#OldManAtTheBridge #Hemingway #WarAndPeace #IcebergTheory #ShanghaiEnglish #
挑选的是他的名篇 《桥边的老人》(Old Man at the Bridge)。
Old Man at the Bridge (精简版)Part 1: The Encounter
An old man with steel-rimmed spectacles and very dusty clothes sat by the side of the road. There was a pontoon (浮桥) bridge across the river and carts, trucks, and men, women and children were crossing it.
I was a soldier, and my job was to cross the bridge and find out how far the enemy had advanced. After doing that, I returned and found the old man still there. "Where do you come from?" I asked him.
"From San Carlos," he said, and smiled. That was his native town and so it gave him pleasure to mention it.
Part 2: The Concern for Animals
"I was taking care of animals," he explained.
"Oh," I said, not quite understanding.
"Yes," he said, "I stayed to take care of them. I was the last one to leave the town of San Carlos."
He did not look like a shepherd nor a herdsman. "What animals were they?" I asked.
"There were three cats, two goats, and eight pairs of pigeons," he said.
Part 3: The Tragedy of War
"And you had to leave them?" I asked.
"Yes. Because of the artillery (大炮). The captain told me to go because of the artillery."
"And what will they do now?" I asked.
"The cats will look after themselves," he said. "But the others? It is better not to think about the others."
Part 4: Resignation
I tried to urge him to move. "If you can walk, there are trucks up the road."
"I will wait a while," he said, "and then I will go."
He looked at me blankly and tiredly, then said, "I was only taking care of animals."
There was nothing to do about him. It was Easter Sunday and the Fascists were advancing toward the Ebro. It was a grey, overcast day, so their planes were not up. That and the fact that cats can look after themselves was all the good luck that old man would ever have.
"...the fact that cats can look after themselves was all the good luck that old man would ever have."
"It being a grey day, their planes were not up."
#TheLuncheon #Maugham #Irony #SocialEtiquette #ShanghaiEnglish #
📄 英语精读素材:The Luncheon (精简版)Part 1: The TrapI caught sight of her at the play. It was twenty years ago. At that time, I was living in a tiny apartment in Paris and earning barely enough money to keep body and soul together. She had read a book of mine and written to me about it.
"If you are in Paris," she wrote, "would you give me a little luncheon at Foyot’s?" Foyot’s was a restaurant where French senators (参议员) ate. It was so far beyond my budget that I had never even thought of going there. But I was young and I was too shy to say "no" to a woman. I had eighty francs to last me the rest of the month. I thought a modest luncheon would not cost more than fifteen.
Part 2: "I Never Eat Anything"We met at Foyot’s. She was not as young as I expected. She was a woman of forty, talkative, and she seemed to have more teeth than were necessary for any practical purpose.
When the menu arrived, I was startled by the prices. But she said, "I never eat anything for luncheon. Just a little fish, perhaps."She ordered salmon. Then she ordered caviar (鱼子酱). While I was waiting for my cheap mutton chop, she said, "I think you are unwise to eat meat. Why don't you follow my example and just eat one thing?"
Part 3: The Mounting BillThen came the giant asparagus (芦笋). I watched her swallow them in large, mouth-watering mouthfuls. My heart sank. I wondered how much money I would have left for the rest of the month."I'll have a peach," she said. Peaches were out of season then and cost a fortune. I had a cup of coffee."You know," she said, as she ate the peach, "I don't believe in overloading the stomach."
When the bill came, I had only three francs left for the tip. I could see she thought I was mean. But when I walked out of the restaurant, I had a whole month before me and not a penny in my pocket.
Part 4: The RetributionTwenty years later, I saw her again at the theater. I didn't recognize her at first. But then I remembered that luncheon. Today, she weighs twenty-one stone (133 kg).
I am not a revengeful man, but when the immortal gods take a hand in the matter, it is natural to feel a sense of satisfaction.
"She seemed to have more teeth than were necessary..."

The 1,000,000 Bank-NotePart 1: The Unusual Bet
Two wealthy English brothers had a strange argument. One believed that a man could survive for a month in London with a million-pound bank note, even if he couldn't spend it. The other disagreed. To test this, they chose Henry Adams, a penniless American sailor who was lost in London. They handed him an envelope and told him not to open it until he was alone.
Part 2: The Magic Paper
Henry, feeling hungry, went into a cheap restaurant. When he finished his meal, he opened the envelope and found a bank note for a million pounds! He was shocked. The restaurant owner, seeing the note, immediately changed his attitude. "Oh, sir," he cried, bowing low, "please don't worry about the small change. You can pay whenever you like!"
Part 3: The Tailor's Change
Next, Henry went to a tailor's shop. The clerk was very rude at first, showing him the cheapest and ugliest suit. "I suppose you can't afford our best clothes," the clerk said scornfully.
However, when Henry produced the giant note, the clerk nearly fainted. The shop owner rushed out, apologized, and offered to make Henry the finest suits on credit. Soon, Henry was famous. Everyone thought he was an eccentric millionaire.
Part 4: The Power of Reputation
Without spending a single penny of that million-pound note, Henry lived in the best hotels and ate the finest food. His reputation for wealth gave him everything he needed. In the end, he not only won the bet for the brothers but also won the heart of a beautiful girl named Portia.
He proved that in the eyes of the world, the appearance of wealth is sometimes more powerful than wealth itself.

