On this edition of Middle Theory, a combination of issues and current events are addressed, within the broader discussion of free speech in America, issues with the education system, and identity politics. 

On this edition of the podcast, Reverend Oakley (who is paradoxically also our resident secularist) joins Micah for a "riffin'" discussion on philosophy, as it applies to issues being faced in America today. For those who aren't aware, "riffin'" is a term Micah borrows both from his line of work as a guitarist, as well as a term used by his good friend Vance Pollock in relation to a free-form conversation over a number of related or unrelated topics.

Subjects we touch on include free speech, protests on American campuses and universities, and the political discourse occurring in the media in the era of Donald Trump. We also hone our sights on statements made by HBO host Bill Maher, who is under fire (as usual) for saying that he hopes for a recession, knowing that this could be the end of Trump's presidency. Whether or not it's a realistic objective, is it anything that one should really "hope" for, considering the broader repercussions?

We also touch on issues pertaining to politics, centrism, the state of the media, Liberalism and Conservatism, and a range of other ideas, in addition to a slew of emails from our listenership in response to last week's episode on the death of Anthony Bourdain and discourse on the issue of depression and suicide... all of this and more on this edition of the Middle Theory podcast.

This week on Middle Theory, the loss of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain sparks a conversation about societal issues with depression and cooperative efforts toward the prevention of suicide. 

We pick up where we left off last week with an examination of the mysterious "illness" that U.S. diplomats, first in Cuba, and now in China, claim to have been afflicted by while working at foreign embassy locations. Some in the medical community have expressed skepticism over the claims, and feel that justifying the idea of an alleged "secret weapon" could be damaging to the medical field. We wonder how the diplomats in question might feel about that sentiment.

Elsewhere, Attorney General Jeff Sessions is in the spotlight for recent remarks he has made about the use of marijuana (also known as "Jazz Cabbage" or "The Devil's Lettuce"), as well as his renewed focus on protection of religious institutions in America. We analyze some of the points and counterpoints, as well as the inconsistencies in some of Mr. Sessions' arguments.

Then getting to the MID, we examine the tragic loss of celebrity Master Chef Anthony Bourdain, and the recent appearance of suicides which also includes Kate Spade and others. How can the issues of depression and self-harm be better understood and dealt with more effectively? * A Medical Mystery Grows as U.S.

This week on Middle Theory, a recent TODAY show appearance has placed former president Bill Clinton at the heart of the #MeToo debate. 

As we're kicking things off on this week's program, we start off with questions about recent scientific studies that argue there are far greater health concerns associated with alcohol consumption. How does this compare with similar studies that have gone back and forth on the health benefits--or concerns--associated with coffee consumption? And when it comes to great debates in modern science, we can't help but touch on a now-famous appearance Bill Nye made on Tucker Carlson's show, where the two awkwardly debated the current consensus on climate science.

Elsewhere, Elon Musk has been arguing that we need a new website to help discern truth... and he has a funny idea about what it should be called. Add it to the other unusual ideas Elon has proposed in recent years. We also touch on a controversial Supreme Court decision which ruled in favor of a Colorado bakery that chose not to serve two gay men, based on the idea that the bakery was also discriminated against on the grounds of their religious views.

Then getting to the MID, we look at how Bill Clinton and author James Patterson's recent book tour kicked off with an unexpected bang, after TODAY correspondent Craig Melvin asked Clinton questions in relation to a two-decade-old Whitehouse scandal involving then-intern Monica Lewinsky. When asked about this in relation to the modern "Me Too" movement, Clinton seemed rather agitated and spoke the following day with comedian Stephen Colbert about being "mad at himself" after the interview aired. What the implications for this in the broader cultural context?

On this edition of Middle Theory, we examine the cultural phenomenon that is "The Intellectual Dark Web," a loosely-knit group of individuals who engage in debate and discourse pertaining to freedom of speech. 

Before we get to that part of the discussion, Micah is joined by Matthew Oakley, filling in for Mr. McNonymous, who joins us to discuss trending news which includes recent shooting events in parts of America, as well as news pertaining to the arrest of Hollywood producer (and scumbag) Harvey Weinstein, who was arrested and arraigned on rape charges, as well as those pertaining to criminal sex acts.

