I'm on again about storytelling and little craft bits, and I just wanted to share a little bit of craft stuff and my love for storytelling. Tomorrow I'll be at the same thing, with a reading from two books and reflections. Warm wishes. Michael. The photograph was taken when we were doing some filming with the camper van during the summer. And now the camper van is gone. I sold it. it feels like the end of a chapter in my life. What next? Don't know.

My stories in the past decade tend towards memoir, and I try to create stories from experiences that were healing, if not miraculous. In fact I think life is a miracle. which is another way of saying I believe in metaphors. and there could be no poetry if it were not for the metaphors. 

So here's a little reflection on storytelling and it contains a short reading from a book I wrote many years ago called Priest. I hope you enjoy it.  I was out walking this morning, August 14 on the beach at Carrickfinn and it came to me that I should about the Mammy, and the great Mother and the way she is everywhere sometimes, even in the blue of the ocean. And then I thought I'd add this little reflection on where I get stories and how I try to find something beautiful in the sky nowadays.

Sitting on the edge of the world in Glencolmcille, close to Malin Beg, having a wonderful time listening to the ocean and the wind. the wind blows a bit on this recording but I wanted to share the immediacy of what goes through my head on such a threshold of unknowing. The ocean is a good teacher.

Big fat single podcast for this August Weekend. Lughnasa. I was remembering times I ate a lot of fish because I'm stuffing myself with good fish here in Donegal at the moment. When we were young we watched the bishop light a fire outside the church door. the symbolism of light that overcame the darkness. And in the festival of Lughnasa in ancient Ireland the same symbolism was at play. But even in modern society, culture night in Ireland and Nuit Blanche in France are also modern attempts to create ritual around the same symbolism. So since it's the August Bank Holiday I'll be talking about Lughnasa and the light overcoming darkness this weekend. More tomorrow.

Every story has a shape.Sometimes it's called  a Thru Line ; that thread that we are drawn to and can't leave the story until we find out what happened. And we break it down into three sections in a story; Purpose, Passion and Perception. 

So here I've tried to say a few words about all this, and I've tried to keep it very light and simple. Hope you enjoy. Stories make us human. I think they're like what birds do when the dance and preen and caw. I think seagulls are never done telling each other stories about the waves.
