Midwestern State embarks on a four-game road trip following losses to Angelo State and UT Permian Basin at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last week. Nikki Green poured in a season-high 23 points, and junior forward Zarria Carter posted her eighth double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds, but Angelo State shot 57.6 percent from the field and had four players score in double figures on its way to a 93-71 victory. Two days later, Kertisa Amos notched her second double-double of the season, finishing with a team-high 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting while going 7-of-11 from the charity stripe. She also matched a campaign best with 10 rebounds, but UT Permian Basin buried 18 3-pointers on its way to a 90-62 triumph. This week the Mustangs visit Arkansas-Fort Smith and Oklahoma Christian as they continue their quest to reach the LSC Postseason Tournament.

Midwestern State made its annual trek to New Mexico and split a pair of games last week. The Mustangs opened the road trip in Silver City with a 90-77 victory over Western New Mexico as Mason Gibson scored 22 points, hitting all 10 of his free throws, and Amaechi Chukwu pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds. Pierre Sanders scored in double figures for the 10th time this season, going for 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. MSU then traveled to Portales, and Greg Johnson scored a career-high 39 points to lead Eastern New Mexico to a 108-91 victory. MSU held a 71-70 lead with 8:51 to play, but ENMU outscored the Mustangs 38-20 from that point en route to victory. Midwestern State is 4-5 in conference play and currently ninth in the LSC standings. This week, Angelo State and UT Permian Basin visit D.L. Ligon Coliseum for pivotal battles in the LSC Western Division. The Rams are 7-2 in conference play, and the Falcons are 5-4.

Midwestern State returns from New Mexico with a 4-5 conference record and is currently eighth in the conference standings. MSU opened up its road trip with a 73-61 victory at Western New Mexico. Zarria Carter scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for her fifth consecutive double-double and seventh of the season. On Saturday, Carter scored 14 of her 27 points in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs rally fell short at Eastern New Mexico. The Greyhounds pulled out a 65-61 victory, and Carter fell a rebound shy of a double-double in Portales. Eastern New Mexico connected on 7-of-8 free throws in the final 52 second of the game and forced a key turnover before surviving two 3-point attempts by Catalina Cortez and another by Nikki Green. This week, Angelo State and UT Permian Basin are visiting MSU before the Mustangs embark on a four-game road trip.

Midwestern State posted a 75-55 victory over West Texas A&M on Thursday night as Kertisa Amos finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Makayla Coy (19 points, 13 rebounds) and Zarria Carter (13 points, 11 rebounds) added double-doubles in the “signature” win for the Mustangs. On Saturday, Lubbock Christian raced out to a 27-12 lead by hitting 11 of 12 shots in the first quarter, but MSU rallied to force overtime against the Lady Chaps, who prevailed, 68-61. The loss ended a three-game winning streak but provided more reason for Mustang fans to be excited about what the future holds for the women’s basketball team. The immediate future includes a trip to Western New Mexico and a clash with Eastern New Mexico before the Mustangs return home.

Midwestern State ended a three-game slide with an impressive 83-69 victory over Lubbock Christian at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. The Chaparrals saw a seven-game winning streak come to an end and suffered their first loss in six conference matchups. Midwestern State connected on 20-of-31 shots (64.5 percent) in the second half and hit eight of its final 10 field goal attempts to close out the game. Lubbock Christian entered the game shooting 43.7 percent from 3-point range but only shot 29.6 percent against the Mustangs. MSU is traveling to the “Land of Enchantment” this week for a pair of pivotal games against Western New Mexico and Eastern New Mexico.

Midwestern State is 8-3 through its first 11 games of the season but closed out 2023 on a sour note as St. Edward’s and Cameron handed the Mustangs back-to-back defeats. MSU is 2-3 in the tough West Division of the Lone Star Conference, where Angelo State, West Texas A&M, Eastern New Mexico and Lubbock Christian are all undefeated in conference play. Cameron improved to 4-1 with its 88-87 win over the Mustangs at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. When MSU returns to action on Jan. 4, West Texas A&M will be visiting the Mustangs. Two days later, Lubbock Christian will be under the dome. 

Midwestern State has posted back-to-back victories after defeating Cameron at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, 68-56, in their final game of 2023. Nikki Green hit five 3-pointers en route to a 20-point performance, and the Mustangs were 10-of-18 from long range as a team. Eternity Jackson and Catalina Cortez were both 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, and Kyla Speights added a 3-pointer. The Mustangs led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter and never trailed for the remainder of the game. Zarria Carter recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Mustangs return to action on Jan. 4, when West Texas A&M visits D.L. Ligon Coliseum at 5:30 p.m.

A special edition of the Stang Gang Podcast familiarizes fans with new head football coach, Rich Renner, who replaces Bill Maskill. Renner spent the last 18 years as a leader on the Midwestern State coaching staff.

Bill Maskill announced his retirement after 22 seasons as the head coach at Midwestern State, where he won 160 games and was named LSC Coach of the Year six times.  Rich Renner, who has been the defensive coordinator since 2008, was promoted to the head coaching position. Under Renner's guidance, the MSU defense has consistently ranked among the best in the Lone Star Conference. The Mustangs boasted the league's top defense in 2013 and 2015. The defense allowed the second fewest yards of Renner's tenure as the leader of the unit this season by yielding 315.5 yards per game. Renner helped guide the Mustangs to eight NCAA Division II postseason showings, a bowl appearance, and five Lone Star Conference titles since joining Maskill's staff in 2006.

Midwestern State scored an impressive victory at St. Mary’s to open its road trip last week. Will Shepherd, Pierre Sanders, Mason Gibson and Bakari LaStrap led the Mustangs to an impressive 83-76 victory at Bill Greehey Arena, where the Rattlers took a 20-8 lead in the opening six minutes. Two nights later, St. Edward's rode a hot start in the second half to an 85-71 win over Midwestern State. Midwestern State fell to 0-2 when shooting lower than 40 percent from the field as a team. The Mustangs connected on 26-of-68 shots (38.2 percent). The Mustangs have won all eight games when they shoot 40 percent or better.

The Midwestern State women’s basketball team earned its first victory of the season with a 66-64 triumph at St. Edward’s on Friday night as Zarria Carter beat the buzzer with a layup following an offensive rebound. Carter led the Mustangs with 20 points and grabbed 21 rebounds to go along with four steals. The junior from Mansfield, Texas, has been named the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week. She also had 33 points and nine rebounds in the heartbreaking loss at St. Mary’s. MSU saw an 18-point lead disappear in the second half and fell to the Rattlers, 70-67.
