Midwestern State is still in the hunt for a berth in the LSC Postseason Tournament, but this will be an important week as the Mustangs hit the stretch run. With five games remaining, Midwestern State is tied for ninth with Arkansas-Fort Smith, and both teams are one game behind Cameron and Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Mustangs lost their only meeting with UAFS, 96-84, but defeated Cameron in the first of two encounters, 68-56. TAMUK visits the Mustangs on Feb. 22, and MSU travels to Cameron for the season finale on Feb. 29.  Midwestern State visits UT Permian Basin on Thursday for a rematch with the Falcons, who hit 18 3-pointers in a 90-62 victory in Wichita Falls last month. The Mustangs will also face Angelo State on Saturday. The Rambelles scored a 93-71 victory in their first meeting with MSU this season. 

Midwestern State is coming off two impressive performances, defeating Eastern New Mexico, 93-54, and knocking off Western New Mexico, 86-70, as Mason Gibson scored 20 points for the Mustangs. Midwestern State is in a three-way tie for ninth place in the Lone Star Conference, one game behind Texas A&M International for eighth place. The top eight teams qualify for the LSC Postseason Tournament. The Mustangs are tied with Oklahoma Christian and UT Permian Basin. This week the Mustangs travel to Odessa for a showdown with UTPB and a rematch with Angelo State, which suffered an overtime loss at D.L. Ligon Coliseum earlier this season.

Rich Renner and the coaching staff at Midwestern State have inked a signing class of potentially 40 players. There are 14 freshman on the offensive side of the ball and 26 freshman are signing on to play defense at MSU. There are 12 defensive linemen in the signing class with seven linebackers and seven wide receivers. Midwestern State finished last season with a 4-6 record and went 3-5 in the Lone Star Conference, but the Mustangs are optimistic that the roster has been bolstered for 2024. Midwestern State is off to a promising start in 2024. The Mustangs competed in the D2 First Pitch Invitational in Conroe, Texas, and earned their first win of the season defeating Central Washington, 4-1, and played No. 19-ranked Rogers State even, with the Hillcats winning in extra innings. Colorado Mesa and Regis earned one-run victories over the Mustangs, who played their home opener against East Central on Tuesday. The Mustangs showed their potential to the home fans with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap after the Tigers rallied in the seventh inning for a 4-2 victory in the opener. This weekend the Mustangs are playing five games at Wichita Falls Softball Complex as they host the Mustangs Round-Up. The Mustangs face Fort Hays State twice and also tangle with Northwestern Oklahoma, Northwest Missouri State and Southwestern Oklahoma. The action begins Friday at noon.

Midwestern State returns home following a four-game road trip and faces Eastern New Mexico, which has a three-game winning streak and is 10-4 in conference play, including a 108-91 victory over the Mustangs when the teams clashed in Portales on Jan. 13. Greg Johnson scored a career-high 39 points in the victory. Junior Hodnett hit five 3-pointers for the Greyhounds, propelling ENMU to 38 points down the stretch. That was the last time leading scorer Mason Gibson appeared in a game for the Mustangs, who have played without the sophomore guard from Allen, Texas, for the last six games. Gibson scored a career-high 31 points against the Greyhounds. His return is questionable for this weekend. ENMU will be at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday night for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. MSU will go for the season sweep against Western New Mexico on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Midwestern State returns home from a four-game road trip and hosts Eastern New Mexico on Thursday night. The Greyhounds won the first meeting in Portales, 65-61, but Zarria Carter scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Mustangs. Carter has 10 double-doubles this season, including two on the recent road trip. Western New Mexico visits Midwestern State on Saturday for the Ovarian Cancer Awareness Game. Midwestern State will honor the memory of former head coach Noel Johnson and teal ribbons will be given to fans as they enter D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs won their first meetings with WNMU, 73-61, as Carter scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.

Midwestern State pulled out a close victory on the road at Arkansas-Fort Smith on Thursday, but took an excruciating loss at Oklahoma Christian two days later. Pierre Sanders leaped to block Roland McCoy's potential game-winning 3-pointer in the closing seconds to preserve a 79-77 win over UAFS. Quinton Johnson II's 3-pointer from the top of the key with six seconds remaining lifted Oklahoma Christian to a 62-61 win at Payne Athletic Center on Saturday. The Mustangs fell to 12-7 overall and 6-7 in league play as they prepare for one of the most challenging road trips in the Lone Star Conference. Midwestern State will visit Lubbock Christian on Thursday and face No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas, on Saturday afternoon.

Midwestern State brought four-game losing streak to a halt with an exciting 76-74 victory over Oklahoma Christian on Saturday. Five players scored in double figures, led by Zarria Carter, who scored 21 points. Makayla Coy scored the game winning layup with 15 seconds remaining to secure the win for the Midwestern State and finished with her third double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Catalina Cortez narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and a season-high nine rebounds. She connected on two 3-pointers and has now recorded a triple in each of her last nine games. Kertisa Amos poured in 14 points, and Nikki Green added 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting off the bench for MSU. The Mustangs are on the road for two more games this week, visiting Lubbock Christian on Thursday night and West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon.

Midwestern State won a thrilling double-overtime game against Angelo State, 88-79, at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last week. Pierre Sanders scored 29 of his game-high 31 points after halftime as the Mustangs picked up their third win in four outings. Two days after the exciting victory over the Rams, MSU fell flat against UT Permian Basin. The Mustangs established an eight-point lead with 7:47 to play in the first half, but the Falcons outscored Midwestern State 16-7 to take a 34-33 halftime lead. In the second half, Midwestern State was 9 of 29 from the field and outscored by the Falcons over the final 20 minutes, 28-24. Leslie saw an “absolutely unacceptable level of competitive spirit” during the 62-57 loss. This week, Midwestern State faces two opponents from the LSC East Division a road trip to Arkansas-Fort Smith and Oklahoma Christian. Both teams present unique challenges for the Mustangs.
