Midnight Looms

This is an episode for the kids dressed in black. We're going on a trip through the wide world of Hard, Heavy and brutal music, and that means lots of METAL, but we never do things conventionally around here, so we're gonna be freaking it at every twist and turn. If that sounds appetizing to you, or if you're up for an adventure into the wild unknown, then I hope you're gonna join this black parade, but it's not our host, GOBS, leading the parade. Oh no, my friends. You see, just before the world fell apart, we recorded a studio session inside Playdead Cult's DIY concert space, with an awesome Toronto GLAMCORE band called PHANTOM HIGH. If you haven't heard of them that's because they're fairly new, but tune in and you're gonna leave this episode understanding why we're so excited about this band. They're comprised of 4 mysterious, costumed HORROR fanatics, and fronted by a dark androgynous figure known as Peril Erinyes.

Phantom High grind through a selection of tunes from their CONJURED EP, and even DEBUT and brand NEW TUNE called BITCHFACE. What a twisted treat!

Who can get down to some ELECTRO SWING?! Tonight, we're joined by New York City DJ, Rich Green. Live, multi-camera, video mix show's are the new frontier for DJ's and Rich is at the forefront of it. He broadcasts on Twitch and his show really stands out. We're gonna chat about what he does and how he does it while we enjoy a segment of a recent set he dropped during an online event hosted by Toronto's own AMANDA RAYGUN. Rich blends together a mix of GLITCH HOP, FUNKY BREAKS, and the aforementioned ELECTRO SWING, with smiles and dancing being the only goals, before participating in our host's favourite segment, THE BRIDE (something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue).

Our host, GOBS, is in support on this one, bringing a moodier vibe, with fresh sounds from DESTROYER, DRUMMACHINEMIKE, FREDDIE FUTURE, GRIMES, HOLY FUCK, and JACQUES GREENE.

Admittedly, this show has been lacking in Urban music. Tonight we're gonna fix that by playing lots of HIP HOP and NEO SOUL. Here to help me with the selections is a woman who runs a pop culture website that you really should check out regularly to keep up with what's hot in TV, social media, and pop music. That site is THENIKKISIN.COM and tonight, we're joined, via Instagram, by Mz NIKKI SIN herself.

Nikki fills our host, Gobs, in on her picks for must-follow TikTok accounts, TV shows, and the female rappers that are taking over the game. Her picks are blended together with hot new music from DRAKE,ELEVEN & JASON D, EVERYTHING IS RECORDED, KAYTRANADA, MEGAN THEE STALLION, SHAD, SUM-01, THUNDERCAT, THE WEEKND, plus so much more goodness.

Urban music lovers don't miss this one!!

Tonight, we begin a brand new CRAZY 88, but tonight, it's not our host, GOBS, doing the selecting. We broadcast on Radio Western but the Covid-19 outbreak continues and as a result the station is closed, so we decided to open it back up virtually and hand over the keys to our community.

The music lovers take over the show, and with so many different tastes in the same virtual space, to call the resulting mix "eclectic" is an understatement! In this one hour JOURNEY-BY-DJ, you will hear Art Pop, Dubstep, Classic Rock N Roll, Emo, Folk Pop, Future Pop, Funk, Hip Hop, House, Indie Rock, Nerd Rock, Outsider 80s, Pop Punk, Thrash Metal, a girl riding a horse, and a tribute to STAR WARS and the BEASTIE BOYS at the SAME TIME! If you think you can handle that, let's get started.

So much happened during this week's journey-by-DJ. April was a tough month for most people, and our host, GOBS, believes that the best way to deal with adversity is to do what you can to create hope and joy. That's not so hard to do when you're special guests are 3 of the 4 ladies that make up the power pop band Known as THE BEACHES.

We also give away $150 to someone who's going through a particularly rough time.

The episode ends off with a very special and heart-felt tribute to our hosts real life hero. Author and artist, TEVA HARRISON. She's the one who taught Gobs about all that hope and joy stuff. A very special person indeed.

In addition to all the great conversation, we've got loads of NEW MUSIC from THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE, BRIGHTER GREEN, CROSSFAITH, DOUGLAS DARE, LIL SPHYNXX, PHANTOM HIGH, ONE IN THE CHAMBER, ROYCE 5'9", SHCURO, and so many more amazing tunes. What an hour of musical power!

Let's talk about MASHUPS. They're generally regarded as nothing more then novelty, used by DJs to breathe new life into overplayed tunes, but when unusual songs are combined in unusual ways, with complexity and a knack for noticing the commonalities in musical compositions, the mashup becomes an art form.

In this episode, our host, GOBS, is joined for a back-to-back set by his buddy, DJ HIGH VOLTAGE, who's brings a virtual crate of exclusive and unreleased mashups and when High Voltage says he's bringing mashups, we are all in for a treat.

Matty takes care of the HIP HOP and INDIE ROCK side of things, while our host, GOBS, keeps it electronic. A little DUBSTEP, some jJUNGLE, and he kicks off with a piece of fresh REGGAE, because you need a little in there if you're gonna do a 4/20 set right.

MUSIC FROM THE END OF THE WORLD. Our show's theme has never felt so relevant. It might seem like everything's terrible, but we can definitely tell you one good piece of news and it's that MUSI IS STILL AWESOME! We're gonna use it to run the gamut of emotions because great music helps you work through it.

The first half of the show eases you back into our JOURNEY-BY-DJ with some moody acoustic numbers, then we open up the REQUEST LINE for some tunes suggested by our listeners, and follow that with a couple of fun Corona Virus themed pop tunes. Yup they exist! Leave it up to our host, GOBS, to find such a thing.

During the second half, we go HARD, with a big election of socially conscious PUNK, some up-tempo, 80s inspired SYNTH tracks, and then end off totally bonkers, with some GABBER, because "BONKERS" IS THE NEW NORM!

Of course, none of those things hold the magnitude of excitement as the guy who comes through for a chat. Liam Cormier, frontman of Canada's Metalcore giants, the CANCER BATS, is our special guest, and his presence insures that the music stays brutally hard and blisteringly fast. We compliment Liam's selections with an eclectic array of musical goodness. Alt Country, Drum N Bass, Electronica, Footwork, and a few more punk & Metal tunes, all mixed together in this journey by DJ for late night music lovers.

Some artists create their own identity as an art piece, and occasionally, they manage to make something that is quite unique. Tonight's guest is one of those artists. Her name is DOLLY MOMOIRO and she lives as a magical monster girl. She's also the founder of TORONTO HARAJUKU STYLE, and captain of a J-Pop Idol Dance Team. With Dolly picking the tunes, things are going to get heavy, and we mean HEAVY. If you're into GOTH music or METAL, you've come to the right place. Punk rockers, we've got you covered too.

Dolly opens up about mental illness issues and being a black person in a scene where there are few dark skinned people. Real talk and killer tunes make this an important episode not to miss.

We end off with a tribute to "THE VERY BLACK HISTORY OF PUNK". This one is the perfect way for for late-night lovers of hard music to end off Black History Month.
