  • Midnight Looms 056 – PARTNER – June 22nd 2021

Tonight, we wrap up another month and our Pride celebrations and we’ve got such a fun band joining us to do it. Montreal based, QUEER, POST CLASSIC ROCK duo, Lucy and Josee, better known as PARTNER! Chris Deville, of Stereogum, wrote that “few bands sound like they’re having more fun than Partner”, and you’re gonna hear a set of tunes from their latest album, NEVER GIVE UP, to demonstrate that fun. Trust us, you’re in for a good time, especially if you can get down to some ROCK N ROLL vibes.
Being the final episode before our summer break, along with the end of another CRAZY 88 SPOTIFY PLAYLIST and our final broadcast during Pride Month on top of all that, our host, GOBS, did his best to pack this episode with epic goodness. He calls up the NUMBER ONE FAN of RETRO WAVE band, ACTORS, drops a ground breaking RARE VINYL featuring Baltimore drag queen and queer icon, MISS TONY, and christens the brand new release from LEATHERS as this month’s SYN (Song You Need). All that before sending you gently into a new day with a set of essential QUEER COUNTRY from PARKDALE REBELS, ORVILLE PECK, K.D. Lang and more.
This episode is also PACKED with NEW MUSIC from ART D’ECCO, THE BEACHES, THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE, BOBBY DOVE, CHURCH OF TREES FT. CAROL POPE, JUANY BRAVO & STARVING YET FULL, NIGHTJACKET, and PET SHOP BOYS.
Now that you know what's up, let’s make “POST CLASSIC ROCK” happen!
“It’s hard to be out of the closet when you can’t even be out of the house” - Gobs & Partner
This may have been “Quarantine Pride 2” but we sure managed to have a blast with it anyways! See you in August ;)

  • Midnight Looms 055 – RUSSELL LOUDER – June 15th 2021

Our host, GOBS, spent the past week doing a lot of thinking about the recent act of TERRORISM committed in our home city, LONDON, CANADA, along with the PANDEMIC, and came to the studio with something to say that he felt is different and worth while. Tonight, he uses the power of voice and great music to hopefully inspire HOPE. Gobs shares his perspective with the help of a gorgeous Egyptian folk song by JERUSALEM IN MY HEART, a mind expanding essay by radical thinker, ARUNDAHTI ROY, and even some wise words from TOOL’s MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN. All this before we get you pumped and prepped for INDIGENOUS PEOPLE’S DAY and then continue our month-long PRIDE celebration with an amazing special guest.
Non-Binary, East-Coast raised, Montreal based SYNTH POP producer and vocalist, RUSSELL LOUDER, has just an incredible voice. But Russell’s talents go beyond the singing. Their lyrics are beautifully introspective, and the music marries with the vocals more coherently then we’re used to hearing from synth pop acts. We enjoy a set of selections from Russell’s HUMOR album while getting down to some real talk with Russell, who is both intelligent and lots of fun. Gobs refers to them as “the new ELVIS”. Tune in and find out why ;)
    Check out this line-up! ...
NEW MUSIC from CARLA LUNA WHITE, LONDON GRAMMAR, and RHYE.
INDIGENOUS sounds from THE HALLUCI NATION (FKA A TRIBE CALLED RED), DAVID STRICKLAND, ISKWE, RIIT, and TANYA TAGAQ.
CANADIAN tunes from AUSTRA and YVES JARVIS.
The sounds of true LEGENDS: EURYTHMICS, FLEETWOOD MAC, FLORENCE +THE MACHINE, KRAFTWERK, and LA ROUX.

REMIXES by GIGAMESH, INDIA JORDAN, PAUL WOOLFORD, STEVE ANGELLO, and SKREAM.

