本期播客深度拆解行为金融学大师詹姆斯·蒙蒂尔的实战指南《行为投资学手册》(The Little Book of Behavioral Investing: How not to be your own worst enemy)。

    #TheEcho #LifeLessons #MirrorEffect #SimpleEnglish #PositiveVibes #ShanghaiEnglishReading #

Part 1: The MisunderstandingA little boy got angry with his mother and shouted, "I hate you! I hate you!" Then, fearing punishment, he ran out of the house to a hillside. He shouted into the valley, "I hate you! I hate you!"

Back came the echo: "I hate you! I hate you!"

The boy was scared. He had never heard an echo before. He thought there was a mean boy hiding in the mountains who wanted to fight him. He shouted back, "Who are you?"The voice answered, "Who are you?"

Part 2: The LessonThe boy ran back to his mother and said, "Mom, there is a bad boy in the woods. He is shouting at me!"

His mother understood what was happening. She smiled and said, "Go back to the hillside, my son, and shout: 'I love you! I love you!'"

The boy went back and tried it. He shouted, "I love you! I love you!"The voice replied clearly, "I love you! I love you!"

Part 3: The TruthThe boy was surprised and happy. His mother explained, "That is what people call an 'Echo,' but truly, that is how life is. It gives you back what you say or do. If you want love, give love. If you want kindness, be kind to others."

Life is like a mirror; it reflects what you show it.

(Vocabulary)

"What you say or do..." (你所说或所做的……)"What is happening..."
    • 用法: 这里的 what 相当于 the thing(s) that。
What you learn today will help you tomorrow.

    #HeartsAndHands #OHenry #KindnessOfStrangers #Dignity #TheTwist #ShanghaiEnglish #HeartsAndHands #

Part 1: The Unexpected MeetingOn a train to Denver, a beautiful young woman named Miss Fairchild was sitting in a luxurious seat. At a stop, two men entered and sat in the only remaining seat facing her.

One was a handsome man with a bold, frank face; the other was a gloomy-looking man, heavily built and roughly dressed. As they sat down, Miss Fairchild realized the handsome man was an old friend, Mr. Easton. She reached out her hand and spoke to him with a lovely smile.

Part 2: The HandcuffsBut then, her eyes dropped to their hands. The two men were handcuffed together. The smile faded from her face.

The rough-looking man noticed her expression. He spoke up quickly: "Excuse me, Miss, but I see you know the marshal (法警) here. He is taking me to Leavenworth prison. I’m getting seven years for counterfeiting

"Oh," said Miss Fairchild, with a deep breath, her color returning. "So that is what you are doing out here? A marshal!"

Part 3: The ConversationMr. Easton smiled. "I had to do something," he said. "Money has a way of flying away, and being a marshal is a steady job." They talked for a while. Miss Fairchild was clearly impressed by Easton’s new, heroic identity.

The rough man then stood up. "I need a smoke, Mr. Marshal," he said roughly. "Take me to the smoker car, will you?"

Easton stood up. "I can’t deny a prisoner a smoke," he said lightly. They said goodbye to Miss Fairchild and walked away.

Part 4: The Hidden TruthTwo other passengers had been listening to the conversation. One said, "That marshal is a good fellow. Some of these Western fellows are quite generous."

"He’s pretty young to be a marshal, isn’t he?" asked the other.

"Young!" exclaimed the first speaker. "Wait—didn't you notice? Did you ever know a marshal to handcuff a prisoner to his own right hand?"

(Vocabulary)

"The two men entered and sat in the only remaining seat facing her."
The seat which was facing her

    #TheLastLeaf #OHenry #SacrificeInArt #WillToLive #Masterpiece #ThePowerOfHope #

Part 1: The Falling LeavesIn a small district of New York, two young artists, Sue and Johnsy, shared a studio. In November, a cold stranger called Pneumonia (肺炎) visited the city. Johnsy fell ill and lay in her bed, looking out of the window at the wall of the next house.

"Twelve," she whispered, "then eleven, and ten..." She was counting the leaves on an old ivy vine. "When the last one falls, I must go, too," she said with despair. Her doctor told Sue that Johnsy's chance of recovery depended on her will to live.

Part 2: Old BehrmanDownstairs lived an old painter named Behrman. He was a failure in art; for forty years he had always been about to paint a masterpiece, but had never begun it. When Sue told him about Johnsy’s fancy, the old man was angry. "Is there such foolishness?" he cried. "To die because leaves drop off a vine?"

Part 3: The MiracleThat night, there was a terrible storm. The wind screamed and the rain beat against the windows. Johnsy was sure that the last leaf would be gone by morning.

But the next morning, the last leaf was still there. It hung bravely against the wall. Another day passed, and the leaf did not fall. Johnsy watched it for a long time. "I've been a bad girl, Sue," she said. "Something has made that last leaf stay there to show me how wicked I was to want to die." She began to eat and soon became stronger.

