    #HowIEditedAnAgriculturalPaper #MarkTwain #Humor #Journalism #Satire #IntermediateEnglish #

09:How I Edited an Agricultural Paper

    作者: Mark Twain(美国)

(Intermediate)

(Introduction)

    📝 The Text

    Part 1: A New Job

I once took a job as an editor of an agricultural newspaper. I knew nothing about farming, but I needed the money. I thought to myself, "How hard can it be? Writing is just putting words together." On my first day, the regular editor went on vacation and left me in charge. I sat at the desk, feeling like a professional, and began to write advice for the farmers.

    Part 2: Creative Farming

I wrote with great energy. I told my readers that turnips should not be pulled up, but that someone should climb the tree and shake them down. I also wrote that the way to keep cows quiet at night is to sing songs to them. My favorite piece of advice was about pumpkins: I told people that pumpkins were a variety of berry and should be used to make soup for birds. I felt very satisfied with my creative ideas.

    Part 3: The Angry Readers

The next morning, the office was surrounded by angry farmers. One man came in shaking the newspaper in my face. "Did you write this?" he shouted. "You told people that the way to catch a bird is to salt its tail! And you said that a donkey is a type of large rabbit!" I remained calm and told him that my writing was "original" and "bold." I believed that a good editor should have a broad imagination, even if he doesn't know the facts.

    Part 4: The Editor's Return

When the real editor returned, he was horrified. He read my articles and almost fainted. "You have ruined the reputation of this paper!" he cried. "People are laughing at us!" I resigned immediately. As I left, I told him that I was too advanced for his simple newspaper. I realized that in the world of journalism, sometimes it is better to be funny than to be right, although the farmers might disagree.

(Key Points & Insights)
    2. The Goal of Journalism (Attention)?
(Grammar Focus)

    • Example: “The editor went on vacation and left me in charge.”
类似结构:leave the window open。

    • Example: “A good editor should have imagination, even if he doesn't know the facts.”

    3. "Better to be... than to be..."

    • Example: “It is better to be funny than to be right.”

(Deep Insights)

    #TheCelebratedJumpingFrog #MarkTwain #AmericanHumor #TallTale #ClassicLiterature #IntermediateEnglish #

08:The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County

    作者: Mark Twain(美国)

(Intermediate)

(Introduction)

    Part 1: The Obsessive Bettor

I once visited an old man named Simon Wheeler to ask about a friend. Instead, Wheeler told me a long story about Jim Smiley. Jim Smiley was the most curious man; he would bet on anything. If there was a horse race, he bet on it. If two birds sat on a fence, he would bet which one would fly away first. He was lucky, and he almost always won. He had a collection of animals that he trained specifically for his bets.

Part 2: The Education of a Frog

Smiley’s most famous animal was a frog named Dan'l Webster. He spent three months "educating" the frog in his backyard. He taught it how to jump higher than any other frog in the country. He would shout, "Flies, Dan'l, flies!" and the frog would jump up and catch a fly from a great distance. Smiley was very proud of Dan'l. He kept the frog in a little box and was always looking for someone to bet against him.

    Part 3: The Challenge

One day, a stranger came to town. He saw Smiley’s box and asked what was inside. "It’s a frog," Smiley said proudly. "I will bet forty dollars that he can jump further than any frog in Calaveras County."

The stranger looked at the frog for a long time and said, "I don’t see anything special about this frog. If I had a frog, I would bet against you." Smiley was excited. He gave his box to the stranger and ran to the swamp to find another frog for the stranger to use.

    Part 4: The Heavy Secret

While Smiley was away, the stranger took Dan'l Webster out of the box. He opened the frog’s mouth and filled it with five pounds of heavy lead shot (铅弹). Then he put the frog back. When Smiley returned with a new frog, the competition began. "One, two, three, jump!" they cried. The new frog jumped away, but Dan'l Webster didn't move. He stayed on the ground, looking as heavy as a stone. The stranger took the money and left quickly. When Smiley later discovered the lead shot inside Dan'l, the stranger was already gone.

(Key Points & Insights)
    1. The Tall Tale Tradition
(Grammar Focus)

    • Example: “He would bet on anything.”

    • Example: “The most curious man,” “jump higher than any other frog.”
    • 解析: “Higher than any other...”

    • Example: “If I had a frog, I would bet against you.”

    #EnglishReading #IntermediateEnglish #CET4 #VocabularyBuilding #ClassicLiterature #

04:Running for Governor

    作者: Mark Twain(美国)

(Intermediate)

(Introduction)

    Part 1: The Innocent Candidate

A few months ago, I was chosen as a candidate for the Governor. I believed I had a good chance to win because my record was clean, unlike my opponents, Mr. Blotz and Mr. Holcomb, who were known to be dishonest. I thought to myself, "At last, an honest man will lead this state." I felt proud and waited for the election to begin.

    Part 2: The First Accusation

The very next morning, a newspaper published a letter. It was titled "A Question for the Candidate." It asked if I remembered the time I stole a poor widow's candy in a small village twenty years ago. I was shocked! I had never been to that village, and I certainly had never stolen candy. I wrote a reply to deny it, but the newspaper ignored my explanation and called me a "Heartless Thief."