“If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be part of your revolution” - EMMA GOLDMAN

  • Midnight Looms 054 – POP CULT SUMMER with NIKKI SIN – June 8th 2021

PRIDE MONTH continues and how the hell do we match the inertia of LAST WEEK? By reaching out to our official POP CULTURE correspondent, NIKKI SIN, from THENIKKISIN.COM. This’ll be Nikki’s fourth appearance on the show and we love it when she comes through, because Nikki is a riot always. And it ain't no Zoom meeting tonight. Nikki’s with us inside our PLAYDEAD CULT Studio Space. Socially distanced of course, but still, how scandalous.
Whenever Nikki Sin is on the show it’s all about POP MUSIC and URBAN vibes. We broadcast from London, Canada and we start tonight’s ride with a set of sounds from local artists. New music from HAVIAH MIGHTY, JIMMI BRICKZ ft. FAIZA, SHAD, SUM-01, and EDDINGTON AGAIN remixed by AKUA. And that’s just the local stuff! We also drop the freshest from BILLIE EILISH, LIL NAS X, MACHINE GUN KELLY, MARINA ft. PUSSY RIOT, and OLIVIA RODRIGO. We round off the episode by having Nikki do THE BRIDE (something old, something, new, something borrowed, something blue), and then a quick ode to EUPHORIA.
In addition to exploring pop culture on her WEBSITE, Nikki sin is co-host of the CAFFEINE CONFESSIONALS podcast, and author of THE ANXIETY DIARIES. While we drop her tunes, we get her recommends on summer time TV, and her music predictions for summer of 2021. She’s never wrong about these things. Tune in and get filled in on what’s up.

  • Midnight Looms 053 – PRIDE PARTY REQUEST LINE – June 1st 2021

Tonight, we kick off PRIDE MONTH proper and we do it with YOU. Our host, GOBS, opens up the REQUEST LINE and plays your favourite PRIDE PARTY JAMS.
We wish we could just focus on the party, but things are not well here in Canada. Our INDIGENOUS FRIENDS AND FAM ARE HURTING. Anyone with a heart is hurting. And we’re still gonna be celebrating life tonight because at times like this, coming together as a community and celebrating is the MOST important. So for this first half hour, we wanted to do something for our indigenous brothers and sisters and use the power of great music to do it. Gobs lays down a set of powerful songs by DJ SHUB, KIZIS, LEANNE BETASAMOSAKE-SIMPSON, and the living legend that is BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE (WE ARE NOT WORTHY), while offering some thoughts on CANADA DAY.
The rest of the episode is a celebration of HOPE and LOVE, because we all need that right now. Gobs helps us to blow off some serious steam with a bunch of fierce Pride party anthems (both current and future), before throwing down a SAMPLE CHAIN that explores the infamous APACHE BREAK, and rounding out the ride with a smooth FUNK number from his favourite band, The BEASTIE BOYS. Expect NEW MUSIC from APASHE & HIGH KLASSIFIED, AVA MAX, HONEY DIJON, OF MONTEREAL, and QUARTER-LIFE CRISIS. Canadian sounds from BEVERLY GLENN COPELAND, DEBORAH COX, PEACHES, and VENETIAN SNARES, alongside CLASSICS from CHER and PRIMITIVE RADIO GODS. Some MADONNA mashed up with LADY GAGA, and even a P.M. DAWN RARITY.
How do we even fit all this into 90 minutes?! Tune in and listen while Gobs works his magic!!

  • Midnight Looms 052 – PARAMEDIC WEEK with SCOTT LOYST – May 25th 2021

Splatter Art Zombie Portrait that Scott made for Gobs
This week is an important week. It’s PARAMEDIC WEEK here in Canada and you might not have known that because, for some reason, it’s not a week that we really celebrate, but we want to change that, because paramedics are true heroes of our society. They’re at almost every call. Every accident. Every bad thing that happens, paramedics are there. WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS RUNNING AWAY FROM DISASTER, THEY’RE THE PEOPLE THAT RUN TOWARDS IT and they don’t get nearly enough credit for it. So tonight, we have a VIP REQUEST LINE taking song suggestions and dedications to individual paramedics.
We also have a special guest in the place to help us celebrate this under celebrated occasion. Our host, GOBS, hangs out with his buddy, SCOTT LOYST, who is indeed a paramedic but there’s so much more to Scott than his job. He is, in fact, THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON GOBS KNOWS. Scott’s a big SKATEBOARDING ADVOCATE. He documents his visits to skate parks and posts them on his BLOG, as well as his INSTAGRAM. He’s recently been working with the CANADIAN SKATEBOARDING TEAM on a new project. He also makes art out of discarded materials he finds at the skate parks he visits. He threw a rave to propose to this wife. He has a lot of exotic pets, a killer vinyl collection, and a SELF PORTRAIT TATTOO. We’re thrilled to have him on to spin some jams. PUNK ROCKERS you’re gonna love Scott’s song picks.