In similar #MeToo news, another father-like figure in American culture, Morgan Freeman, has become the latest to have allegations of sexual misconduct brought against him. While they contrast sharply with the actions of Weinstein, what is the bigger takeaway, and how should the public view such allegations against Freeman?

Then finally, we touch on the firestorm that continues following a New York Times Op Ed, in which Bari Lowell wrote about the so-called "Intellectual Dark Web," a group of thinkers from different walks of life who nonetheless share a passion for free speech and intellectual debate... which (of course) has led to them being branded "alt right." We look deeply at the claims and contrast the opinions of the group with that of critics in the media.

Finally, Mr. Oakley gives us his thoughts (and concerns) pertaining to a recent strikedown against measures proposed by Tulsi Gabbard; why should the American citizenry be concerned... or will they be? We examine these, and many other issues, on this edition of MIDDLE THEORY.

On this episode, we mark one full year since the beginning of the Mueller Probe, with the release of thousands of pages of Trump Tower meeting transcripts by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Continuing our discussion from last week about the so-called "Intellectual Dark Web" referenced in a New York Times opinion piece, we look at some of the ways the new intellectual movement in America is coming to fruition thanks to the likes of educators like Bret Weinstein, psychologist Jordan Peterson, and podcaster Joe Rogan.

We then look at the recent budget proposal plan put forth by Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, which would potentially balance the U.S. Budget within the next five years. For those saying it couldn't happen, it happened once before during the Clinton Administration (with the help of House Republicans under Newt Gingrich), who managed to balance the budget in just four years of a seven-year plan. We also spend some time looking at the history of budget balancing in U.S. politics.

Getting to the MID, we spend some time looking at the newly released transcripts of interviews that occurred between Donald Trump Jr. and a number of others, which outline discussions and meetings that took place at Trump Tower during meetings with Russians in 2016. According to the Committee on the Judiciary, "As a part of its oversight of the Justice Department’s enforcement of the Foreign Agents Registration Act and federal investigations into potential improper influence during the 2016 presidential election, the Senate Judiciary Committee conducted bipartisan staff interviews with and submitted written questions to witnesses regarding circumstances surrounding the June 9, 2016, Trump Tower meeting."

This week on Middle Theory, President Trump has the spotlight as he withdrew the United States from the Iranian nuclear deal, and the long-awaited meeting with North Korea looms near. What does this spell for US Foreign Policy going forward, and how will it impact peace in the Middle East and Korean Penninsula?

Before getting to the crux of the matter though, we tackle a number of pressing issues, including McNON’s dog vomiting all over the bed right at the start of the show, and some alleged ridiculous teenage fad called “The Deodorant Challenge.” Hint: It doesn’t challenge the smellier members of society to start taking care of their B.O. Side note: McNON and the Doctor both like Old Spice. What’s your odor-killing paste preference?

Things start to get a bit more serious as we transition away from teen fads and into the latest battle against the free press, as internet news giant Matt Drudge gets leery of President Trump’s issues with journalism. Drudge fears that the crusade against Fake News may eventually lead to a licensing requirement for journalists. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that the President has battled against journalists. The U.S.A.’s World Press Freedom Index dropped in rank from 20th in the world to 49th in the world during the Obama administration. The Bush Administration all but declared war against the free press. President Franklin Roosevelt’s relationship with the press was also strained, calling working newspapermen the evil of journalism.

There was lighter, more inspiring content in the first half of the show though - while there is an ongoing struggle between press freedom and politics, there’s also an ongoing struggle between iconoclasts and societal norms that perpetuate the world we live in today. We take a look at the so-called Intellectual Dark Web, recently profiled in the New York Times. This group of individuals ranging from Ben Shapiro to Bret Weinstein to Christina Hoff Sommers features political affiliations across the entire spectrum, but have the common ground of having been ostracized from their communities for speaking against the things they find to be wrong with conventional ideology. Their agreement is to disagree with each other, but to do so with grace and engage in a dialogue that opens up the possibility of new ideas.