Part 4: The MasterpieceA few days later, Sue came to Johnsy's bed. "Mr. Behrman died of pneumonia today in the hospital," she whispered. "The janitor found him on the floor of his room. His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold. They found a lantern, some green and yellow paint, and some brushes."

"Look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn't you wonder why it never fluttered or moved when the wind blew? Oh, darling, it is Behrman’s masterpiece—he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell."

(Vocabulary)

✍️ 语法点拨:be about to do (正要做某事)

"...he had always been about to paint a masterpiece, but had never begun it."
    • 用法: be about to do sth.
I was about to leave when the phone rang.

    • 四大行为风险(The Four Behavioral Risks): 1.

    #LoveAndSacrifice #OHenry #TheGiftOfTheMagi #Irony #ShanghaiHighSchoolEnglish #LiteraryAnalysis #TrueWealth #

    这一篇我为你挑选了欧·亨利 (O. Henry) 的代表作——《麦琪的礼物》(The Gift of the Magi)。

The Gift of the Magi

Part 1: The StruggleOne dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Tomorrow was Christmas, and Della had no money to buy her husband, Jim, a worthy gift. She sat on the shabby little sofa and cried.

There were two possessions in which Jim and Della took great pride. One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair. It was long, brown, and fell like a cascade of brown waters.

Part 2: The SacrificeSuddenly, Della stood up and went to the mirror. She put on her old brown jacket and hat. She ran to a shop called Mme. Sofronie. Hair Goods."Will you buy my hair?" asked Della."I buy hair," said Madame. "Take your hat off and let’s see."Twenty dollars was the price. For the next two hours, Della searched the stores for Jim’s present. She found it at last: a platinum watch chain, simple but elegant. It was worthy of The Watch. As soon as she saw it, she knew it must be for Jim. She paid twenty-one dollars for it.

Part 3: The IronyWhen Jim arrived home, he stopped as if he had seen a ghost. His eyes were fixed upon Della, who had cut her hair short to sell it."Jim, darling," she cried, "don't look at me that way. I sold it to buy you a Christmas gift!"Jim slowly took a package from his coat pocket and threw it upon the table. Della tore at the string. Inside were The Combs—the set of beautiful ornaments she had long worshipped in a shop window. They were expensive, and now her hair was gone.

Then Della held out her gift for him—the beautiful new watch chain. "Give me your watch, Jim. I want to see how it looks on it."Instead of obeying, Jim sat down and smiled. "Della," said he, "let’s put our Christmas gifts away. They are too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs."

The Magi were wise men who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as these two are the wisest.

(Symmetry):

If Della had not sold her hair, she would not have been able to buy the platinum chain.(如果德拉没有卖掉头发,她就无法买到那条白金表链。)If Jim had not sold his watch, he could not have bought the expensive combs.(如果吉姆没有卖掉金表,他就买不起那套昂贵的发梳。) (Classic Challenge)
    1. 词汇积累: 记住 worth 的三个用法:be worth sth., be worthy of sth. (如文中 worthy of the watch), It is worthwhile to do sth.。
To buy each other Christmas gifts, a poor couple sold their most prized possessions, only to find...
(The Context)
    • The Magi: 读作 /ˈmeɪdʒaɪ/,中文译作“麦琪”或“东方三博士”。
    • Babe in the manger:
(The Deeper Meaning)

故事最后说 “Of all who give and receive gifts, such as these two are the wisest.”(在所有赠送和收受礼物的人当中,像他们两个这样的人才是最智慧的。)

    The Deaf Frog

A group of frogs was traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit. All the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep it was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead.

The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they would never make it.

Finally, one of the frogs took heed to (听从) what the others were saying and gave up. He fell down and died.

However, the other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally managed to get out.

When he got out, the other frogs asked, "Did you not hear us?"

The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time!

    1. “as good as dead”:
    2. “jumped even harder”:even
    3. “the entire time”:等于 all the time,但在写作中用 entire 显得更有分量。
(Daily Boost)
Despite the other frogs' negative comments, he kept jumping.

    The Starfish Story

One day, an old man was walking along the shore after a terrible storm. The beach was covered with thousands of starfish that had been washed up by the waves. Under the hot sun, these starfish were sure to die if they didn't get back into the water.

In the distance, the old man noticed a young man. The boy was leaning down, picking something up, and gently throwing it into the ocean. As the old man approached, he saw that the boy was picking up starfish one by one.

The old man laughed and said, "Son, what are you doing? There are miles of beach and thousands of starfish. You can’t possibly save them all. It doesn’t really matter, does it?"

The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the sea. He watched it land in the water and said, "It made a difference to that one."

The old man stood silent for a moment. Then he too bent down and began to help the boy.

Every small effort counts. We may not be able to change the whole world, but we can change the world for someone.

"The boy was leaning down, picking something up, and gently throwing it into the ocean."

(Today's Mission)
    1. 翻译练习: 试着把文中最出名的一句 "It made a difference to that one."
As the exam approached, I realized that memorizing words made an immense difference to my grades.
