This week on Middle Theory, in addition to news and current events we examine the historical circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Columbia University Professor Jesús Galíndez in 1956. 

Have you ever felt like you've been caught in a political echo chamber? Well before you attempt to escape, maybe you should consider the latest studies, which suggest that listening to opposition can make partisanship even worse (once again, we recommend instead that you just listen to Middle Theory).

Elsewhere, the alleged attacks on U.S. Embassy employees in Cuba and China are now looking like they could have been microwave weapons; in other political news, chaos erupted at the first Brett Kavanaugh hearing this morning, with both opposition from Democratic politicians, as well as protestors who were on hand for the event.

Then getting to the MID, on March 12, 1956, Jesús de Galíndez, a Basque nationalist, Columbia University professor, and critic of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo, vanished after a student dropped him off near a subway entrance. Today, his disappearance remains a mystery, although it is widely believed that Galíndez was kidnapped and flown secretly to the Dominican Republic.

Joining us to discuss the case is Stuart McKeever, a retired attorney and author who began his legal career in the early 1960’s in New York City as a staff member of the Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Division. Although the Galíndez case stimulated widespread press coverage, it remained shrouded in mystery for decades. That is, until the publication of McKeever's book, Professor Galindez: Disappearing from Earth: Governments, Complicity, and How a Kidnapping in the Midst of American Democracy Went Unsolved. In it, author Stuart McKeever unravels the complicated roles of the Dominican and US governments, as well as the FBI, the CIA and some NY police officers, in the affairs.

* ECHO CHAMBERS: Caught in a political echo chamber? Listening to opposition can make partisanship even worse

On this edition of Middle Theory, we remember the life and political career of the influential Arizona Senator John McCain, who passed away on August 25, 2018. 

As we say so long to the month of August (and bid welcome back to those who have been "unplugged" for the last several weeks), Micah takes a moment to remind us how bad things could be... and in ancient Rome, that's precisely how things were. Public insults in ancient Rome often were so volatile that they made today's worst interactions on the World Wide Web look like an afternoon with the kids at the neighborhood jungle gym.

Then turning our attention to the news, we look at the bizarre claim that conspiracy theorist Alex Jones was caught with transgender pornography on his phone during a live InfoWars segment, as well as the now resolved "mystery" of a woman filmed outside a Texas home wearing what appeared to be restraints of some kind... and little else. Scandals surrounding the Catholic Church are causing choppy waters for Pope  Francis and the folks at the Vatican, and also, is it true that the FBI was secretly releasing information to the press, which they then exploited as a measure to assist them in obtaining FISA warrants? A North Carolina congressman seems to think so...

Then finally, we turn our attention to the passing of Arizona senator and political "maverick" John McCain, whose legacy was both respected by both political parties, and at times unpredictable. In his final act before the nation, McCain's funeral was planned carefully with a message of unity in times of political divisiveness... and with strong anti-Trump overtones. We examine this, and the broader influence McCain had on American politics.

This week on Middle Theory, the "takedown" of Trump associates Michael Cohen and Paul Manafort could point to illegal actions by the President himself. 

The oft-quoted, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" is generally attributed to Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire... although the phrase actually has its origins in the early 20th century. First appearing in a book titled, "The Friends of Voltaire," the misattributed fictional quote nonetheless has become a staple in Libertarian philosophy... would modern society benefit from a little more tolerance afforded those with opposing viewpoints?

Then getting to news, one of the big bombshells this week involves the recent accusations against Italian actress Asia Argento, who reportedly made a private settlement with a young actor who alleges he was sexually assaulted by Argento in 2013 when he was just 17 years old. On the heels of the tragic passing of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain (Argento's boyfriend at the time of his passing), we look at how certain aspects of the 2013 incident might relate to Bourdain's passing, as well as the broader #MeToo movement.

Then getting to the heart of the conversation, the verdicts on Michael Cohen and Paul Manafort were announced this week, in what many argue is the clearest evidence of wrongdoing on part of Donald Trump during the 2016 election. Equal attention has been given to the idea that Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his team may benefit from these verdicts, particularly if Cohen and/or Manafort end up cooperating with Mueller's ongoing investigation into possible Russian meddling in the election. We look at the situation from a variety of angles and see what legal scholars have to say about the situation, in what is arguably one of the most decisive developments to have occurred while Trump has been in office.

This week on Middle Theory we look at the ongoing "Battle for the Web," as well as concepts of civil disobedience, the ways that government is changing our values, and how we can aspire to change government for the better.

And we have liftoff... but before our stewardesses are able to make it around and serve up cocktails, our appetizer this week features a bit of Thoreau, who in his 1849 essay Resistance to Civil Government wrote, "to speak practically and as a citizen, unlike those who call themselves no-government men, I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government. Let every man make known what kind of government would command his respect, and that will be one step toward obtaining it.”

We then shift our attention to the recent Ohio election, in which a Democratic candidate may have lost the race due to the influence of an admittedly kooky Green Party candidate. Liberal voters in the district were understandably pissed about this, but should we necessarily look at third parties as doing more harm than good? How would our electoral system need to change in order for third parties to become more effective, and how does the idea of third parties contrast with ideas like political centrism, or nonpartisan news and podcasts (like Middle Theory)?