Getting to the MEAT CUBE of the show, we discuss President Trump’s withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal agreed to in 2015. What are the implications this has on the upcoming sit-down with North Korean Supreme Leader, Marshal of the Republic, First Secretary of the Workers Party, Chairman of the National Defense Commission, and overall Shining Sun, Kim Jong-Un? We’ll find out soon, as they’re set to meet next month in Singapore.

We conclude the show with another piece of President Trump’s foreign policy: Trying to influence the World Cup. Did he inadvertently torpedo the three-way bid to host the 2...

This week on Middle Theory, as "Rudolph" Giuliani takes the place as President Donald Trump's new attorney, new questions arise in the continuing Robert Muller probe... will it ever end?

As we kick things off, we begin by looking at the Empire's response to the celebratory "May Fourth" holiday, which is popularly associated with Star Wars. Are we being told the ENTIRE truth about the Rebel Alliance and their aims and objectives? Also, is the secretive order known as the Jedi actually a dangerous cult?

Elsewhere, a New Orleans man has been in prison since 2010 for a crime he wasn’t convicted of... we weigh the elements of this story before looking at Michelle Wolf's controversial comedy routine at the 2018 White House Correspondents' Dinner. Realistically, did we expect that this would be anything BUT controversial?

Elsewhere, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Iran has been covering up secret information about its nuclear program... but the broader question on our minds is whether Netanyahu's dramatic presentation on this managed to convince President Trump to exit the Iran deal?

Finally, getting to the MID, we turn our focus to the current discussion of whether Robert Mueller may issue a subpoena for President Trump, and how this could spark a historic legal clash that could go right up to the Supreme Court. We examine all of these stories, as well as a bit of humorous "true crime" in the final minutes of this week's edition of the MIDDLE THEORY podcast.

After talking about ingredient and process preference, the hosts turn their attention to Jail-O king Bill Cosby, who was convicted of aggravated assault and could be sentenced to up to 30-years in prison, pending appeal.

Another food-related piece of news this week was the Waffle House Shooter, who stripped himself naked and went on a rampage in Antioch, Tennessee, killing four. A subsequent investigation into the killer, 29-year old Travis Reinking, revealed an intense paranoia, complete with Facebook postings referencing the Illuminati.

Moving into Syria, we take a look at progressive legend Noam Chomsky and his surprising signature on an open letter calling for continued U.S. military involvement in Syria, and then the relationship between the Kurdish militias, Syrian Democratic Forces, and ISIS is examined. Why is the American government supporting a war that directly empowers ISIS? Do the ends truly justify the means?

The MID this week takes a long look at the NXIVM cult in upstate New York, which has been blazoned across headlines after leader Keith Raniere and second-in-command, former Smallville actress Allison Mack, were arrested on federal sex trafficking charges.

What makes a cult leader? Why do people follow them? We close the discussion with an examination of the tendencies that cult leaders seem to have in common. Are any of them spookily familiar to people you know in your own lives? Perhaps evil really does lurk nearby.

This week on Middle Theory we remember the events surrounding the tragic Oklahoma City Bombing of 1995, on the date of its twenty-third anniversary. 

Kicking things off, Micah begins with an anecdote about one of the most unusual and little-known secret societies of the enlightenment era, the Oculists. From there, we turn our attention to stories about media deception in film and television, as well as Chris and Micah's personal experience with the kinds of tomfoolery that goes on behind the scenes with television networks. We also take a brief look at some of the trending items in the news as of late, which include the scandal involving Michael Cohen, who had not only been President Donald Trump's lawyer, but also had a third "mystery" client who turned out to be conservative talk host Sean Hannity.

However, on this date which in history, the tragic events surrounding the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma are remembered. According to FBI.gov, "The bombing was quickly solved, but the investigation turned out to be one of the most exhaustive in FBI history. No stone was left unturned to make sure every clue was found and all the culprits identified. By the time it was over, the Bureau had conducted more than 28,000 interviews, followed some 43,000 investigative leads, amassed three-and-a-half tons of evidence, and reviewed nearly a billion pieces of information. In the end, the government that [Timothy] McVeigh hated and hoped to topple swiftly captured him and convincingly convicted both him and his co-conspirators."

We look at the details surrounding the incident, which remains one of the most significant terrorist acts in American History, as well as the myths, conspiracies, and loose ends that are still associated with it.
