu. Aber auch die Liebe ist, wer wüsste das nicht, ein Ort der Projektionen, Sehnsüchte, Hoffnungen und Enttäuschungen. Das Werk ist erstaunlich aktuell und lebt von der scharfen Beobachtungsgabe Ibn Hazms.

Ibn Hazm's work is a learned text, a mirror of experience, a commentary and a poetic work all in one. Probably written in captivity, the author turns to a subject of better times. But love, who would not know, is also a place of projections, longings, hopes and disappointments. The work is astonishingly modern and thrives on Ibn Hazm's keen powers of observation.

Frederike Maas und Michael Hampe sprechen mit Kai Marchal von der National Cheng Chi University (Taipeh) über die beiden Hauptwerke des Daoismus (Daodejing & Zhuangzi) und deren Wirkung auf das Leben von Daoistinnen und Daoisten. Was ist eigentlich das Dao, von dem dort die Rede ist? Wo kann ich es finden? Muss ich es überhaupt suchen?
Im Daoismus fallen  Parallelen zur europäischen Skepsis ins Auge, nach der man sich für ein gelingendes Leben möglichst befreien sollte von abhängig machenden Behauptungen und nicht einlösbaren Wissensansprüchen.

In this edition of METIS Wisdom Talks we focus on the teaching of the Way, Daoism. This is a Chinese way of thinking and living, which has already spread far beyond the regions of Southeast Asia into the world through the philosophers Laozi and Zhuangzi.
Frederike Maas and Michael Hampe talk with Kai Marchal from the National Cheng Chi University (Taipei) about the two main works of Daoism (Daodejing & Zhuangzi) and their impact on the lives of Daoists. What actually is the Dao that is talked about there? Where can I find it? Do I have to search for it at all?
In Daoism, parallels to European skepticism stand out, according to which one should free oneself as much as possible from dependency-creating claims and irredeemable knowledge claims for a successful life.

In diesem Podcast versuchen wir einen Einstieg in die große Geisteswelt des islamischen Denkens und dessen Weisheitstraditionen zu finden.
Fernab von Behauptungen abgeschlossener kultureller Identitäten ist "die" europäische Kultur ohne den vielfältigen islamischen Einfluss gar nicht denkbar. D.h. sie würde in der heutigen Form nicht existieren.
Ohne die Übersetzungsleistungen islamischer Denker, deren Kommentare und Deutungen wäre eine europäische Auseinandersetzung mit der griechischen Antike nicht möglich gewesen.
Zum Glück durfte unsere Interviewerin Anna Morawietz mit  Nadja Germann, Professorin für arabische Philosophie in Freiburg, über die Vielfalt der islamischen bzw. arabischen Weisheitstraditionen sprechen. Der Koran steht natürlich im Zentrum dieser Traditionen. Dass islamische Philosophie sich auf Koranexegese reduzieren lässt, wäre allerdings eine sinnlose Verkürzung.
Ähnlich dem Buddhismus finden sich in bestimmten Schulen des islamischen Denkens Meditationsformen, die helfen sollen das Bewusstsein zu schulen und so das Leben zu letztlich zu einem besseren zu machen. Daneben existieren Denker, welche die wichtigsten Formen des Wissen und der Weisheit im sozialen Austausch, im Miteinander sehen.

In this podcast we try to find an entry into the great intellectual world of Islamic thought and its wisdom traditions.
Far away from claims of closed cultural identities, "the" European culture is not even conceivable without the manifold Islamic influence. I.e. it would not exist in its present form.
Without the translation services of Islamic thinkers, their commentaries and interpretations, a European confrontation with Greek antiquity would not have been possible.
Fortunately, our interviewer Anna Morawietz was allowed to speak with Nadja Germann, professor of Arabic philosophy in Freiburg, about the diversity of Islamic or Arabic wisdom traditions. The Koran is, of course, at the center of these traditions. That Islamic philosophy can be reduced to Koranic exegesis, however, would be a senseless reduction.
Similar to Buddhism, certain schools of Islamic thought include forms of meditation that are intended to help train consciousness and thus ultimately make life a better one. In addition, there are thinkers who see the most important forms of knowledge and wisdom in social exchange, in togetherness.

Das Alte Ägypten ruft bei vielen Menschen Bilder von Pyramiden, der Sphinx und Mumien hervor. Im Zusammenhang mit Weisheit denkt man womöglich an ein uraltes und geheimes Wissen dieser untergegangenen Hochkultur.
Die Auseinandersetzung mit den Weisheitstraditionen des Alten Ägyptens lohnt sich im höchsten Maße  und das nicht, weil man dort auf Schätze eines vermeintlichen goldenen Zeitalters trifft.
Frederike Maas spricht mit dem Ägyptologen Jan Assmann darüber, was wir von den alten Ägyptern lernen können. Deren Weisheitsverständnis ist gepaart mit einem Menschenbild, in dem Gemeinschaft und soziale Einbindung alles bedeuten. Wer im Leben den Problemen seiner Mitmenschen nicht ausreichend Gehör schenkt, sich selbst in den Vordergrund stellt, etc., den erwartet der soziale Tod, das Vergessen.

