(The Cracked Pot)

    The Cracked Pot

An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots. Each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water.

At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For two years, this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water.

Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own flaw, and miserable that it could only do half of what it was supposed to do.

After two years of what it perceived as a bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house."

The old woman smiled. "Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you've watered them."

"For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."

    1. 对比用法: “One of the pots had a crack in it, while the other pot was perfect...”
    2. 时间用法: “...while we walk back, you've watered them.”
(Action Plan)
    1. 摘抄金句: > "Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."(如果没有你现在的样子,就不会有这些美丽来装点房间了。)
What is the moral of the story? 提示词: Everyone has a purpose (目标); Turn weaknesses into strengths (转劣势为优势).

Nick Bostrom, Are You Living in a Computer Simulation? (2003)
(Principle of Mediocrity)

  • 番外篇03|上海高一英语精读:美国作家Frank的名作—The Lady, or the Tiger?

    这一篇我为你挑选了美国作家弗兰克·斯托克顿(Frank Stockton)的传世名作——《美女还是老虎?》(The Lady, or the Tiger?)。

The Lady, or the Tiger?

Part 1: The King’s JusticeIn the very olden time, there lived a semi-barbaric king. He was a man of terrible authority. When he had a big decision to make, he used a unique system of justice—the Arena.

In this arena, a person accused of a crime had to choose between two doors. Behind one door was a hungry tiger, which would immediately tear the person to pieces. Behind the other door was a beautiful lady. If the man opened that door, he was innocent and had to marry the lady immediately. The king called this "perfect justice," because the criminal chose his own fate.

Part 2: The Forbidden LoveThe king had a daughter, a princess as passionate and strong as her father. She fell in love with a handsome young man of low rank. When the king discovered their love, he was furious. He immediately ordered the young man to be thrown into the arena.

The princess used her power and gold to learn the secret of the doors. She knew behind which door stood the tiger, and behind which stood the lady. But there was a problem: she hated the lady behind the door. She was jealous of her beauty and suspected that the young man already liked her.

Part 3: The ChoiceOn the day of the trial, the young man looked up at the princess. He knew she had the secret. His eyes asked, "Which one?"

The princess raised her right hand and made a slight, quick movement toward the right. Without a moment of hesitation, the young man walked to the right-hand door and opened it.

Now, the question remains: Which came out of the opened door—the lady, or the tiger?

    4. Jealous (adj.): 嫉妒的。 (名词:jealousy)。
    5. Hesitation (n.): 犹豫。 (动词:hesitate)。
    6. Accuse (v.): 指控。 (常用搭配:accuse sb. of sth.)。
    7. Passionate (adj.):

If you were the princess, which door would you choose for him? Why?

    The Open Window (精简版)

Part 1: The Nervous GuestMr. Framton Nuttel was a nervous man. He had come to the countryside for a "nerve cure." He didn't know anyone there, so his sister gave him letters of introduction to some neighbors. One of them was Mrs. Sappleton.

While waiting for Mrs. Sappleton, her fifteen-year-old niece, Vera, kept him company. Vera was a very self-possessed young lady. "Do you know many people around here?" she asked. "Hardly any," said Framton.

Part 2: The Tragedy"Then you don't know about my aunt's great tragedy?" asked the niece. "It happened exactly three years ago today."

Vera pointed to a large French window that was open, even though it was a cold October afternoon. "My aunt keeps that window wide open every evening," Vera whispered. "Three years ago, her husband and her two brothers went out through that window for a day's hunting. They never came back. They were swallowed by a treacherous piece of bog (沼泽). Their bodies were never found. My poor aunt thinks they will come back someday, through that window, with the little brown dog that was lost with them."

Framton felt a shudder of fear. Just then, Mrs. Sappleton entered the room. "I hope you don't mind the open window," she said cheerfully. "My husband and brothers will be home soon from hunting."

Part 3: The "Ghosts" ReturnFramton watched the window with horror. Suddenly, in the deepening twilight, three figures walked across the lawn toward the window. They all carried guns, and a tired brown dog followed them.

Framton didn't wait. He grabbed his stick and hat, and ran out of the house like a madman, nearly colliding with a cyclist on the road.

Part 4: The Real Story"Here we are, my dear," said the husband, coming through the window. "Who was that man who rushed out as we arrived?"

"A most extraordinary man, a Mr. Nuttel," said Mrs. Sappleton. "He could only talk about his illnesses, and then dashed off without a word of apology when you arrived. One would think he had seen a ghost."

"I expect it was the dog," said the niece calmly. "He told me he had a horror of dogs. He was once hunted into a graveyard in India by a pack of wild dogs and had to spend the night in a newly dug grave."

Romance at short notice was her speciality.

    1. Self-possessed (adj.):
    3. Treacherous (adj.):
    5. Extraordinary (adj.):
      Romance at short notice:

Romance at short notice was her speciality."
