STORYLINE:

Nine contractors working for the Cauca provincial government in southwestern Colombia were released on Friday after eight days in captivity at the hands of a dissident group of the now-defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia guerrilla group (FARC), according to the state Ombudsman's Office.

The hostages arrived on Friday morning by boat on a river in Cauca, guarded by armed men wearing camouflage uniforms with armbands bearing the name ‘Columna Alex Guerrero’ shortly before being released, according to The Associated Press, which corroborated the information on site.

Feeling that they were close to regaining their freedom, some of the contractors hugged each other and cried with emotion.

‘Mum, don't cry. We're waiting for the Red Cross to come,’ said one of the freed women when the armed men allowed her to call her family.

The contractors, including seven women, were kidnapped on 17 July near the municipality of López de Micay, Cauca. The governor's office said they were carrying out a ‘humanitarian and social mission’ to bring government services to the communities.

A spokesperson for the dissidents who spoke after the release told the press that they were detained for allegedly being involved in providing technical support to the army and police, although he assured that they were treated properly and were in good health. The man, dressed in military uniform, did not identify himself.

Alias ‘Iván Mordisco’ is the main leader of one of the dissident factions of the FARC that did not sign the peace agreement signed in 2016 between the guerrilla group and the state.

STORYLINE:

Crowds of chanting well-wishers gathered in the street on Friday to welcome the return of a Lebanese pro-Palestinian militant following his release after more than 40 years in detention in France.

Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, 74, was serving a life sentence for complicity in the murders of two diplomats, one American and one Israeli, in Paris in 1982.

The Paris Court of Appeal ruled last week that Abdallah, who has been imprisoned in France since his arrest in 1984, could be released on the condition that he leave the country and never return.

Abdallah was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987 for complicity in the assassinations of U.S. Army Lt. Col. Charles Ray, who was stationed in Paris as an assistant military attaché, and Israeli diplomat Yacov Barsimantov.

He became eligible for parole in 1999 but multiple requests he filed since then were denied.

The U.S. Embassy in Paris posted a photo on X of staffers standing, heads bowed in remembrance, around a memorial plaque at the mission for Ray.

“The United States opposes the release of convicted terrorist Georges Ibrahim Abdallah,” the post said.

“His release not only endangers the safety of U.S. diplomats abroad, but also betrays the memory of the victims and their families.”

“There was countless numbers of martyrs at the National Hospital, bodies were laying everywhere, some were torn apart. Some of our medical staff were trapped inside the hospital for hours, among the bodies. We came to their rescue and were able to help pick up the bodies, we were also able to help families identify bodies of their loved ones, we helped as much as we could.”

Manal Harb’s 19-year-old son went to volunteer at the Sweida hospital, when sectarian clashes erupted in the Syrian city.

The facility was overwhelmed and the medical staff could use all the help they could get.

But his volunteer visit ended with him being admitted himself.

“He got shot in front of the hospital. He got shot in the elbow, it shattered his bones,” Harb says, standing next to her son Safi Dargham in a hospital bed.

Clashes broke out last week that were sparked by tit-for-tat kidnappings between armed Bedouin clans and fighters with the Druze religious minority.

The violence killed hundreds of people and threatened to unravel Syria’s fragile postwar transition.

Syrian government forces intervened to end the fighting, but effectively sided with the clans.

“What I want to know is what was Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) doing trying to break up clashes between clans here? Nothing was happening here, what clashes did they want to break up?” says 60-year-old Bashar Amer, who was injured when a drone hit the road he was on with his family.

Disturbing videos and reports soon surfaced of Druze civilians being humiliated and executed, sometimes accompanied by sectarian slurs.

En mayor número que nunca, niños consumidos por el hambre están abarrotando el hospital Amigos del Paciente, el principal centro de emergencia para niños desnutridos en el norte de Gaza.

 

Una doctora dijo que cada día, llegan de 200 a 300 padres que traen a niños escuálidos.

El fin de semana pasado, cinco niños murieron. Esos fallecimientos son los primeros que se ven en el centro de niños que no tenían problemas de salud preexistentes. 

Los tratamientos básicos para la desnutrición que podrían haberlos salvado se habían agotado debido al bloqueo de Israel.

"Debido al hambre, el niño no puede llorar ni expresarse. Debido a la debilidad, no tiene energía”, dijo esta doctora. “Esos niños de cuatro o cinco años no pueden gatear ni caminar. Todo esto debido a la desnutrición. Estos síntomas están empeorando”.

 

 En las últimas tres semanas, al menos 48 personas murieron por causas relacionadas con la desnutrición, 28 adultos y 20 niños, informó el jueves el Ministerio de Salud de Gaza. Esto es un aumento en relación a los 10 niños que fallecieron en los cinco meses anteriores de 2025, según el ministerio.

 

En el campo de refugiados de Shati, Naima, la madre de Yazan Abu Ful, de dos años, mostró su cuerpo demacrado. 

 

El padre del pequeño dijo que lo llevaron al hospital varias veces y que los médicos solo dicen que deberían alimentarlo.

Israel —que en los últimos dos meses comenzó a dejar entrar suministros a cuentagotas— ha culpado a Hamás de interrumpir la distribución de alimentos. La ONU niega que Hamás desvíe cantidades significativas de ayuda y dice que el gobierno israelí, tiene que permitir que entre libremente.

 Estados Unidos volvió a prohibir el ingreso de las exportaciones de ganado mexicano este mes por temor a la propagación de un parásito que devora carne. 

 

En el estado de Chiapas, en el sur de México la rápida propagación de la mosca del gusano barrenador parece haber tomado por sorpresa a la mayoría de los ganaderos, a pesar de los recuerdos de brotes anteriores en las décadas de 1980 y 1990.

“Hay muchos que estamos curando con gasolina, gasolina es lo más práctico pues, que tiene uno en el campo la gasolina, pero nos están recomendando que no les pongamos gasolina porque estamos afectando al animal también”.

 

México está construyendo una planta con apoyo de Estados Unidos en Chiapas para producir moscas estériles, que han demostrado ser efectivas para detener la propagación, pero eso no estará listo sino hasta el próximo año.

Estados Unidos había comenzado gradualmente a reabrir la frontera a las importaciones de ganado este mes después de una suspensión en mayo, cuando el gobierno estadounidense anunció que la cerraría de nuevo tras hallar a un animal infectado en el estado de Veracruz.

 

Los funcionarios estadounidenses temen que si la mosca llega a Texas, sus larvas podrían causar grandes pérdidas económicas, algo que ocurrió hace décadas.

 

A pesar de que el ganado en esta región se destina al consumo doméstico en lugar de ser exportado a Estados Unidos, la presencia del gusano barrenador en México ha congelado las exportaciones de ganado a Estados Unidos a nivel nacional.

The Justice Department's No. 2 official met Thursday with Ghislaine Maxwell, the imprisoned former girlfriend of financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The meeting in Florida, which Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said he worked to arrange, is part of an ongoing Justice Department effort to cast itself as transparent following fierce backlash from parts of President Donald Trump’s base over an earlier refusal to release additional records in the Epstein investigation.

“Ms. Maxwell answered every single question. She never stopped, she never invoked a privilege, she never declined to answer.