It’s the paramedic takeover! In addition to the SKATER friendly punk jams, you’re gonna hear some 80s CLASSICS, some 90s URBAN sounds, Some EMO, some EDM, POP and INDIE ROCK. Expect NEW MUSIC from ANCIENTHRONES, CURVED WALLS, ERRA, PHANTOM HIGH, SAYDIE, YARDS, alongside tune from TRUE LEGENDS like THE AQUABATS, DOUG AND THE SLUGS, BLINK-182, BONNIE TYLER, EAZY-E, FUGEES, & PRIMUS. Gobs also drops a RARE and STRANGE VINYL that METAL and PENDULUM fans will appreciate. We end off with a beautiful moment that STRANGER THINGS fans will love.
IF YOU KNOW A PARAMEDIC help us show them the appreciation they deserve by SENDING THIS EPISODE TO THEM.

  • Midnight Looms 051 – ROBIN HATCH – May 18th 2021

It’s gonna take something really special to top last week’s 50th episode with Vancouver Retro Wave band, ACTORS, but we think we’ve done it. Tonight, we have our first IN-STUDIO PERFORMANCE in 7 months! By synth virtuoso ROBIN HATCH!! A classically trained pianist, Robin has toured with OUR LADY PEACE, DWAYNE GRETZKY, THE RURAL ALBERTA ADVANTAGE, and more. Her synth skills are highly sought after, but tonight we have her all to ourselves as she flexes her chops on 3 SYNTHESIZERS and a DRUM MACHINE, inside our PLAYDEAD CULT DIY concert space. We are so geeked for this!
In between songs, Robin chats with our host, GOBS, about her experiences with insane music teachers, stage fright, and a giant, room-sized synthesizer named TONTO. She also gives us a run down of her gear, so synth- junkies, DO NOT MISS THIS!
In honour of our guest and renaissance woman, Robin Hatch, we get mighty eclectic with the song selections. The ride begins with BRAND-NEW TUNES from the likes of  GARY NUMAN, RICH AUCOIN, SPARKS, WHITEHORSE, RAPHAEL WEINROTH-BROWNE, with even more new stuff later in the program from THE FLOWERS OF HELL and SMALLTOWN DJs collabing with the legend that is BOOTSY COLLINS. GOBS explores the musical FAMILY TREE that led to NYC psych-rockers, STEADY SUN, and rounds out the program with THE BRIDE (something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue). There’s plenty of sounds from the TRUE LEGENDS OF MUSIC thrown into the mix. DEVO, THE JAN HAMMER GROUP, OINGO BOINGO, RUSH, STEVIE WONDER, and a selection from the soundtrack of CULT CLASSIC, THE PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE.
What a ride indeed. Now how the hell are we gonna top this?!

  • Midnight Looms 048 – TEVA’S NIGHT – April 27 2021

Tonight, we spend a full 90 minutes paying tribute to our host’s real life hero, TEVA HARRISON, on the anniversary of her passing. Every song that you’re going to hear was suggested by someone who loved Teva and all of these songs remind them of her. Teva was an acclaimed author, poet, illustrator, and cancer activist. She was also a Riot Grrrl, a rave DJ, specializing in the BREAKCORE genre, and maybe most importantly, Teva was truly MAGIC. You can bet there’s gonna be lots of that magic in this very special tribute to an amazing person.
You’re gonna be surprised by how eclectic tonight’s selections get. THE BEATLES, THE CURE, THE SMITHS, APHEX TWIN, DAVID BOWIE, DOLLY PARTON, ELLE KING, HOLE, MINISTRY, NORAH JONES, and a bunch of Breakcore. We push the boundaries of what can happen in a radio show but every single song is perfect because they all describe a different aspect of a truly amazing person who profoundly impacted so many lives and continues to do so even though she is no longer with us. Now that is magic. That is Teva. This is her night!
Thank you to every single one of her friends and family members who made this episode happen. We have made something special together. Of course, we shouldn’t be surprised. Teva inspires greatness.
