(Intermediate)
(The Text)Part 1: The Modern Americans
When Mr. Otis bought Canterville Chase, everyone told him he was doing a foolish thing. "The ghost is real," said Lord Canterville. But Mr. Otis laughed. "I come from a modern country where we have everything money can buy. If there were a ghost in Europe, we would have put it in a museum by now." So, the Otis family moved in. On the very first night, they found a terrible red bloodstain on the floor near the fireplace.
Part 2: The Stain Remover
"That is the blood of Lady Eleanore, murdered in 1575," said the old housekeeper solemnly. "The stain cannot be removed."
"That is all nonsense," cried young Washington Otis. "Pinkerton’s Champion Stain Remover will clean it in a second!" He knelt down and scrubbed the floor. In a moment, the bloodstain was gone. The next morning, the stain reappeared, and Washington cleaned it again. The ghost was starting to feel very annoyed.
Part 3: The Lubricant for Chains
At one o'clock in the morning, a strange noise woke Mr. Otis. It sounded like the clanking of heavy iron chains. He put on his slippers and opened his bedroom door. There stood the ghost, with eyes as red as coals and messy gray hair.
"My dear sir," said Mr. Otis, "your chains are making a terrible noise. I must insist that you oil them. I have brought you a bottle of Tammany Rising Sun Lubricant. It is very effective." He placed the bottle on a table and went back to bed. The ghost was shocked. Never in three hundred years had anyone treated him with such lack of respect!
Part 4: The Ghost’s Defeat
The ghost tried everything to scare them. He dressed as a "Headless Giant" and a "Bloodless Corpse," but the twins (the youngest Otis boys) played tricks on him instead. They threw pillows at him and set traps with strings. Finally, the ghost became depressed. He hid in his room and refused to come out. It was only when Virginia, the kind daughter, spoke to him with sympathy that the ghost finally found peace. He realized that love is stronger than death, and the "modern" world could not destroy a kind heart.

(The Text)Part 1: The Master Plan
Bill and Sam were two small-time criminals who needed $2,000 for a new scheme. They decided to kidnap the son of a prominent man named Ebenezer Dorset in a quiet town. They thought a wealthy father would pay any price to get his child back. They rented a buggy, grabbed the boy, and hid him in a cave in the nearby hills. "This is going to be the easiest money we’ve ever made," Sam said. But the boy was already busy throwing rocks at Bill’s head.
Part 2: Red Chief Takes Control
The boy, who called himself "Red Chief," loved the cave. He thought he was on a grand camping trip. He forced Bill to play the role of a captive "Old Hank the Trapper," while he pretended to be an Indian warrior. Red Chief was hyperactive and loud. He didn't want to go home. In fact, he spent the whole night shouting and kept the kidnappers awake. Bill was starting to look terrified. "Sam," Bill whispered, "do you think his father will pay us to keep him longer?"
Part 3: The Desperate Ransom Letter
By the second day, Bill was exhausted. Red Chief had tried to "scalp" him and had put a hot potato down his back. Sam decided it was time to send the ransom letter. They asked for $1,500 instead of $2,000, hoping for a quick deal. "Just get us the money and take the boy away," the letter implied. While Sam went to town to deliver the note, Bill was left alone with the boy. When Sam returned, he found Bill trembling behind a tree.
Part 4: The Final Reversal
The father’s reply arrived that evening. It was not what they expected. Mr. Dorset wrote: "I think your price is too high. But I have a better offer. If you bring the boy home and pay me $250, I will take him off your hands." Bill looked at Sam with tears in his eyes. "We have to do it," he said. They paid the father, handed over the screaming boy, and ran away as fast as they could. They didn't even look back at the $2,000 they had originally wanted.

