📄 英语精读素材:The Verger (精简版)Part 1: The New Vicar
Albert Edward Foreman had been the verger (教堂司事) of St. Peter’s for sixteen years. He loved his job and kept the church in perfect order. However, a new vicar (牧师) arrived. The new vicar was a man of modern ideas and discovered a shocking fact: Albert could neither read nor write.
"I’m afraid a verger who cannot read or write is not suitable for a church like St. Peter’s," the vicar said. He gave Albert three months to learn, or he would have to resign. Albert, with a quiet dignity, refused to learn at his age and resigned immediately.
Part 2: The Accidental Business
Albert felt miserable as he walked away from the church. He wanted a cigarette to comfort himself, but he couldn't find a shop that sold them in the long street.
"What a strange thing," he thought. "There should be a shop here." An idea struck him. He decided to rent a shop and sell cigarettes and newspapers. The business was a huge success. Within ten years, he owned ten shops across London and became a very wealthy man.
Part 3: The Banker’s Astonishment
One day, Albert went to the bank to manage his fortune. The bank manager suggested he should invest his money. "I only need you to read the contract and sign your name," the manager said.
"I can't read," Albert replied, "and I can only sign my name."
The manager was struck with astonishment. "Good heavens, man! You have built a business empire without being able to read or write! Do you know what you would be today if you could read?"
Part 4: The Final Irony
Albert gave a small, quiet smile.
"I can tell you that, sir," he said. "I should be the verger of St. Peter’s, Neville Square."

这一篇我们回到“短篇小说之王”欧·亨利 (O. Henry) 的另一部巅峰之作——《警察与赞美诗》(The Cop and the Anthem)。
The Cop and the Anthem (精简版)Part 1: The Winter Plan
Winter was coming, and Soapy, a homeless man in New York, needed a place to stay. His goal was simple: to get arrested and spend three months in the warm prison on Blackwell's Island. It was his annual winter resort.
Soapy began his quest for arrest. First, he tried to eat a luxurious dinner at a high-end restaurant and then declare he had no money. But the head waiter saw his tattered shoes and threw him out before he could even sit down.
Part 2: Failed Attempts
Soapy didn't give up. He broke a shop window with a stone, but the policeman chased someone else. He went to another restaurant, ate a large meal, and told the waiter he couldn't pay. Instead of calling the police, two waiters simply threw him onto the hard pavement.
He then tried to "harass" a young woman, but she turned out to be quite friendly and willing to walk with him. Finally, he shouted and danced like a madman on the street, but the police ignored him, thinking he was just a noisy college student.
Part 3: The Anthem
Discouraged and cold, Soapy stopped in front of an old church. From inside came the sweet music of an anthem. The music moved Soapy deeply. He remembered his childhood, his mother, and his clean thoughts.
A sudden transformation took place in his soul. "I will get a job!" he thought. "I will become a man again! I will leave this mud and be someone!" He felt a new hope rising within him.
Part 4: The Irony
At that moment, a hand was laid on his arm. It was a policeman.
"What are you doing here?" asked the officer.
"Nothing," said Soapy.
"Then come with me," said the policeman.
The next morning, the judge in the police court sentenced Soapy to three months in prison on Blackwell's Island.

📄 英语精读素材:Love of Life (精简版)Part 1: Abandoned in the Wild
Two men were limping (一瘸一拐地走) through the frozen North of Canada. Their cartridges (子弹) were gone, and their stomachs were empty. Suddenly, one man, Bill, crossed a river and kept going, ignoring his partner’s cry: "Bill! I’ve sprained my ankle!" Bill never looked back. He disappeared into the vast, grey wilderness.
Part 2: The Hunger
The unnamed man was now alone. He had no food, no fire, and his ankle hurt terribly. He ate raw berries and even tried to catch small birds with his bare hands, but failed. Days passed. He became so weak that he could no longer walk; he began to crawl on his hands and knees. His life was fading, but his will to live remained as hard as a rock.
Part 3: The Patient Duel
A sick, dying wolf began to follow him. The man was dying, and the wolf was dying. It was a slow-motion race to see who would outlast the other. Every time the man collapsed, the wolf would crawl closer, waiting for the man to die.
One night, the man felt a dry tongue on his cheek. The wolf was trying to bite him. With his last bit of strength, the man rolled over and squeezed the wolf’s throat. It was a monstrous struggle. In the end, the man won—not with a weapon, but with his teeth and his spirit.
Part 4: The Rescue
Members of a scientific expedition on a ship saw a strange object on the shore. It didn't look like a human; it looked like a giant worm crawling toward the sea. It was the man. He had survived.
When he was finally safe on the ship, he couldn't stop crying over a piece of bread. He had faced the absolute darkness of death and came back, driven by the purest, simplest instinct: the love of life.
"Driven by the instinct to survive, the man crawled toward the shore."(在生存本能的驱动下,那个人爬向了岸边。)