We then look at the scandal that has erupted around Omarosa Manigault Newman, who recently released tapes of Lara Trump’s $15, 000-a-month job offer, in the promotion of a new book, Unhinged, which the New York Times has called a "tell-some" portrayal of a few behind-the-scenes machinations of Team Trump. However, the biggest claim Manigault Newman has made wasn't even included in the book: that Trump had foreknowledge about the Clinton emails released by Wikileaks in 2016. WIll she provide proof of this claim, or will we be left to have to speculate about what, precisely, it all means?

Then getting to the MID, we shift our attention toward proposals in Washington that have to do with possible regulations for social media that would include things like mandatory location recognition and other information disclosures that could, in truth, be more harmful than helpful. Joining us to discuss this is Elizabeth Nolan Brown, an associate editor at Reason where she covers sex policy, free speech, criminal justice, women's health care, food regulation, and national politics. Her writing has also appeared in outlets such as Politico, Playboy, the Los Angeles Times, The Daily Beast, Fox News, The Week, The Dish, and Time magazine, and has been published by entities such as the New America Foundation and the Cato Institute.

Of course, last week's discussion about Alex Jones spills over into our discussion with Elizabeth... but libertarians and those on the political right aren't the only ones taking issue with the idea of people like Jones being banned from various platforms. Bill Maher has also spoken out against the ban on his program Real Time, joining other voices like Glenn Greenwald of The Intercept in asking about whether we're headed in the wrong direction with ideas and policies pertaining to social media.

On this episode, we look at the concept of Universal Basic Income and explore what would be required for such a system to succeed in changing society in beneficial ways. 

From the outset, we begin by looking at a few historical instances where great minds--specifically Greek philosopher Plato and folk singer Bob Dylan--express the merits of centrism in their personal philosophies. This leads us to some discussion about the general volatility in media today, and the way commentators tend to favor attacking one another over finding common ground or coming to any real sense of understanding of opposing views. Micah recounts a recent personal experience along these lines, which leads to some musing on the difference between when a person misspeaks, and when there is intentional deception when applying falsehoods about another individual.

This brings us back to Ana Kasparian, who we recently discussed on the program. After her emotionally-driven attack of YouTuber and former colleague Dave Rubin, we showcase a decidedly more objective presentation she recently gave on psychologist Jordan Peterson, in relation to his views on hot topics like "enforced monogamy" and equality of outcome. We also examine how Peterson's own views have changed somewhat in recent months, as a result of his interactions and debates on a national level. We argue, primarily, that common ground can be found between opposing views, and that reasonable, objective discourse can occur, and would, in fact, be more beneficial to current political dialogues than divisiveness, which is often steered by unsound or deceptive arguments.

Then later in the program, we turn our focus to the discussion of universal basic income, a controversial idea where all Americans would receive a certain amount of income on a monthly basis. While some argue against the idea of giving all Americans "something for nothing", there are many merits that such a system might bring to society, not least of which involves the ability for low-income earners to be able to make ends meet, without having to work multiple jobs or sacrifice simple comforts. The bigger question, however, is whether such a system could ever be implemented effectively? We examine the good and the bad, judging whether it could even be instated in America at all without extreme measures the likes of constitutional amendments.

Then in the wrap-up, we speak with an experienced professional cave diver named Kera, who explains some of the technical details about the recent Thai soccer team that was rescued from a flooded cave system. Finally, we also examine why Elon Musk has found himself in a contentious online exchange with some of the Navy divers who were involved in the rescue.

This week on Middle Theory, we address issues in the ongoing "Modern Dialectic" that include the death penalty, philosophy in American education, and the announcement of Donald Trump's latest Supreme Court pick. 

Kicking things off this week, the ongoing saga of YouTube call-outs and rebuttals takes the center stage, as Joe Rogan appears to somewhat regretfully respond to Alex Jones' recent accusation that the powers that be have "gotten to him," and hence (in Alex's mind) why the conspiracy host has not been invited back on Rogan's podcast. Rogan has a history of pointing out the absurdity of the notion that such "disputes" require constant responses and rebuttals, as featured in his conversation with Ana Kasparian from a few years back.

We then turn our attention to the recent news that six members of the Japanese Doomsday cult Aum Shinrikyo were recently executed, along with their leader, following decades of imprisonment after their participation in what is arguably the worst act of terror on Japanese soil in modern times. Some human rights advocates, including members of Amnesty International, have argued that the sudden implementation of executions under Japanese law presents cause for concern, as they differ greatly from standards in other modern democratic societies (namely the United States).

Then later in the program, we feature audio from a wide-ranging discussion Micah had with some friends of the Middle Theory program, which includes our friend Steve Reginer (aka "Grimsteak"), who along with James Cruz hosts the Cruisin' with Steak podcast. Also joining the discussion is our friend Taylor (aka "Aldon", as he will be known to some listeners of the Middle Theory program), and together with the Crusin' crew, we discuss issues that range from education to politics, Micah's advocacy for knowledge and discussion of climate changes (and understanding the science behind what effect humans are having on our environment), and even our mutual love for books.

Then in the final minutes of the program, we are able to catch the live announcement of Donald Trump's Supreme Court Pick of Brett Kavanaugh, a decision that will inevitably be met with derision and hostility. While Mr. Oakley argues that he is the more moderate pick, some are concerned that Kavanaugh will actually "gut Roe vs Wade," and that he is really anything but a more moderate-leaning conservative judge... an issue that will no doubt arise again in future discussions on Middle Theory.
