Midnight Looms

Tonight, we run down the TOP 22 SONGS OF 2020. Why "22"? It just so happens that on this show, we pretty much always play 22 songs per episode and that formula has worked quite well for this first year on air. So after much deliberation, the thing to do became obvious. Our regular 22 song episode, but assembled into a COUNTDOWN of the most important tracks released in this past year. What makes a song important? Our host, GOBS, gets into that as we climb towards that #1 spot.

On this show in which we play ALL GENRES of music, we absolutely agonize over the play lists, so you can bet some serious conversations and considerations went down. In the end, Gobs went with his gut and arrived at this list of the 22 best tunes released in 2020. You'll be hearing CANADIAN sounds from ARIEL SHARRATT & MATHIAS KOM, DESTROYER, E.L.F., JESSY LANZA, JUNIA-T & FAIZA, PANTAYO, PARAGON CAUSE, PAUL CHIN ft SHAD, and THE WEEKND, with big hitters from ARCA, BEYONCE, CARDI B, DAN DEACON, IDLES, KID BLOOM, THE KILLERS, MEGAN THEE STALLION, PHOEBE BRIDGERS, PROTOMARTYR, and RUN THE JEWELS. Wow, what a list! Where else would you hear all these acts in one jam-packed hour? ONLY MIDNIGHT LOOMS.

You could peak at the PLAYLIST below, but that would spoil the fun, so we hope. instead, you'll press PLAY and enjoy this final JOURNEY-BY-DJ of 2020. Terrible year! But the music was AWESOME!!

We celebrated XMAS with our first MULTI-CAMERA TWITCH STREAM and it went pretty awesome. DJ HIGH VOLTAGE, puts out a mix every year, around the holidays, called FESTIVE SPECIAL, and it’s always one of our favourite mixes of the year. It’s the 10-year anniversary of the series, so we invited High Voltage on the show to celebrate by dropping a couple "BEST OF" sets from the series. The pandemic situation made it a real bad idea for him to be in studio with our host, GOBS, though. Well in steps our friends at SEEROCKLIVE.COM with gear and Know-how for us to still make this HOLIDAY PYJAMA JAM happenI

When you picture a PYJAMA JAM, you probably picture fashionable people decked out in hip, Christmas themed PJs, probably purchased just for the event. Well, THIS AINT THAT! Our host, Gobs, and High Voltage hang out unshaven, and wearing the actual outfits they'll have on Christmas morning. If nothing else, this is the BUMMIEST Pyjama jam ever.

Next week, we're running down our favourite songs of 2020, but there are some tunes that have been released too recently to make it on to that list though they certainly deserve some recognition, so Gobs gets you warmed up for the High Voltage MEGA-MIXES by dropping some of those songs, as we weave in and out of Christmas themed tunes. Some pretty, some cheesy, some silly. NEW music from THE BLAZE VELLUTO COLLECTION, CLIPPING, NOSTALGIX, and ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER, with X-Mas jams from BOBNOXIOUS, THE POGUES, SHAGGY, and a DOUBLE KILL of CHILLY GONZALES. Gobs even DROPS THE NEEDLE on a DEVO tune from a RHINO RECORDS comp of UNRELEASED XMAS TUNES by INDIE BANDS.

Pyjamas, Live DJing, Vinyl, Christmas MASHUPS and BEARDS! This is how we do X-Mas around here!!!

Every once a while we get to use this platform to do something really unique and special. Tonight is one of those nights. Our guest is DAVIDE FERRARA. He used to be a DJ and passionate record collector. Davide has given it all up to leave his family and friends and ship off to a monastery in Wyoming to BECOME A MONK. Seriously! Given that our host, GOBS, knows little-to-nothing about real monks, this is a rare opportunity to ask some questions about what’s involved. And don’t you worry. We still explore the MUSIC FROM THE END OF THE WORLD. Davide brought along a playlist of his favourite tunes to hear them one final time, and this FUTURE MONK knows everything about ITALO. He's also got a soft spot for EURO and OLDSHCOOL RAVE tunes.

Gobs gets you warmed up with this month's SYN (Song You Need), care of ZORA JONES, which transitions into NEW up tempo RETRO WAVE from OCEANSIDE85, and NU DISCO from BLUE HAWAII and TIGER & WOODS. For the wind-down, we explore some AMBIENT vibes, including a tune by Canadian legends, DELERIUM.

This is one sentimental, informative, and phenomenal musical journey. "UNIQUE and SPECIAL"! That's what we said. What better way to kick off the HOLIDAY SEASON?!

One of the most brutally excellent bands this country has ever produced. Our host, GOBS, get you warmed up and ready with a set of new and heavy hitting INDIE ROCK from HEART ATTACK KIDS, MARILYN MANSON, NEW FRIES, POTTERY, THE WHITE SWAN, a killer QUEERCORE cover of a that PEACHES anthem we all love, and even an ode to the strange SYNTH WAVE legend that is GARY NUMAN.

Ever wonder what records you'll find in the METZ VINYL COLLECTION? We find out, before Gobs rounds off the program on a groovy vibe with the latest from CHROMEO, and the newest edition to his virtual crate of BEASTIE BOYS BOOTLEGS.

During the second half, Gobs opens up the REQUEST LINE and blends favourite Halloween jams selected by our community of late-night music lovers. Expect plenty of anthems from heavy hitters like BJORK, ROB ZOMBIE, and THE CRAMPS, mixed and mashed with the acts on the edge, like FIGURE, POLKADOT CADAVER, and POWER GLOVE.

