Midnight Looms

Alright who’s already in full HALLOWEEN mode? Show of hands :P Tonight we bring you a DIRTY ROCK N ROLL PARTY because there’s just something so fitting about filthy INDIE ROCK and Halloween. And we’ve got the perfect band joining us to bring that Vibe.

BAD WAITRESS is one of Canada’s rowdiest PUNK bands. They’re a Toronto based, non-binary, 4 piece, and they are inside our PLAYDEAD CULT DIY concert space to perform some tunes from their brand new album, NO TASTE, and turn this episode into a full blown Halloween punk rock show.

Since everything Bad Waitress are performing is brand new, our host, GOBS, made it their goal to pack as much NEW MUSIC in as we could possibly fit. Expect fresh sounds from AMYL & THE SNIFFERS, THE BRONX, CAT CLYDE & JEREMIE ALBINO, DESCENDENTS, FUCKED UP, GOAT, IDLES, INDIGO DE SOUZA, MUTHERLOAD, NIGHTJACKET, RISE AGAINST, STATUS/NON-STATUS, WEDNESDAY, THE FOLLOW UPS covering DAVE ROCKET & THE JOBBERS, and this month’s SYN (SONG YOU NEED), by SATURNINE SIGHS. We even get to hear Gobs’ favourite tune by seminal RIOT GRRRL band, L7. WHAT A FREAKIN’ LINE UP!!! And a Bad Waitress concert on top of it all.

WE LOVE HALLOWEEN. It’s the only holiday that we dedicate a full month to and that month starts tonight! We’re back inside our PLAYDEAD CULT studio space after a week off, still digesting food from Thanksgiving dinner, and our host, GOBS, is joined by a buddy who happens to write comic books. DANNY GORNY is in the place. Gobs chats with him about his SCI-FI, FANTASY, and HORROR projects while we hear a selection of his favourite costume party jams. It’s the perfect way to kick off the Halloween season.

Danny throws down one wildly eccentric set of songs. DUSBTEP, HARDCORE, HIP HOP, INDUSTRIAL, CLASSIC ROCK. Seemingly tunes that don’t belong together, but then consider Danny’s work. He’s released comics about rats that kill people (HOUSE OF DOOM), and a secret agent who hunts monsters in colonial times (MYTH BUTCHER). He’s working on a sci-fi comic that he describes as “farm punk” (CYGNUS IMPERIUM), and he’s 4 issues deep into a 12 part series about a young woman who psychically projects herself as a superhero, called Radiant Dawn, while she’s sleeping (SLEEPWALKERS). Will our producer, Sophy, join in on a READ THROUGH of a MONSTER ATTACK scene from one of Danny’s comics? Tune in and find out!!

This journey begins with 2021 POLARIS PRIZE WINNERS, CADENCE WEAPON & BACKXWASH setting the mood for 30 mins a FRESH URBAN SOUNDS from HAVIAH MIGHTY, LOUD LUXURY ft. THUTMOSE, MACHINEDRUM ft. DENIRO FARRAR, 96 BACK, DJ NU-MARK & FULL CRATE, SHAD, and even a STONER JAM from on elf the best BEAT TAPES of the year, by DJ UNKNOWN.

Any JAMES BOND fans in the building?! Our late-night ride ends with a MEGAMIX of Bond themes, including the most recent, from BILLIE EILISH, followed by a quick exploration of Bond soundtracks SAMPLED in a couple absolute MASTERPIECES of ELECTRONIC MUSIC by PROPELLERHEADS and ACEN. We end off with a BRAND NEW REMIX from DANNY BYRD. Now that’s how you kick off halloween!!!

This is gonna be a big show. In fact BIG is the theme for tonight. We’re focused on 2 things. The official launch of our new PATREON page and our special guests. Toronto INDIE POP sensations, MONOWHALES, are inside our PLAYDEAD CULT DIY concert space for a chat and a PERFORMANCE.

The original 3 members of Monowhales met in college where they attended music programs. They’re not only trained musicians but avid studiers of music and they bring that expertise to their sound along with a mutual love for POWER POP, so what you’re about to hear is complex but also just so much fun. This band is known for their explosive energy and they’re about to give you a taste of what you’ll hear when they come through your town on tour with SAM ROBERTS BAND, beginning on November 13th in Winnipeg.

Our host, GOBS, does what he does best to get you pumped and ready for Monowhales with a set of NEW MUSIC from heavy hitters and local goodness. BLEACHERS, CHVRCHES & ROBERT SMITH, DAN MIRALDI, DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979, FAIRWTHR, MOTHER MOTHER, SATURNINE SIGHS, and ZEPHYRS all up in the mix.

Tonight, we end off another CRAZY 88 with help from Monowhales and their SONG WRITING HEROES. BRIGHT EYES, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, DOLLY PARTON, ELLIOT SMITH, JIMI HENDRIX, LED ZEPPELIN, THE WHITE STRIPES, and it all ends off with a RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS SING-A-LONG because when you play tunes this big, that’s just what tends to happen. Try to resist! Just try!!