(Satire)
The richer people thought Henry was, the more polite they became.(人们认为亨利越有钱,他们就变得越礼貌。)
#ARetrieved Reformation #OHenry #CharacterChange #Sacrifice #ShanghaiEnglishReading #
📄 英语精读素材:A Retrieved Reformation (精简版)Part 1: The Master Safecracker
Jimmy Valentine was a master safecracker (开保险柜强盗) who had just been released from prison. He immediately went back to his old habits, breaking into three bank safes with his high-quality tools. A famous detective, Ben Price, started following him, determined to put him back behind bars.
Part 2: A Change of Heart
One day, Jimmy arrived in a small town called Elmore. In front of the bank, he saw Annabel Adams, the banker’s beautiful daughter. For Jimmy, it was love at first sight.
He decided to change his life. He changed his name to Ralph Spencer and opened a shoe store. He became a successful businessman and a respected member of the community. A year later, he was engaged to Annabel. He even wrote a letter to an old friend, offering to give away his specialized tools because he "wouldn't touch another man's money again."
Part 3: The Crisis
One morning, Jimmy (now Ralph) went to the bank with Annabel’s family. The banker was showing off a new, airtight (不透气的) safe. Suddenly, a little girl named Agatha was accidentally locked inside the safe by her sister.
The safe had no clock-spring yet, and the door was locked. Everyone panicked. Agatha’s mother screamed in terror. "She will die! There isn't enough air!"
Part 4: The Sacrifice
Jimmy looked at Annabel. She looked at him with trusting eyes. "Can't you do something, Ralph?"
Jimmy knew that if he opened the safe, everyone—including the detective Ben Price, who was watching from a distance—would know his true identity. He would lose his business, his reputation, and his bride.
He took out his tools. In ten minutes, he opened the safe. Agatha was saved.
Jimmy put on his coat and walked toward the front door. He saw Ben Price standing there. "Hello, Ben," said Jimmy. "I guess you've got me at last."
But Ben Price acted strangely. "You've mistaken me, Mr. Spencer," he said. "I don't believe I know you." And the detective turned and walked away down the street.
"He saw a gloomy-looking man, heavily built and roughly dressed."
"Agatha was locked inside a newly-installed safe."#
#ThankYouMam #LangstonHughes #
📄 英语精读素材:Thank You, M'am (精简版)Part 1: The Attempt
She was a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it but hammer and nails. It was about eleven o’clock at night. A boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse. The strap broke with the single tug (猛拉) the boy gave it. But the boy fell on his back on the sidewalk.
The large woman simply turned around and kicked him. Then she reached down, picked the boy up by his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled.
Part 2: The Unexpected Invitation
"Pick up my pocketbook, boy, and give it here," she said. She didn't let him go.
"I'm very sorry, lady, I'm sorry," whispered the boy.
"Your face is dirty. Ain't you got nobody home to tell you to wash your face?"
"No’m," said the boy.
"Then it will get washed this evening," said the large woman starting up the street, dragging the frightened boy behind her.
Part 3: The Confession
In her room, she finally let him go. The boy looked at the door, then at the woman, then at the door—and went to the sink.
"Why did you want to do it?" she asked.
"I wanted a pair of blue suede (绒面革) shoes," said the boy.
The woman paused. "I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son. Everybody has something in common."
Part 4: The Trust
She didn't watch him to see if he was going to run, nor did she watch her purse. She heated some food and they ate together. When they were finished, she reached into her purse and gave the boy ten dollars.
"Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes. And next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto (抓住) my pocketbook nor nobody else’s—because shoes come by devilish (邪恶的) ways will burn your feet."
She led him to the front door. The boy wanted to say something other than "Thank you, m’am" to Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, but his lips moved and he couldn't even say that as he turned at the foot of the barren stoop (门廊) and looked up at the large woman in the door.

The Model MillionairePart 1: The Poor Young Man
Hughie Erskine was a very good-looking young man, but he was not clever and had no money. He was in love with a girl named Laura Merton. Her father, a retired Colonel, liked Hughie but said: "My boy, you can marry my daughter only when you have ten thousand pounds of your own." Hughie was heartbroken because he had no way to get such a large sum.
Part 2: The Beggar in the Studio
One day, Hughie visited his friend Alan Trevor, who was a famous painter. Trevor was finishing a portrait of a beggar. The beggar stood on a platform in the corner of the studio. He looked miserable, with a wrinkled face, a torn brown coat, and a hat held out for money.
"What an amazing model!" whispered Hughie.
"How much does a model get for sitting?"
"A shilling (先令) an hour," replied Trevor.
"And how much do you get for the painting, Alan?"
"Oh, for this, I get two thousand guineas!"
Hughie felt sorry for the beggar. He searched his pockets and found the only sovereign (金币) he had. He walked across the room and slipped it into the beggar’s hand. The old man smiled and said, "Thank you, sir."
Part 3: The Identity
That night, Hughie met Trevor again. Trevor laughed and told him: "That old beggar was very interested in you. He asked me all about you—who you were, where you lived, and your financial situation."
"Poor old man," said Hughie. "I wish I could do more for him."
"You foolish boy!" shouted Trevor. "That 'beggar' was not a beggar. He is Baron Hausberg, one of the richest men in Europe. He asked me to paint him as a beggar just for fun!"
Hughie was embarrassed. He thought he had insulted a millionaire by giving him a tiny coin.
Part 4: The Reward
The next morning, a messenger arrived from Baron Hausberg. He handed Hughie a sealed envelope. On the outside was written: "A wedding present to Hughie Erskine and Laura Merton, from an old beggar." Inside was a check for ten thousand pounds.
"Philanthropic millionaires," said Trevor, "are rare enough; but model millionaires are even rarer!"
Model millionaires are even rarer."
"You can marry my daughter only when you have ten thousand pounds."