    Part 3: The Lies Multiply

Soon, more accusations appeared. Another newspaper accused me of burning down a hospital for orphans. Then, a third paper claimed that I had cheated my dead uncle out of his money. People on the street started looking at me with hatred. Children threw stones at me. No matter how much I tried to tell the truth, the lies grew faster. My reputation was being destroyed by "the power of the press."

    Part 4: The Final Blow

The final blow came at a big public meeting. Nine children of different colors were sent onto the stage to hug my knees and call me "Father!" I had never seen these children before, but the crowd shouted in anger. I realized that the truth no longer mattered in a political race. I took my name off the list of candidates and wrote a letter: "I am no longer a candidate. I am now known as a thief, a murderer, and a fraud."

(Key Points & Insights)
    1. The Power of Rumors
    3. The Loss of Identity
(Grammar Focus)

    1. "Unlike"

    • Example: “Unlike his opponents, he believed honesty was the most important thing.”

    2. "No matter how" 引导的让步状语从句

    • Example: “No matter how much I tried to tell the truth, the lies grew faster.”

    • Example: “He cheated his uncle out of his money.”
另外,它也常表示动机,如 do something out of curiosity (出于好奇)。

The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law; they were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else.

This equality was enforced by the United States Handicapper General. People with high intelligence had to wear "mental handicap" radios in their ears that sent out sharp noises every twenty seconds to keep them from taking unfair advantage of their brains. The strong had to wear canvas bags of birdshot (铅弹) to weigh them down. The beautiful had to wear hideous masks.

    Part 2: The Genius Rebel

George and Hazel Bergeron were watching ballerinas on TV. Hazel, who had perfectly average intelligence, was crying but couldn't remember why. George, who was very smart, was being tormented by the loud noises in his ear radio.

Suddenly, the TV program was interrupted. A news bulletin announced that their son, fourteen-year-old Harrison Bergeron, had escaped from jail. Harrison was a genius and an athlete. He was seven feet tall and had been forced to carry three hundred pounds of scrap metal as a "handicap."

Part 3: The Emperor and the Empress

Harrison crashed into the TV studio. He tore off his heavy harnesses and iron weights like they were tissue paper. He declared himself "The Emperor" and chose a beautiful ballerina to be his "Empress."

He ordered the musicians to play, and for a few minutes, they danced. They leaped so high that they seemed to defy the laws of gravity and kiss the ceiling. It was a moment of pure, unhandicapped beauty and human potential.

Part 4: The Sound of Silence

Suddenly, Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicapper General, entered the studio with a double-barreled shotgun. She fired twice. Harrison and the Empress were dead before they hit the floor.

Back at home, George had gone to the kitchen for a beer. When he returned, he saw Hazel crying.

    "What's wrong?" he asked.

"I don't know," she sobbed. "Something real sad on TV."

    "Forget sad things," said George.

    "I always do," said Hazel.

(The Paradox of Equality)

"Even though Harrison was stronger than anyone else, he was forced to be the weakest."(尽管哈里森比任何人都强,他却被迫成为最弱的一个。)
No matter + what/who/how 的用法:
No matter how smart you were, you had to wear a radio.
(While it is true that... we should not forget...)

    #TheNightingaleAndTheRose #OscarWilde #Aestheticism #Idealism #ShanghaiEnglish #

    今天我们请出奥斯卡·王尔德(Oscar Wilde)最唯美、也最令人心碎的童话名篇——《夜莺与玫瑰》(The Nightingale and the Rose)。

The Nightingale and the Rose (精简版)

    Part 1: The Student’s Sorrow

"She said that she would dance with me if I brought her red roses," cried the young Student, "but in all my garden there is no red rose." His eyes filled with tears.

From her nest in the holm-oak tree, the Nightingale heard him. "Here at last is a true lover," she said. "Night after night have I sung of him, though I knew him not." The Student lamented that his philosophy was useless because it could not bring him a red rose to win his love's heart.

Part 2: The Quest for the Rose

The Nightingale flew to various rose-trees. She found white roses and yellow roses, but the frost had nipped the buds of the red rose-tree. "Is there no way to get one?" cried the Nightingale.

"There is a way," answered the Tree, "but it is so terrible that I dare not tell it to you. You must build it out of music by moonlight, and stain it with your own heart's-blood. You must sing to me with your breast against a thorn all night long."

    Part 3: The Sacrifice

"Death is a great price to pay for a red rose," cried the Nightingale, "yet Love is better than Life." So, when the moon shone, the Nightingale flew to the Rose-tree and set her breast against the thorn. All night long she sang, and the thorn went deeper and deeper, and her life-blood ebbed away.

At dawn, a marvelous red rose blossomed. But the Nightingale lay dead in the long grass, with the thorn in her heart.

    Part 4: The Cold Reality

The Student found the rose and was delighted. He ran to the Professor’s daughter. "Here is the reddest rose in all the world!" he said.

But the girl frowned. "I am afraid it will not go with my dress," she answered; "and, besides, the Chamberlain’s nephew has sent me some real jewels, and everybody knows that jewels cost far more than flowers."

"What a silly thing Love is," said the Student as he walked away. "It is not half as useful as Logic. I shall go back to Philosophy and study Metaphysics."

(Vocabulary)

"Jewels cost far more than flowers." Love is not half as useful as Logic."
    • 上海高中实战: 掌握 “not half as... as...”
The theoretical knowledge is not half as important as practical experience.