The examination of the wisdom traditions of Ancient Egypt is highly worthwhile, and not because one encounters there the treasures of a supposed golden age.
Frederike Maas talks to Egyptologist Jan Assmann about what we can learn from the ancient Egyptians. Their understanding of wisdom is coupled with a view of humanity in which community and social integration mean everything. Whoever does not pay sufficient attention to the problems of his fellow human beings in life, puts himself in the foreground, etc., can expect social death, oblivion.

"Stoa for Managers", "Stoa for Employees", "Stoa for Beginners", ... Books promising help and training by means of stoic thoughts and exercises abound. Especially in the English-speaking world, the Stoa is more popular than many other wisdom traditions.
Does the Stoa really have something to offer for everyone? Eliane Schmid and Michael Hampe talk about the ancient origins of the Stoa and what characterizes a Stoic person.
Today's Stoic guides to life often refer to three well-known figures whose writings still survive: Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius. A Roman senator, a slave, and a Roman emperor. The podcast discusses the lives of the three and explains how distinctive features of the Stoa were formed in them.
The Stoa may have something for everyone, but that doesn't mean it has the best answer for every circumstance.

"Stoa für Manager", "Stoa für Angestellte", "Stoa für Anfänger", ... Bücher, welche Abhilfe und Schulung mittels stoischer Gedanken und Übungen versprechen gibt es zuhauf. Gerade im englischsprachigen Raum ist die Stoa populärer als viele andere Weisheitstraditionen.
Hat die Stoa tatsächlich für jedermann etwas zu bieten? Eliane Schmid und Michael Hampe sprechen über die antiken Ursprünge der Stoa und darüber, was einen stoischen Menschen charakterisiert.
Die heutigen stoischen Lebensratgeber beziehen sich häufig auf drei bekannte Figuren, deren Schriften noch erhalten sind: Seneca, Epiktet und Marcus Aurelius. Ein römischer Senator, ein Sklave und ein römischer Kaiser. Im Podcast werden die Leben der drei besprochen und erklärt, wie sich in ihnen Besonderheiten der Stoa ausgeprägt haben.

Zusammen mit Kai Marchal schauen wir auf das Gründungswerk des Daoismus: Laozis Daodejing. Ein Buch, das nicht wie ein Traktat Schluss um Schluss zur Konklusion fortschreitet, sondern uns lehrt, dass nicht alle Fragen und Probleme mit vermeintlich eindeutiger Logik abzuhandeln sind.
Im Daodejing finden wir aber auch utopische Visionen des Zusammenlebens, Umschreibungen der Eigenschaften weiser Herrschaft und poetische Bilder einer Natur im ständigen Wandel, in die man sich einfügen sollte. Das Buch ist also voller Spannungen, die es, das sei vorweggenommen gar nicht immer aufzulösen bestrebt ist, um nicht begrifflich scharfen aber illusionären Pseudolösungen anheimzufallen.

Together with Kai Marchal we look at the founding work of Daoism: Laozi's Daodejing. A book that does not proceed like a treatise conclusion by conclusion to the conclusion, but teaches us that not all questions and problems can be dealt with supposedly clear logic.
In the Daodejing, however, we also find utopian visions of living together, paraphrases of the characteristics of wise rule, and poetic images of a nature in constant change, in which one should fit in. The book is thus full of tensions, which, it should be noted, it does not always strive to resolve, so as not to fall prey to conceptually sharp but illusionary pseudo-solutions.

World literature, this term coined by Goethe, denotes something that must first be made by turning to the culturally foreign. Michael Hampe explains why the METIS platform has dedicated itself to this term in order to make wisdom literature accessible to the world. These literatures mirror each other in certain widespread experiences of suffering, joy, hope, sorrow, war, etc. As we engage with the world's wisdom literature, we come to know each other and ourselves better.

Weltliteratur, dieser von Goethe geprägte Begriff bezeichnet etwas, das man durch Hinwendung zum kulturell Fremden erst machen muss. Michael Hampe erklärt, warum die METIS-Plattform sich diesem Begriff verschrieben hat, um die die Weisheitsliteratur der Welt zugänglich zu machen. Diese Literaturen spiegeln einander in bestimmten weit verbreiteten Erfahrungen des Leids, der Freude, der Hoffnung, der Sorge, des Kriegs, etc. Wenn wir uns mit der Weltliteratur des Weisheit beschäftigen, lernen wir einander und uns selbst besser kennen.
