This week, as violent protests continue around the United States, we look at the controversial deployment of federal authorities to locations like Portland, Oregon, and the justification for this given by the DHS.
As we lead off this week, we get an election update on Joe Biden's search for a vice president, with some pundits thinking he may have narrowed down his choice. However, we're wondering what has changed about this leading prospect's appearance and demeanor in recent days, and could this be an indication of her likelihood for being Biden's choice?
We also examine the controversies surrounding the deployment of federal authorities to locations like Portland, Oregon, where the DHS has said that it is the federal government's responsibility to protect federal property in these locations. Finally, as the debate over the use of masks ensues, some police departments around the country are refusing to enforce mandates for wearing facemasks in public. We examine all this and more on this week's edition of Middle Theory.

As questions loom over the use of federal law enforcement to curb protests in Portland and other places, we look at the fine line between contact tracing technologies and the erosion of privacy.
As we begin another week, we remember Representative John Lewis, who passed away recently after a battle with cancer; also, controversy surrounds recent petitions calling for grocery chain Trader Joe's to change the name of some of its products and labeling. However, our main focus this week involves recent ongoing protests in cities like Portland, Oregon, where things took a turn for the weird over the weekend with U.S Customs and Border Protection agents getting involved, as well as the appearance of a mysterious, scantily-clad female protestor that has been dubbed "Naked Athena" after photos of her performance appeared online.
Meanwhile, as the pandemic ensues in America and around the world, many privacy experts have concerns about the use of apps and other technologies to aid in "contact tracing" to help slow the spread of the virus. Does the use of technology to help save lives in the midst of the panic have an Orwellian dark side? We explore this, and other ideas on this week's edition of Middle Theory.

This week we look at antiscientific biases, how politics on both the left and the right can influence them, and why medical masks have become a political statement in America.
As Federal prosecutors warn that granting Ghislaine Maxwell bail could be equivalent to allowing her to disappear from this reality and never stand trial for crimes she may have helped facilitate, we look at odd election developments in the Lone Star State, and also how autocracies around the world are working to stifle independent journalism. How soon before similar problems begin occurring in the "Western World"?
Then getting to the heart of the discussion this week, Dr. Anthony Fauci recently warned that "antiscientific" biases prevail in the United States. Nothing has become more emblematic of that, perhaps, than the notion that choosing whether or not to wear medical masks in public has become so politically polarized in America. This issue raises meaningful points both in terms of politics, and science... but should the idea of "antiscientific" biases or practices also be seen in terms of "right and left", or are both political viewpoints just as guilty in their own way? We take the middle path as we examine these, and other issues this week on Middle Theory.

With the arrest of Jeffrey Epstein associate and former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, we examine questions about the late sex offender's fortune, whether he was as rich as some claim, and Epstein's possible connections to the intelligence community.
Following news of a bombshell report that Russia had been offering bounties on US soldiers, a recent UN report claims that the assassination of Qassem Soleimani was unlawful, which may not bode well for the Trump administration, which continues to try and curb the record number of leaks that have occurred during Trump's presidency. Also, a new political contender may have entered the 2020 race: Kanye West, who made the announcement of his presidential bid on Twitter over the weekend.
However, the big story this week involves the arrest of Ghislaine Maxwell, former girlfriend and accused sex offender associate of the late Jeffrey Epstein. We still have a number of questions about Epstein, who he really was, how he made his money, and what a new Netflix documentary on Epstein and his illegal activities over the years didn't say about the man who many call a Billionaire... but was he even really that? We explore all these questions this week on Middle Theory.

This week we examine claims against the accuracy of former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton's new book, and the ongoing struggle communities are facing in the age of the COVID-19 pandemic.
What are the real "nightmare scenarios" that could occur this November with the U.S. election? We've had a number of issues on our mind recently, ranging from why we haven't made Election Day a federal holiday, to the ongoing debate over mail-in voting in 2020, with rising concerns about the second-wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile, many of us stepped outside over the weekend to see that there was a fine coating of Sahara dust around our homes, but that's not all that was red in recent days: Former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton's new book has drawn criticism from the left and the right for what many consider to be inaccuracies it may portray. Then shifting gears, we turn our attention to the ongoing struggle many communities face in light of the COVID-19 threat, with states like Texas and California closing many businesses that had only recently managed to reopen. We are a long way from being free of the problems presented by COVID-19, and now is more important than any time to be maintaining safe and healthy practices.
Finally, with many of the positive social changes that are being fought for in our communities right now, are there moments where we should recognize where efforts pushing for change might go "too far"? We hear from our friends in the community known as the "Intellectual Dark Web" and get their take on these, and other issues this week on Middle Theory.