Tonight, we’re gonna be opening up the REQUEST LINE and dropping this years SUMMER JAMS selected by YOU. And we’ve got a RAPPER coming through who’s just taking the game to the NEXT LEVEL. If you don’t know about CLAIRMONT THE SECOND, prepare to be blown away. Seriously!

Clairmont is a fiercely independent rapper who does it all. He not only PRODUCES, MIXES, and MASTERS his own tunes, runs his own label, and shoots his own music vids, but he does it all with a depth that few other MCs are on. Clairmont is AHEAD OF THE GAME. He’s outspoken about his FRUSTRATIONS WITH THE INDUSTRY and we think it’s so important that he’s willing to talk about it, so we’re gonna do a bit of that for sure. GOBS also chats with Clairmont about recent COLLABS, song LYRICS, and being related to a member of the OBGMs, plus we get an update on his long awaited NEXT ALBUM. All in between bumping a selection of recent releases from this amazing artist.

Clairmont sometimes gets compared to PRINCE, so Gobs sets this ride in motion with a CLASSIC from “The Purple One”. He follows it up with fresh URBAN vibes from EMANUEL, HAVIAH MIGHTY, SHAD, SYML & SAGUN, and this months SYN (Song You Need), by Montreal rapper, MILLA THYME.

For the final 3rd of the show, we say GOODBYE TO SUMMER with a full half hour of our listener’s FAVOURITE SUMMER JAMS. NEW MUSIC from KENDRA MORRIS and SAINT MOTEL, along-side big party vibes from DAVID GUETTA, GIRL IN RED, GLASS ANIMALS, KYLIE MINOGUE, SOFI TUKKER and MORE.

If you’re like us, you wanna do something to help out your community during these hard times, but money is tight. Well, tonight, we’re joined by a guy who was in the same boat so he started up an org that has grown into a huge thing. DAVE SHELLNUTT is better known as THE BIKING LAWYER. He’s a cycling enthusiast (if not fanatic), who created BIKE BRIGADE, a grass roots org that helps deliver food and aid to people in need. That’s a reason to be excited. Here’s another one. Dave picked out a bunch of tunes to go along with our chat but we decided to have no advanced notice on what those tunes were. He gave us a list when he arrived and we rolled with it. We love it when we have no agenda. Tonight, we fly by the seat of our pants!

This ride begins with a NEW MUSIC coming out of Europe, where acts are combining POST-PUNK with elements of JAZZ and EDM while that Post-Punk aesthetic is permitting every genre of music. Gobs serves up a fresh and diverse platter of killer tunes to showcase this movement that he’s calling “COLD ERA”. A CERTAIN RATIO, FOX ft. DLR & ALIX PEREZ, HIATUS KAIYOTE, KOJAQUE, THE LOUNGE SOCIETY, and  WHISPERING SONS all in the mix. Gobs squeezes in a scorcher of a classic, by SONIC YOUTH, before The Biking Lawyer takes over the selecting. WE ARE NOT WORTHY!

Our guest, Dave Shellnutt, bring a different vibe to the virtual decks. HIP HOP, REGGAE, SOUL, and a bit off fight music by RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. BOB MARLEY, ERYKAH BADU, MARVIN GAYE, 2PAC, and SZA blend together while Dave chats about the important work Bike Brigade has been doing.

In the final 3rd of the show, Gobs showcases some amazing tunes by INDIGENOUS ACTS. NEW MUSIC from AASIVA, ISKWE, and STATUS/NON-STATUS along with a CLASSIC by the legend, WILLIE DUNN. Then it’s time for our monthly VINYL. Gobs puts the needle on a RARITY from one of the greatest entertainers who ever lived. BIZ MARKIE on wax! The episode concludes with a SAMPLE CHAIN that features BILLY COBHAM, LO FIDELITY ALLSTARS, PIGEONHED, and the infamous DJ HELLFISH. What a wild ride! What an uplifting episode. It’s exactly what we all need on a week like this.

“COLD ERA”. Let’s make it happen!

We’re back after a week off and ready to blast into the “fall season”. We now have 60 episodes of this series under our belt. A lot of those episodes have GUESTS and even LIVE PERFORMANCES. BANDS, RAPPERS, DJs, PRODUCERS, CREATORS and ACTIVISTS have all graced our PLAYDEAD CULT studio space and it just so happens that exactly 22 of those guests make music. It was our amazing producer, Jane, who had the idea that we should do a FULL EPISODE OF MUSIC FROM OUR FORMER GUESTS. We play 22 tracks per show and when the math works out that perfectly, you gotta take it as a sign. All that and we haven’t even mentioned the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT yet.