For this first half, Gobs plays a bunch of eerie goodness from this year. The sound of Halloween 2020! Recently released music from ASHNIKKO, BIG MILK, ELZHI, HERMITESS, JESSIE REYEZ, REWS, THE OUTSIDE AGENCY, PANTAYO, and even brand new MARILYN MANSON. Plus a killer 2020 REMIX of a certain MICHAEL JACKSON tune that you've probably heard once or twice during spooky season ;)

Part 2 of our 3 week HALLOWEEN celebration. This week, we wanted to have a DIRTY ROCK N ROLL PARTY, and we've invited in the perfect band to bring that vibe. They're called PTERODACTYL PROBLEMS. A drag queen led quartet that basically take the entire history of rock, chew it up, and spit it out at you. They're so much fun live, and they haven't performed in 6 months. This is it! So you know it's gonna get rowdy. That's how Halloween should be, right?

We give the entire second half of the show to the band, leaving the first half for our host, GOBS, to set the mood, with the help of the MUSIC FROM THE END OF THE WORLD. NEW sounds from CAYLEY THOMAS, JEEN, SINGLE MOTHERS, and this year's POLARIS PRIZE winner, BACKXWASH, get blended beautifully with classics from THE BEASTIE BOYS, HUSKER DU, and even a SUBLIME sing-along. This episode is just jam-packed with CANADIAN sounds from the likes of CANCER BATS, CAT CLYDE, THE DIRTY NIL, HOLLERADO, JOEL PLASKETT, and RED ARMS. All this before Pterodactyl Problems take over for a filthy, sweaty (but masked up and socially distanced) Halloween party performance.

On MIDNIGHT LOOMS we do Halloween PROPER!!

It's a new month and we're kicking it off big. JESSY LANZA is joining us via Zoom. We assumed that she was back safe and sound in her home town Hamilton, Ontario, but it turns out she's still down in the States, coming to us from her California Stronghold :P

We live in a reality where we all spend more and more time alone and our lives are ruled by technology. Jessy's music has these ever present themes of isolation and synthetic reality and it makes her music very NOW. Jessy Lanza is truly an artist for the times, and on a show where we celebrate the music from the end of the world, you can bet we're really into what she's doing. GOBS chats with Jessy, while playing a medley of tracks from her new album, ALL THE TIME.

This episode begins with a blast of energy! HOUSE and FUTURE BASS from artists like HATIRAS, RAVEN, and a classic by CAJMERE. Gobs puts THE NEEDLE ON THE RECORD of a brand new piece of wax featuring "QUEER JUKE" by MELLEEFRESH & DJ GENDERFLUID. All that before a set of FOOTWORK, a Bootleg CHROMEO remix by Gobs, himself, some THUNDERCAT, some JUNIOR BOYS, a STONER JAM by MXXWLL, and a JANET JACKSON anthem just for Jessy.

With CANADIAN THANKSGIVING just around the corner, we end this episode with what we hope will be a tradition, just like it is on campus stations all over North America ;)

What an epic Journey-By-DJ. You won't hear a musical adventure like this anywhere else. Only on Midnight Looms!

Tonight we have a band inside our PLAYDEAD CULT DIY concert space with such a buzz around them, and this appearance is their first performance in 6 months! It's also the closest thing to a live concert we are going to get from them any time soon (thanks COVID!) so let's enjoy it and make the most of it too. They're called PANTAYO, and their debut album is on the POLARIS  PRIZE shortlist. They are 5 queer identifying ladies of Filipino descent who combine the traditional Kulintang instruments of their heritage with modern electronics to arrive at a sound that they describe as "Lo-Fi R&B Gong Punk".

While they sound check, our host, GOBS, takes you on a wild musical JOURNEY-BY-DJ, dropping some WORLD BEAT, some METAL, and some moody gothy stuff, kicking it all off with a fun throw back.

After the performance, we have Pantayo play a round of THE BRIDE (something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue), and then Gobs concludes another CRAZY 88 SPOTIFY PLAYLIST with some HIP HOP, electronic sounds, a powerful spoken word piece, and a special announcement about our guests for Halloween Season!

THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE, D'VINCI BLANCO, DANIEL CAESAR, ELLIS, IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT, J. BALVIN, JESSY LANZA, JULIANNA BARWICK, KUTIMAN, LIDO PIMIENTA, MARKUS FLOATS, MEGHAN PATRICK, TORONTO POOR BOY, and even a phone call from PHANTOM HIGH's NUMBER ONE FAN. All of this happens in one blistering hour of musical power.

So much new music. So much Canadian music. This is Midnight Looms.

This week, we're gonna take care of the pop culture heads. When we want an update on what's happening with movies, TV, and pop music, we turn to our official pop cult correspondent. A journalist and curator of THENIKKISIN.COM, Mz NIKKI SIN herself. If you've seen the video of her LAST VISIT, you know why we're excited to have her back. Nikki makes our host, GOBS, laugh his head off. She's gonna give some great recommends too, and she's also bringing a playlist of hot tunes that gets pretty freaking raunchy! All that before she and Gobs clear some space in our PLAYDEAD CULT studio sand throw down their best renditions of the WAP DANCE.

Nikki gives us her scoop on the new BATMAN movie, season 36 of THE CHALLENGE, BIG BROTHER CANADA, and TikTok's new creators payment system. All that before getting deep into TORY LANEZ shooting Megan Thee Stallion. Tory might be coming for Nikki next if he hears this. Just sayin'.

NEW MUSIC from ASHNIKKO, BACKXWASH, KHRUANGBIN, SINZERE, SUPERNAIVE, MILEY CYRUS and, of course, CARDI B & MEGAN THEE STALLION. Gobs also drops this month's SYN (Song You Need). It's by ARCA.

Check out Nikki & Gobs doing the WAP DANCE on our TIKTOK: @MidnightLooms
