The Midwestern State women’s basketball team is traveling to San Antonio and Austin this week to face St. Mary’s and St. Edward’s on Wednesday and Friday. The Mustangs opened conference play at home against No. 14-ranked Texas Woman’s and UT Tyler, which reached the Elite Eight last season. MSU held Ashley Ingram of the Pioneers to 10 points, but Leila Patel, Scout Huffman and Averee Klienhans all scored 19 en route to a 90-72 victory. Midwestern State started well against UT Tyler, but Martina Macholova and Ella Bradley led the Patriots to a 77-58 victory. Midwestern State visits St. Mary’s for the first time since 2017 on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., and the Mustangs lead the all-time series, 17-5. MSU will make its first appearance at St. Edward’s since November of 2010, and the Mustangs are 5-4 all-time when visiting the Hilltoppers. Friday’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m.

Midwestern State saw its six-game winning streak come to an end with an 87-65 loss to No. 10-ranked Dallas Baptist on Thursday night, but the Mustangs responded with a resounding 99-78 victory over UT Tyler on Saturday afternoon. Will Shepherd scored a career-high 20 points in the victory. Amaechi Chukwu was 9 of 10 in the two games combined at D.L. Ligon Coliseum and will be available for the rematch with St. Mary’s. The Mustangs defeated the Rattlers in overtime, 108-104, as the two teams clashed in a non-conference encounter. Chukwu and Reggie Hill were both sidelined for that meeting but they will be available in San Antonio on Wednesday night. Hill returned to the floor on Saturday and logged 12 minutes. Midwestern State is also visiting St. Edward’s for a Friday night battle in Austin on the upcoming road trip.

Midwestern State, the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, has an 18-match winning streak and has advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The top-seeded Mustangs are hosting two third-round matches on Friday at Stang Park and the quarterfinal match on Sunday. 

MSU is ready to battle fourth-seeded Colorado State-Pueblo in the first postseason meeting between the two schools. The match kicks off at 3 p.m. on Friday. The Mustangs have won their last six meetings with the Thunderwolves, including a 2-1 victory in their last encounter, when Hikaruhito Meike scored the game-winner in the 89th minute of the 2019 matchup at Rawlings Sports Complex in Pueblo. Midwestern State leads the all-time series 13-2-1 and boasts a 7-0-1 record against CSU-Pueblo on home soil. The two schools have never met later than Oct. 6.

No. 2-seed Cal State LA battles a familiar foe in the first match at noon on Friday. The Golden Eagles play No. 3-seed Cal Poly Pomona. The CCAA rivals clash for the third time this season. Cal State LA held up the trophy at the conference tournament after winning 4-3 in penalty kicks, following a 0-0 draw with the Broncos. The Golden Eagles won the regular season meeting, 1-0, at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona. Friday’s winners meet Sunday at 3 p.m. for a berth in the Final Four.

Midwestern State extended its winning streak to six games to start the season and wrapped up the non-conference schedule with a 95-78 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva, Oklahoma, on Saturday afternoon. Bakari LaStrap led the Mustangs with 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, and he hit all 10 of his free throws. MSU was 29 of 32 at the free-throw line and shot 49.2 percent from the field. The LSC campaign tips off Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum as sharp-shooting Dallas Baptist visits the Mustangs. The Patriots are ranked No. 10 in the nation, averaging 98.8 points per game this season and hitting 55 percent of their shots from the field.

The Midwestern State women’s basketball team is ready for a fresh start as the conference season begins on Thursday. The Mustangs face No. 14-ranked Texas Woman’s at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, and the tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The Pioneers are loaded with talent, including 6-2 Ashley Ingram from Bridgeport, Texas, who is averaging 19.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. In two previous appearances against the Mustangs, Ingram is averaging 23.5 points and 13.5 rebounds. MSU closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule in San Angelo, and battled No. 12-ranked Tampa, which brought out the best in Makayla Coy. The 5-11 senior scored 21 of her 33 points in the fourth quarter and also pulled down 13 rebounds in the 68-57 loss to the Spartans. Coy was 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. 

The Midwestern State women have crossed the border into Oklahoma for its two most recent games. The Mustangs established an early 18-point lead at Southeastern, but the Savage Storm went on a 22-0 run to overtake MSU and won the game 77-62. On Tuesday night, Oklahoma Baptist jumped out to a 23-13 lead in the first quarter and pulled away in the third quarter by scoring the first 13 points of the second half en route to an 85-59 victory. The Mustangs are spending Thanksgiving weekend in San Angelo to play in the Rambelles Classic. MSU will face Tampa and Missouri Southern on Friday and Saturday. Both games tipoff at 3 p.m.

Midwestern State has opened the season with a 5-0 record, including two overtime victories during a five-game homestand. The 108-104 overtime victory against St. Mary’s was a memorable game as Austin Lewis hit all six of his 3-point shots and converted a four-point play to force overtime. Pierre Sanders recorded the first triple-double at MSU in 22 years. Sanders finished with 14 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds in the victory. After defeating Sterling, 92-70, the Mustangs are a traveling to Alva, Oklahoma on Saturday to face Northwestern Oklahoma State, which is 2-2 following a 78-62 win over Oklahoma City. Tipoff is at 3 p.m.

Midwestern State, the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, has a 17-match winning streak after winning a third straight Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament title with a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma Christian in the semifinals and an impressive 5-0 win over Dallas Baptist to reclaim the trophy after going through the LSC season undefeated. The Mustangs are the only team from the LSC that received a bid to the national tournament and are hosting Fort Lewis and UC Colorado Springs this weekend. The two RMAC schools will meet at Stang Park for the third time this season on Friday at 3 p.m., and the winner faces MSU on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. MSU has a +49 goal differential and is outscoring opponents at home, 26-2.

Midwestern State opened the season with a pair of home victories, defeating Colorado State-Pueblo in double overtime, 80-74, before dismantling UC Colorado Springs, 93-75, at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Mason Gibson emerged as the leading scorer with 21 points per game, and he is one of five players averaging double figures for the Mustangs. Duncan Alevok blocked eight shots in two games, and he grabbed 14 rebounds in 48 minutes of playing time. Reggie Hill displayed tremendous athleticism while grabbing 16 rebounds over the first two games. The Mustangs have two games coming up this week. First, MSU hosts Dallas Christian on Thursday night at 7:30, and then the St. Mary’s Rattlers visit D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