We’re about to launch a PATREON page BUT we’re not using it the way you think we’re gonna use it. Check out the episode to get all the details from our host, GOBS. This Patreon could be a GAME CHANGER for PODCASTS and RADIO BROADCASTS, and if you sign up, you get access to all sorts of stuff!!

If you can get down to some URBAN music vibes, you’ve come to the right place. Tonight, inside our PLAYDEAD CULT DIY concert space, we’ve got our first HIP HOP performance happening. Reppin’ Scarborough, RAPPER, ICE THA ONE, is in the build and she’s brought along her PRODUCER, HEYBOMBAY. They just released a new album, called MONSTAR, and they’re gonna perform a set of songs from it for a small crew of our fam who are just dying for a show. This is gonna be too fun.

MONSTAR is an entire album of jams from a QUEER, FEMALE perspective, but that’s not what this album is all about. This is a feel good album. It’s a party album. And it’s a sexy album. Like, every tune on here is a certified panty dropper. Does anybody say panty dropper anymore? Our host, GOBS, asks Ice and Bombay.

This ride kicks off with NEW DRAKE, supported by tunes from local London heroes, HAVIAH MIGHTY, SHAD, and an EXCLUSIVE MASHUP featuring rapper, SUM-01. The ladies stay in control for the rest of the program. More fresh Hip Hop from ASHNIKKO & PRINCESS NOKIA, LADY LESHURR, and LEXA TERRESTRIAL. OLDSCHOOL vibes from MARY J BLIGE, SALT-N-PEPA, and a RARE MISSY ELLIOT REMIX by NICOLAS JAAR. Tonight we get to do something new. Our host, GOBS is gonna be chatting with a family member, who also happens to be a TIKTOK INFLUENCER with currently over 183k followers. But it’s not the numbers we care about. It’s what he has to say. MATT RAEKELBOOM is an ADHD LIFE COACH who’s just launched a WEBSITE that will be thee go-to place for people with ADHD who want to manage it as a gift instead of a curse. Matt demonstrates why he’s been referred to as “a life changing expert”. He’s brought along a play list of inspiring tunes. Some HIP HOP, EDM, and METAL. All inspiring, hard hitting tunes that are perfect for the ADHD mind.

After setting tonight’s ride in motion with a BEASTIE BOYS/TING TINGS MASHUP, Gobs compliments Matt’s selections with NEW MUSIC from ADIEAUX, AHEE, ESKIMO CALLBOY, RIVALS ft. ELIJAH WITT (CANE HILL), THE STRUMBELLAS, and this months SYN (Song You Need), by SUB POP DISCO-PUNK girl group, CHAI.

In the final third of the program, we hear some local goodness from CZECH HOTEL and SANDALS CA. Then Gobs drops a set of OUTSIDER MUSIC from some of the most infamously bizarre acts ever recorded. THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY, THE SHAGGS, WESLEY WILLIS, and even Canadian Icon WILLIAM SHATNER (high on peyote). Gobs ends this journey with a recent release by Alberta COLDWAVE SYNTH cult hero, OHAMA, which he argues should be part of the Outsider Music Canon. You gotta hear this stuff to believe it.

Tonight, we’ve got our first in-studio DJ set in 18 months. DJ ME TIME christened the space back in Feb of 2020, and then something weird happened to the world and we couldn’t do in-studio DJ sets for a while. Well, it’s finally time for them again, thanks to a wonderful little vaccine. Rechristening this space is an important task so we’ve employed a true veteran to do it. HIGH VOLTAGE is back on the program. We give him the second half-hour of the show to just flex on this really fancy lookin’ new DENON CONTROLLER that he’s brought along with him. You know our host, GOBS, is gonna get a proper demo from him after High Voltage drops a set of songs about freedom, celebrating our recent release from lockdown here in Ontario, Canada, where High Voltage is one of the most oldschool DJs in the game.

“You have to gain your experience through using the vinyl and through using the CDs, and entertaining a crowd, most of all. Learning what people like. This is just a toy on-top of that” - DJ High Voltage

This episode is one for the dance floor. Before High Voltage takes over, Gobs called up a TOP FAN of his favourite RETROWAVE band, ACTORS, and compliments their vibe with NEW MUSIC from BOOTBLACKS, COLD CONNECTION, PROVOKER, SOOK-YIN LEE, and ST. VINCENT.  Then he preps you for the DJ mix with FETISH PARTY TECH-HOUSE by FOOLIE and LSDXOXO.

This episode concludes in the most fun possible way. An infamous DMC BOOTLEG version of NEW ORDER’s BLUE MONDAY from our host’s own VINYL collection, then a SAMPLE CHAIN exploration that features sounds from BLACK BOX, THE BROTHERS JOHNSON, LL COOL J, and DJ ZINC. All before chilling things out to send you gently into the night with EXPERIMENTAL excellence from O’HAARA and WORMWOOD.

What a forkin’ ride!!!
