This week as the quest for social justice ensues in America, we look at striking a balance between conflict and tolerance, and the controversies surrounding late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon.
This week, after an update on Seattle's "CHAZ" (which was recently redubbed the "CHOP"), we shift our attention over to a controversial new Wikileaks-style site that is aimed at being a clearinghouse for information obtained by hackers about law enforcement. Also, President Trump has a problem, and its name is John Bolton.
Then getting to the heart of the conversation, while many social justice advocates have taken to the internet to seek out and highlight instances of intolerance, what is often missing appears to be a "path to redemption" for those who actually caused offense with remarks or actions. The recent controversy involving Late Night stars Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon showcase these kinds of problems; we also examine the idea of the "Political Non-Apology," and finally, issues pertaining to the Supreme Court in recent news.

The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone in Seattle has aroused controversy over what some call a "takeover" by political activists in the city. But has media reporting on the situation been accurate, and does it represent autonomy, anarchy, or something else?
What is "cancel culture", and is it entirely new, or just a new manifestation of something that has been with us long since before social media? We lead off by looking at that, as well as an "Election Update" which views the latest polls, and the ongoing search for Joe Biden's VP pick. Then getting to the heart of the conversation, the so-called Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone in Seattle has received widespread media attention in recent days, with some that include President Trump calling it a "takeover" by anarchistic factions, and others likening it to being a Woodstock-like "utopia." The truth, as usual, exists someplace in the middle, and we go in search of answers as we wade into this controversy this week on Middle Theory.

This week continues our analysis of the public response to George Floyd's killing and opposition by military leaders to President Donald Trump's desire to deploy the military in curbing violence during protests.
"Things will get worse before they get better," or so the saying goes. This week, as historic unrest continues in the wake of George Floyd's killing, news of protestors being interrogated by FBI and NYPD have raised concerns, and point to U.S. intelligence interest in possible "hijacking" of protests by various groups. Meanwhile, military leaders past, and present, have opposed President Donald Trump's recent aims to use military forces to curb violence during protests, and Minneapolis has proposed defunding and disbanding its police force. We wade into the fray with our analysis on this edition of Middle Theory.

This week we discuss the tragic killing of George Floyd, the historic social unrest that has resulted, and how political leaders have responded to protests now occurring around the world.
On May 25, 2020, a series of events began to unfold that would change the world. George Floyd, a black man, died while being restrained by law enforcement officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Derek Chauvin, a white officer with a record of complaints for which he had not been previously penalized, was filmed pressing his knee against Floyd's neck, as Floyd complained that he could not breathe. Floyd, handcuffed and lying face down, became unresponsive and is believed to have died prior to the arrival of first responders. Chauvin was later charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.
The resulting civil unrest has been of truly historic proportions, on par with the upheaval seen during the L.A. Riots and following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr in 1968. On this edition of the program, after analyzing the social, media and political response to Floyd's killing, we are joined by Lt. Tim McMillan, a retired law enforcement officer and former implicit bias instructor, and recognized expert with the Law Enforcement Action Partnership. McMillan talks with us about race issues in law enforcement, the idea of "contact theory," and concerns over the "militarization" of law enforcement.

As America slowly begins to reopen in the midst of COVID-19, controversy surrounds recent remarks made by presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden and President Donald Trump.
This Memorial Day weekend, mayhem ensued as Americans flooded to beaches and other outdoor areas, sparking public concerns amidst the lingering threat of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, Joe Biden's recent appearance on "The Breakfast Club" aroused controversy as the presumptive Democratic nominee advised that voters who were unsure of whether they would vote for him or Donald Trump "ain't black." It was the latest gaffe made by Biden, who seeks to challenge Donald Trump in this November's election. We wade into the latest controversies and examine their meaning this week on Middle Theory.
