STORYLINE:

Mourners attended a funeral on Friday for five people killed in an Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced people in Gaza City.

According to Shifa Hospital, one child and four men were killed when the strike hit the school.

A family member, Taraji Edwan, who was displaced from northern Gaza and had also been taking refuge in the school, urged both Hamas and Israel to end the war.

“We don’t want food, we don’t want water, stop the war, reach a truce. Our children are dying—dying of hunger, thirst, lack of food, bombing, destruction, and fear,” Edwan said.

“Enough, enough. Enough Hamas, enough Israel, enough world, enough,” she added as she attended the funeral.

At least 22 people have been killed since Thursday night, according to hospital records at Nasser Hospital where the bodies arrived.

Some were killed in strikes, and others were killed while seeking aid, the hospital said.

It comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday his government was considering “alternative options” to ceasefire talks with Hamas after Israel and the U.S. recalled their negotiating teams, throwing the future of the negotiations into further uncertainty.

Netanyahu's statement came as a Hamas official said negotiations were expected to resume next week and portrayed the recall of the Israeli and American delegations as a pressure tactic.

STORYLINE:

Temperatures in parts of Romania climbed above 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) on Friday, pushing Bucharest residents to seek out the shade in local parks and the national meteorological agency to issue extreme heat warnings.

Street thermometers at a busy intersection in downtown Bucharest were reading up to 49 Celsius (120).

People were sunbathing in bathing suits along the shore of a lake in the Romanian capital, keen to cool off with a beer or a juice.

While meteorologists have issued a code red heat warning, they have also warned that storms might occur in the following days in the northern half of the country.

STORYLINE:

Thousands of terrified villagers in Cambodia have fled their homes to escape border fighting, that erupted Thursday, but not everyone can afford to go.

Neam Mom, 53, is one of the last grocery sellers still in the city of Samrong, the provincial capital of Oddar Meanchey and now one of the epicenters of the ongoing Thailand-Cambodia clash. If she packss up, she faces potential financial ruin.

“Most of the people in this town are already evacuated so no one is going to buy the stuff I just got,” said Neam Mom from a hammock surrounded by bushels of bananas, piles of dragon fruit and hanging lines of rambutans.

“If I am going to evacuate, my stuff is gonna be here and I will end up owing people even more.”

So far, the conflict has left at least 14 people dead and both countries are bolstering their military presence at the border.

Just days before evacuations began, Mom took out a loan of 8 million riels, about $2,000 USD, to stock up on supplies for her customers, who have now all fled.

“I don’t know how I am going to sell all this fruit here so that I can evacuate just like everyone else,” Mom said.

While long disputed, Mom said she has never seen the border conflict between the two Southeast Asian nations escalate to this scale.

“The dispute between the Khmers and the Thais doesn’t look like it is going to end anytime soon,” said Neam Mom, who was born-and-raised in Oddar Meanchey, one of the Cambodian provinces sharing the country’s roughly 800-kilometer border with Thailand.

As gun bursts from Cambodian forces tried to bring down an aircraft, Neam Mom said “We are always fighting with each other and I don’t think it is going to end anytime soon.”

Ada lake is very popular with senior citizens on hot and humid summer days.

People were seen swimming in the water, sunbathing on the shore and jet skiing.

Ongoing heatwaves in Europe have led to wildfires in Cyprus and Turkey.

Scientists warn that climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of heat and dryness in parts of Europe, making the region more vulnerable to health impacts.

STORYLINE:

British actor Micheal Ward has been charged with rape and sexual assault, police said Friday.

The Metropolitan Police force said the 27-year-old faces two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault. The charges relate to one woman and the offenses reportedly took place in January 2023.

The Crown Prosecution Service said it authorized the charges “having carefully reviewed a file of evidence.”

Ward is due to appear at London’s Thames Magistrates’ Court on Aug. 28.

Ward has appeared in films including “Blue Story,” “The Book of Clarence” and the recently released American political satire “Eddington.”

In 2020 he won the Rising Star award at the British Academy Film Awards, or BAFTAs. He was nominated for an acting BAFTA for Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light” and for a BAFTA television award for the Steve McQueen-directed series “Small Axe.”
