For tonight's episode of the Midnight Special On RTRFM, we will be interviewing musician and artist Chris Cobilis about composing the score for the new Australian film, 1%, written by Matt Nable and directed by Stephen McCallum.

Chris Cobilis is known in the Perth music scene for many different things. A member of The Tigers and their rock off-shoot Sabre Tooth Tigers, Cobilis has also played drums in SMRTS and Zerodent, played extensively solo, and recently released an album that Funniest Home Videos into an experimental score played by Spektral Quartet and narrated by Kenneth Goldsmith. That album, This Is You, you can find on Chris Cobilis bandcamp.

1% is a new Australian film that focuses on a bikie gang, the Copperheads. While their leader, Knock (Matt Nable) has been in prison, Paddo (Ryan Corr) has kept the club active and earning. When Knock is released and resumes being President, various things conspire to force Paddo into a confrontation with Knock including Paddo's Lady Macbeth styled girlfriend played by Abbey Lee. 1% was released into Australian cinemas this week, and for the Midnight Special, as well as my own interest in movie soundtracks, we were fortunate to get the chance to talk to Chris about scoring a film as well as hear his own personal favourite movie scores that have inspired and influenced him. On this episode of The Midnight Special, your host Ai-Ling debuts her new series ‘Musicians in Kitchens’ where she visits the home of a local musician and chats to them about food and music while they cook their favourite dish.

Her first guest is Adam Trainer.

Adam Trainer has been making music in Perth in various indie and experimental rock bands since the early to mid 2000s, including Radarmaker, Polaroid Ghost and The Ghost of 29 Megacycles. In 2010 he began a collaboration with Matt Rösner, which brought about the duo Gilded. In 2012, Adam began collaborating with former Radarmaker bandmate Warwick Hall and percussionist Michael Caratti under the name Original Past Life.

Adam Trainer is also a writer and researcher, and has contributed research to a Curtin University project investigating the history of popular music in Western Australia, as well as the development of a Western Australian new music archive at the State Library.

Adam was RTRFM's music director between 2010 and early 2014, and presents on Posted on Wednesday night’s from 7 to 9pm.

Adam cooks up his Vegetarian Spaghetti Bolognese and shares his cooking tips.

Ai-Ling and Adam discuss childhood memories growing up on the Kimberley and what he ate as a kid of the 80s.
