I’m delighted to bring you a chat with Shay Raper this week. He’s a comedian from Newcastle that I have seen a few times, often doing slots on the same night.
In this chat, we cover how we got started, the furthest he’s currently prepared to travel for a gig, and what he’s up to in Edinburgh this summer.
Before Shay, there’s a bit of news from me about some recent dates.

I’m off on my summer holidays in a couple of days, so the podcast is taking a short break. However, look out for my newsletter, and if you don’t already, subscribe at mickkarma.substack.com.
George Phillips joins me on this edition of Mic Time, and tells us all about getting started in standup.
Incredibly, George has been gigging since summer 2023, mostly around West and South Yorkshire, and clocked up an incredible number of appearances. Comparatively speaking, he’s a machine, so it’s great to have him on and learn a bit about his experiences behind the mic.
George tells us about a few of his adventures in stand up, including what happened when he dealt with a rugby playing heckler…

When I started the comedy course run by Phil Smith and Fran Garrity, I met lots of great people. But someone who seemed to be way ahead of the rest of us very early on (I think we managed to level up later) was Amy Albright.
Now, we’ve done gigs together, I’ve been on the Too Grand open mic, and we’ve chatted socially, but I’ve not managed to get her onto the podcast so far.
Until now!
Amy chats about a few things, from that course that kicked it all off to a pub landlord who openly stated "I don't like women comedians."
Mate, it’s 2024. Also, that would have been archaic in 1994.

I’m very pleased to welcome Kenny Watt to the latest Mic Time podcast. Kenny started out at the same time as me, and we’ve done the same gigs together on a few occasions.
However, Kenny has had far more gigs than I have. In this show, I find out how he’s been doing and what he’s done that I haven’t.

While I’ve only been doing comedy for a few months, I’ve been writing funny stuff for years.
Very little of it has been produced.
In fact, the closest I’ve been to having comedy produced is talking bollocks on podcasts. Which brings us to this week’s show.
(There is an alternative version of that setup, with the punch “…is making love to my wife” but I felt that was unfair on her as much as it is me. My jokes have to a) punch up, b) be about me, or c) have a self-deprecating punchline.)
In this week’s Mic Time, I update you on some recent trips to Manchester, a cancelled trip to West Yorkshire, and unearth a performance by some actual actors of my first sitcom script, The Riding Officer, back in 2012. (Spoiler: it isn’t brilliant, but it has jokes.)
The search for guests continues, so if you’re interested or know someone how might be, let me know!
Enjoy the show, and take it easy!
This week’s Mic Time features another comedian I saw at Leeds back in February. Adam Blaize performed a character called Immodium Nitrate, which he talks a little bit about in this week’s podcast. But that’s just a small aspect of what Adam has done, and I think you’ll find this an good chat with some interesting links to check out at the end.
Before the chat with Adam, there is also a bit of an update from me on my recent trip to Manchester’s Creatures Comedy Club.

Good to be back with another chat on Mic Time. A few weeks ago I popped down to Leeds for the Scratch ‘n’ Sniff night and got talking to Josh O’Leary. He is this week’s guest, and tells us a bit about how he got started.
Before that, there’s an update on my recent 5 minute slot at The Stand in Newcastle, with a few recollections about who I met there, and as usual I’ve squeezed in a few clips.

I’m Mick Karma, and welcome to my podcast. If you were here last time, you would have heard my chat with Fran Garrity, a comedian from Teesside who I first met back in September 2023 when he co-presented a course on getting started in stand-up comedy.
We continue as Fran explains what it was like to receive a “joke request” at a gig in December.
We also chat about jokes, fantasy gigs, and the Stockton on Tee-Hees Intro to Stand-up Comedy course run by Shoecake Comedy.
Oh, and Linda and Tony.

I’m Mick Karma, and welcome to my podcast. In Mic Time, I chat with comedians and share my experiences about the first stages of stand up comedy. I first performed in October 2023, and so far it has been a thrilling - and fraught - experience!
Recently, I chatted with Fran Garrity, a local comedian and radio presenter, about how he got started in comedy.
In the first episode of Mic Time, you can hear the first half of the chat, along with my thoughts and recollections of attending a stand up comedy course which was partly run by Fran himself.

I’ll be back next week for the second half of this chat, and a few more recollections about my first steps into stand up comedy.
