  • Midnight Looms 046 – MAYA KILLTRON Home Performance – April 13 2021

What a way to end off a night! With a home performance from Toronto funkstress, MAYA KILLTRON. A first for this show! Maya is an accomplished violinist, incredible vocalist, 80s culture enthusiast, and she also has some connection with EGGO WAFFLES. Tune in to find out more ;)  Wow is MAYA KILLTRON ever fun to chat with, and what a voice on her! She sets a high bar for our first at-home performance, but that’s how we like to do things around here.
Our host, GOBS, matches Maya’s energy with a bunch of BOOTLEG VINYL RARITIES from MARK RONSON and D’ANGELO, funktafied by B BRAVO and TEEKO, PRINCE remixed by MYSTERIOUS SINNERS, and CHAKA KHAN cut up by bootleg masters, DEEKLINE and ED SOLO. Then Gobs show’s off a piece of wax from his collection, featuring BREAKS legends, STANTON WARRIORS, alongside AC SLATER & EVA LAZARUS. You’ll also hear NEW MUSIC from ANOMALIE and CHROMEO, FIRESTAR SYSTEM, HAVIAH MIGHTY ft. OLD MAN SAXON, JIMMY BRICKZ ft. FAIZA, MAYLEE TODD, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and ROBIN HATCH. As if that wasn’t enough, Gobs calls up the NUMBER ONE FAN of an incredible band named PANTAYO, and we kick it all off with an ode to HIP HOP royalty! Rest in power DMX!!
We can’t thank Maya Killtron enough for getting us dancing, smiling, and laughing as the good vibes just flowed. This is one extra-funky dance party of an episode. Listen standing up so you don’t look weird when you start to wiggle. Ha!

It’s good to be back! Five weeks off and now we’re thrilled to be back on air for our weekly JOURNEY-BY-DJ FOR ADVENTUROUS LATE-NIGHT MUSIC LOVERS. We have officially unlocked the next phase of this program. Tonight, for the first time, we’re together for a full 90 minutes instead of the 1 hr program that you will find if you dive into the archive. To celebrate, we have such an amazing artist gracing us with her virtual presence. Coming to us via Zoom from her home in Montreal, it’s THANYA IYER. An artist who defies categorization, but if we had to describe it we’d say she makes AVANTE BAROQUE ART POP with heavy NEO CLASSICAL and JAZZ elements. Eccentric indeed, and we like eccentric.
Our host, GOBS, matches Thanya’s vibe with a selection NEW sounds by Canadian artists, all featuring strong, proud, female voices. Contributions from BERNICE, EL MICHELS AFFAIR, EVE PARKER FINLEY, THE FLOWERS OF HELL, JEEN, MISE EN SCENE, PURLIEU ft. O’HAARA, SHN SHN, WORMWOOD, YARDS, and this months SYN (SONG YOU NEED), by Montreal based, Algonquin, two-spirited writer and composer, KIZIS.
New, exceptional, passionate, boundary pushing music. That’s what we’re all about and now we get to give you even more of it. This is MIDNIGHT LOOMS.

  • Midnight Looms 044 – MARK OLIVER – February 23 2021

Tonight we’re celebrating an anniversary. 10 years ago, our host, GOBS, published an article that he wrote for Toronto’s seminal harm reduction org, TRIP (Toronto Raver Info Project). The article was on THE RISE AND FALL OF THE TORONTO RAVE SCENE, which was one of the biggest rave scenes in the world during the 90s. It’s an amazing story but one that few people have ever put in the time to tell properly which is why this particular article is quite important. A decade after its publishing, it still gets hits every single day, and it’s because there are thousands of people to whom those rave days meant so much. That’s why we wanted to celebrate this anniversary and we have the perfect guest joining us to help with the festivities. He’s the guy who started it all! One of Canada’s best known DJs. MARK OLIVER is on the program, to chat with about the beginning’s of the Rave scene and, as if that wasn’t enough, he’s also drops an EXCLUSIVE MIX of EARLY TORONTO RAVE ANTHEMS.
This anniversary is a timely one because in 2021 that OLDSCHOOL RAVE sound is BACK! Since we’ve got Mark Oliver covering the authentic oldschool sound, Gobs drops the NEW STUFF. Fresh choons from BENEE FT. GRIMES, BEYOND THERAPY & ECHOFLY & ANGIE BROWN, FOUR TET, SOLARDO & ROWETTA, and SKELETON KING. He even drops a dope BOOTLEG VINYL, and plays an X-TEND-A-MIX of BURIAL’s “druggy” new single, before ending it all off with gorgeous sounds from BEVERLY GLENN-COPELAND. What a ride!!
If you partied in TORONTO in THE 90s, or you’re a lover of RAVE CULTURE, crank this one to the max! Tonight we celebrate OUR SCENE on MIDNIGHT LOOMS.

  • Midnight Looms 043 – YVES JARVIS – February 16 2021

We have an amazing guest joining us tonight, via Zoom, from his home in Montreal. YVES JARVIS is on the show! If we had to describe his sound, we would say he makes “AVANTE-PSYCHEDELIC-FOLK-POP” but even that doesn’t quite describe it. He’s doing his own thing and it’s amazing and we love that. Yves writes, records, and mixes his music almost completely alone. He records predominantly outdoors, and each of his albums has a different colour theme. This latest one, titled SUNDRY ROCK SONG STOCK is green. We play a selection of tunes from the album while chatting with Yves about all of those wonderful things that make him so unique. We even get down to some real talk. Whether you’re already a fan or a curious late-night music lover, this is not an interview to be missed!
It’s BLACK HISTORY MONTH so we begin this ride with an ode to the Civil-Rights Movement pioneer and true god of music that is BILLIE HOLIDAY. WE ARE NOT WORTHY! Our host, GOBS, then drops a short selection of songs by acts with connections to our home city LONDON, CANADA. Tunes by SHAD and JUNIA-T FT. FAIZA, with BRAND NEW SOUNDS from AKUA and HAVIAH MIGHTY. The episode concludes with Yves Jarvis selecting some fresh stuff from JENNIFER CASTLE and SARAH DAVACHI, alongside CLASSICS from CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, and THE BAND. That’s before Gobs takes back over to end the night proper. A STONER JAM by SLUM VILLAGE’s ELZHI, new music from MADLIB, and even a NEW SEGMENT we call SAMPLE CHAIN.
All that happens in this HOUR OF MUSICAL POWER that we call MIDNIGHT LOOMS. Wow!

Gobs also calls up the NUMBER ONE FAN of our former guests, HOT LIPS, and announces the rather EPIC guests and themes we've got planned for our remaining JANUARY broadcasts. Clearly, this little music podcast shows no signs of slowing down in 2021. We only do it BIG around here!
We want to know what you want to hear, so SEND IN YOUR REQUESTS! [email protected] or hit us up on our SOCIALS.