📄 英语精读素材:The Bet (精简版)Part 1: The Argument
It was a dark, autumn night. An old banker was remembering a party he gave fifteen years ago. That night, the guests discussed the death penalty. The banker argued that the death penalty was more merciful than life imprisonment. However, a young lawyer disagreed: "To live anyhow is better than not at all."
The banker, excited and spoiled by wealth, shouted: "I bet you two million that you wouldn't stay in solitary confinement for even five years!"
"If you mean it seriously," replied the lawyer, "I will stay not five, but fifteen years!"
Part 2: The Terms
The bet was on! For fifteen years, the lawyer was to live in a small lodge in the banker’s garden. He could not see people, hear human voices, or receive letters. He was allowed to have musical instruments, books, and wine.
Part 3: The Transformation
In the first year, the lawyer played the piano and read light novels. In the fifth year, he asked for wine and stayed idle. In the sixth year, he began to study languages, philosophy, and history. He mastered six languages! Then he moved on to the Gospels and science.
During the last two years, the prisoner read an immense quantity of books quite indiscriminately He was like a man swimming in the sea among the wreckage of his ship, trying to save his life by clinging to one fragment after another.
Part 4: The Banker’s Despair
Fifteen years had passed. The banker was now poor and ruined. If he paid the two million, he would be bankrupt. He decided to kill the lawyer. He entered the lodge secretly and saw the lawyer—now a skeleton covered with skin, sitting motionless. On the table was a letter.
The letter said: "I despise your money and your world. Your books have given me wisdom, and I have found that everything in your life is empty and worthless. To show my contempt, I will leave here five minutes before the time is up, and so forfeit the two million."
The banker kissed the strange man’s head and went out, crying. He had never felt such contempt for himself as at that moment.
(Critical Thinking):

📄 英语精读素材:The Sniper (精简版)Part 1: The Night in Dublin
The long June twilight faded into night. Dublin lay wrapped in darkness. On a rooftop, a Republican sniper lay watching. Beside him lay his rifle and his binoculars. He was eating a sandwich hungrily. He had eaten nothing since morning.
He finished the sandwich and took a flask of whiskey from his pocket. He took a short drink. Then he paused to consider whether he should smoke. It was dangerous, but he decided to take the risk. He struck a match, lit a cigarette, and took a puff. Almost immediately, a bullet flattened itself against the parapet (女儿墙).
Part 2: The Duel
The sniper lay still for a long time. Then he peered over the edge. Another bullet whizzed past his head. There was an enemy sniper on the opposite roof.
Suddenly, an armored car came across the bridge. An old woman pointed toward the roof where the sniper lay. The sniper shot her and the man in the car. But as he did, a bullet from the opposite roof hit his arm. He felt no pain at first, only a sudden blow. Then he realized he was wounded. He dropped his rifle.
Part 3: The Trick
He had to kill the other sniper to survive. He took his cap and placed it over the muzzle (枪口) of his rifle. He pushed the rifle slowly upward until the cap was visible from the opposite roof. A shot rang out. The cap fell. The sniper let his rifle drop to the street.
The enemy sniper, thinking he had killed his opponent, stood up on the roof. The Republican sniper took out his revolver Taking a steady aim, he fired. The enemy fell forward and hit the ground below.
Part 4: The Identity
The sniper felt a sudden remorse. The lust (冲动) for battle died in him. He became curious about the man he had killed. Perhaps he had known him before the civil war?
When the sniper reached the street, he turned over the dead body and looked into his brother's face.