(The Text)Part 1: The First Advice
It all started with a small sneeze. A lady friend told me, "I know exactly what you need. You must put your feet in very hot water until you are red." I did it. Then another friend said, "No, no! Cold water is the secret. You must jump into a cold bath immediately." I followed that too. By the end of the day, I didn't know if I was hot or cold, but the cold was still there, stronger than ever.
Part 2: The Hunger and the Feast
The next day, a man told me the old rule: "Feed a cold and starve a fever." So I ate enough food for three men. I felt like a balloon. But then an old lady stopped me on the street and said, "That’s wrong! You must starve a cold and feed a fever." So I stopped eating altogether. My stomach was confused, and I was so weak that I couldn't even sneeze properly.
Part 3: The Terrible Remedies
My room began to fill with strange bottles. One person suggested I drink a quart of warm salt water. Another told me to tie a long sock filled with fried onions around my neck. I looked like a mess and smelled like a kitchen. My back was covered with various plasters (膏药) that burned my skin. "The more it hurts, the better it works," they told me. I began to wonder if I would survive the "cure."
Part 4: The Recovery
Finally, I decided to ignore everyone. I threw the onions away, emptied the bottles, and just went to bed. After a few days of peace and quiet, I felt much better. I realized that the best cure for a cold is simply time. As for my friends, they were all disappointed because they each believed their own "secret remedy" had saved my life.

12:The Stolen White Elephant
作者: Mark Twain(美国)
(Intermediate)
(The Text)Part 1: The Impossible Theft
A magnificent white elephant, a gift for the Queen of England, was stolen in Jersey City. It was a giant animal, weighing thousands of pounds, yet it vanished without a trace. The owner, in a state of panic, went to the office of Inspector Blunt, the most famous detective in the country. Blunt looked very professional. He touched his forehead and said, "Do not worry. We will use scientific methods to find it. No criminal can escape my department."
Part 2: The Detective’s "Perfect" Plan
Inspector Blunt did not go out to look for the elephant. Instead, he sat in his office and organized a massive army of detectives. He sent telegrams to every city in America. He ordered his men to describe every detail of the elephant: its trunk, its ivory, and its appetite. "We must gather all the facts," he said. "The elephant cannot hide for long." Meanwhile, the costs of the investigation began to rise, and the newspapers praised Blunt for his "brilliant" leadership.
Part 3: False Alarms
Soon, reports started coming in from all over the country. One detective claimed he saw the elephant riding a train; another said he saw it eating a whole garden in a faraway village. Blunt followed every lead, even the most ridiculous ones. He spent thousands of dollars rewarding his men for these "valuable" tips. However, the elephant was nowhere to be found. The public was impressed by the busy activity of the police, even though there was no result.
Part 4: The Dead Truth
A few weeks later, a terrible smell began to fill the basement of the very building where Inspector Blunt had his office. The police finally looked downstairs and found the white elephant. It had been there the whole time, dead from hunger. It had never even left the building! Despite this total failure, Inspector Blunt was not ashamed. He declared the case a "success" because his department had followed all the correct procedures. The owner was heartbroken, but the police department celebrated their "hard work."

10:The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg作者: Mark Twain(美国)
(Intermediate)
Part 1: The Reputation of HadleyburgHadleyburg was the most honest and upright town in all the region. It was so proud of its reputation that it taught its children to avoid all temptation. One day, a mysterious stranger arrived. He had been offended by the town’s pride and wanted to test their honesty. He left a heavy sack at the house of a local banker, Mr. Richards, along with a note. The note said the sack contained gold worth $30,000.
Part 2: The Temptation Begins
The note explained that the gold belonged to a man who had once helped the stranger. To claim it, the person had to provide the exact words they had spoken to the stranger years ago. Soon, the news spread. Nineteen of the town’s most respected citizens received secret letters, each containing what seemed to be the "correct" words. Instead of being honest, each citizen secretly hoped the gold was theirs. They began to lie to themselves and their families.
Part 3: The Public Exposure
A big town meeting was held to open the sack and find the winner. The official read the claims one by one. To the horror of the audience, every single claim was nearly identical! One by one, the "honest" leaders of Hadleyburg were exposed as liars and cheats. The crowd laughed and shouted in mockery. The town’s reputation, built over generations, was destroyed in a single night.
Part 4: The Bitter Lesson
In the end, it was discovered that the sack did not contain gold at all—it was full of lead. The stranger had planned everything to show that their honesty was weak because it had never been tested. Mr. Richards, the last "honest" man, also died in guilt and shame. The town changed its motto from "Lead us not into temptation" to "Lead us into temptation." They realized that true virtue must be strong enough to survive a real challenge.
