Midwestern State played one of its best matches of the year in a 3-0 win over Eastern New Mexico as the Mustangs hit .400 in the first two sets. MSU traveled to Canyon two days later to face the defending national champions on “paint the floor pink” night. The Mustangs got a chance to experience one of the most electric atmospheres in Division II volleyball. Midwestern State renewed the Red River Rivalry at Cameron, but the Aggies took advantage of a sub-par performance from Midwestern State, which returns home to host Dallas Baptist at 6 p.m. on Friday. UT Tyler visits MSU on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. match.

Midwestern State held the highest-scoring team in the nation to 21 points last week, but UTPB was able to defeat the Mustangs, 21-13, at Memorial Stadium after scoring touchdowns on their first two drives of the game. This week MSU will try to slow down Central Washington, which is 4-0 in conference play and makes its first-ever visit to Wichita Falls. The Wildcats lead the all-time series, 2-0, but the two previous meetings have been in Ellensburg, Washington. The game will feature three of the top four leading rushers in the Lone Star Conference. Jalen March and Devin Cross of Midwestern State, and Tyler Flanagan of Central Washington. Flanagan leads the LSC with 95 yards per game.

Midwestern State wraps up a four-match homestand on Wednesday as Eastern New Mexico visits D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The two teams met earlier this season, and the Greyhounds scored a 3-1 victory in the LSC Crossover event in Portales. ENMU was in Wichita Falls earlier this year for the MSU Invitational and went 1-3, losing two five-set matches. The Mustangs also visit the defending national champions this week as they face West Texas A&M at “The Box” in Canyon, Texas, on Friday. On Saturday, Midwestern State will be in Lawton, Oklahoma, to renew the Red River Rivalry with Cameron.

Midwestern State was idle last week after defeating Eastern New Mexico, 34-31, when Ritse Vaes hit a 54-yard field goal in the waning seconds. The Mustangs have had two weeks to prepare UT Permian Basin, which is coming off its first-ever win over a ranked opponent. Last week, the Falcons defeated No. 16-ranked Texas A&M Kingsville, 29-17. UTPB is the highest-scoring team in the Lone Star Conference with 55.8 points per game and is third in the league, allowing opponents to score just 19.8 points per game. Midwestern State leads the all-time series, 6-1, but the Mustangs know they will be tested Saturday night at 7 p.m., when the two teams meet at Memorial Stadium.

Sophomore Ella Pando paced Midwestern State to a strong fifth-place finish at the 86th Annual Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree. This week, the Mustangs are running in the DBU Old Glory Gallop at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie, and a group of Mustangs are headed to Eastern New Mexico for the Greyhound Invitational. Midwestern State closed out the non-conference portion of its scheduled and moved up to No. 2 in the national rankings with an 8-0-1 record. Meachum says the intensity ratchets up to a new level with the start of conference play. MSU is visiting Dallas Baptist on Wednesday and hosts Oklahoma Christian just a week after beating the Eagles, 3-1, in the final non-conference match. The Mustangs have an impressive +19 goal differential and have out shot their opponents 127-65 through the first nine matches of the season. MSU faces Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at Stang Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Head coach Ryan Spence saw some tactical changes pay off last week with a 5-0 victory over Eastern New Mexico. Spence was pleased with what he saw in the victory but also thought the changes worked well in a 2-1 loss at St. Mary’s on Saturday — despite the result. Joining Spence on this week’s podcast is assistant coach Len Smith, who helped the Mustangs win 35 matches during his three-seasons as a player. Midwestern State advanced to the NCAA Division II region finals in 2013 and to the semifinal round in 2014. Smith spent the 2022 season as an assistant coach at Spring Hill College, working alongside head coach Chris Leonardi with the men's team in Mobile, Alabama. The Mustangs host the St. Edward’s this weekend at noon on Saturday.

Midwestern State opened a four-match homestand this past weekend against UT Permian Basin and Angelo State. The homestand continues on Wednesday night with a match against Lubbock Christian, which has lost five of its last seven matches since starting the season with a seven-match winning streak. A group of freshmen and sophomores continue to show promise, and Radecki is optimistic that better results are coming for the Mustangs, who will close out the homestand against Eastern New Mexico on Oct. 11 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. This week, MSU hosts the Lady Chaps. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
