Midwestern State opens its 2024 campaign with a pair of matches at Stang Park. On Thursday Sept. 5, the Mustangs welcome Western Colorado for the season opener, and on Sunday Sept 8, Central Oklahoma visits MSU. The Mustangs finished last season with a 10-5-5 record and were unbeaten in eight of their final 10 matches, including a four-game winning streak before succumbing to Dallas Baptist in the LSC Postseason Tournament semifinals, 1-0. MSU is hoping to make even greater strides in the upcoming season, and head Ryan Spence explains how the Mustangs are approaching the game this season.

The MSU Mustangs launch their 2024 season with the Midwestern State Invitational on Thursday night. Stephanie Radecki begins her third season as the head coach, and the Mustangs face Adams State in their opening match at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. On Friday, MSU battles Southern Arkansas at 1 p.m. and tangles with Northwestern Oklahoma at 7 p.m. The Stang Gang caps a full day of matches on Saturday with a duel against Drury at 5 p.m. Radecki discusses the Mustangs’ depth and what she expects to see from the team at the start of the campaign during her first podcast of the 2024 season.

First-year head coach Rich Renner breaks down the Mustangs as they begin a new era and vie for the Lone Star Conference Championship.

Midwestern State pulled out an 18-11 victory over Missouri Southern at Memorial Stadium in Rich Renner’s debut as the Mustangs’ head coach. Devin Cross rushed for 101 yards on 11 carries, and Jalen March finished with 69 yards on 17 carries as the Stangs ran for 207 of their 256 yards of offense on opening night. The Mustangs held Missouri Southern to 241 yards of total offense. This week, MSU makes its first road trip of the season, and the Mustangs are tangling with Western Colorado, which finished last season with a 10-2 record. Renner says the Mountaineers are legitimate contenders for the national championship, and his team will be tested in its second game of the season.

Renner discusses the progress of the team through three weeks of camp and reveals his approach to the season with a new defensive coordinator and other new members of the coaching staff. The battle for the starting quarterback position is discussed as well as the kickers that will fill the shoes of Ritze Vaes. The season begins with a Thursday night tilt against Missouri Southern, and Renner provides fans a scouting report before kickoff at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29.

STANG GANG PODCAST with Babe Laufenberg (August 14, 2024)

 

This year’s Welcome Back Dinner features Babe Laufenberg as the guest speaker. Laufenberg had a nine-year career as a quarterback in professional football, including two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. Following his playing career, Laufenberg became a prominent sportscaster in Dallas-Fort Worth. He is entering his 28th season as the analyst on the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network.

 

This special Stang Gang Podcast is a preview of Laufenberg’s Welcome Back Dinner appearance at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Sunday Aug. 18. The event begins with a social gathering at 5:30 p.m. The dinner, catered by Ribs, Inc., follows at 6 p.m., with the program starting at approximately 6:45.

Midwestern State complete its most successful season in women’s tennis with a berth in the national semifinals at the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The Mustangs had some outstanding individual performances throughout the course of the season, and excelled as a team. The Mustangs earned two victories in the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships, including a dramatic win over Wingate on a steamy night in the quarterfinals. MSU also coasted to a 4-0 win over Queens College in the Round of 16. The bulk of the team is likely to return to Midwestern State next spring, so expectations will be high in 2025.

Midwestern State players and coaches are conducting soccer camps from May 28th-31st. Camps will be held on the football and soccer turf fields at Midwestern State University and also include water activities. Mini Camps are conducted for youngsters five and six-years-old. Half-Day Camps are held for kids from kindergarten to fifth grade. Full-Day Camps are available for older players through eighth grade.

Summer Camps get underway June 24 with a Basic Skills Camp (ages 6-11), and a Fundamental Camp (ages 9-14) are being staged through June 27 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. All campers will get a t-shirt and a camp basketball. The Basic Skill Camp is a half from 8 a.m. until noon, and the Fundamental Camp begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. There is also a College ID Camp for high school age girls on June 28 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Registration for Midwestern State Women’s Basketball Camps can be done on-line at www.midwesternstatewbbcamps.com 

Midwestern State coaches and players run the summer camps. The Mustangs are looking forward to an exciting season, and Jackson discusses a talented group of players that will be donning the Maroon and Gold next season as the Mustangs look to take the program to new heights.

Midwestern State head men's and women's tennis coach Scott Linn discusses the challenges his teams face week-in and week-out, and the on-court battles throughout the course of the season.

Midwestern State hosted South Central Regional dual matches at MSU Tennis Center this past week. The men’s team was narrowly defeated by UT Permian Basin, 4-3, but the women’s team advanced to the Round of 16 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida, with a 4-1 victory over Dallas Baptist. MSU earned straight-set wins in the first four singles' matches and returns to the Round of 16 for the first time since 2019.  Midwestern State will play its dual match on Monday, May 20. The Championship Final is slated for Friday, May 24.
