A few hundred protesters gathered in Jaffa, central Israel, on Friday, to call for the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza and to demand an end to the war there.

Ceasefire talks between Hamas and Israel are expected to resume next week as the war in Gaza nears it’s 22nd month and experts warn Palestinians are on the brink of famine.

Hamas official Bassem Naim said on Friday that he was told an Israeli delegation would depart for consultations early next week.

His comments come a day after the United States recalled its negotiating team from Qatar and after President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff said Hamas’ latest response to the negotiations showed a “lack of desire” to reach a truce.

The sides have held weeks of talks in Qatar reporting small signs of progress but no major breakthroughs.

In recent days more than two dozen Western-aligned countries and more than 100 charity and human rights groups have called for an end to the war, harshly criticizing Israel’s blockade and a new aid delivery model it has rolled out.

The charities and rights groups said even their own staff were struggling to get enough food.

Vladimir Putin's spokesperson said Friday the chance of a meeting between the Russian leader and his Ukrainian counterpart was "impossible" in the short term.

Dmitry Peskov said the Kremlin will not agree to top-level talks before a potential comprehensive peace agreement is fleshed out.

“A high-level meeting can and must put a final point in the settlement and seal the modalities and agreements that are yet to be worked out by experts," said Peskov.

He added that it's unlikely those agreements could be reached before the end of August, given that the approaches of Moscow and Kyiv are "diametrically opposite" and "can hardly be reconciled quickly."

China on Friday reaffirmed its support for the two-state solution after President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will recognize Palestine as a state at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

The mostly symbolic move puts added diplomatic pressure on Israel as the war and humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip rage.

France is now the biggest Western power to recognize Palestine, and the move could pave the way for other countries to do the same.

More than 140 countries recognize a Palestinian state, including more than a dozen in Europe.

China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun spoke about the announcement at a daily news briefing in Beijing.

“China supports the high-level meeting on implementing the two-state solution to be held at the United Nations and will continue to work with the international community to promote the ceasefire in Gaza,” said Guo.

Thursday’s announcement came soon after the U.S. cut short Gaza ceasefire talks in Qatar, saying Hamas wasn’t showing good faith.

Guo added that China “closely follows” the situation in Gaza when asked about the deteriorating humanitarian situation there.

Asked about the U.S. Commerce Secretary warning that TikTok would have to shut down its operation in the U.S. if China does not approve a deal for the sale of the app, Guo only said the country has made clear its stance.

Guo also refused to confirm whether this would be discussed during the trade talks between the two sides scheduled for next week in Stockholm.

Palestinians in the West Bank welcomed on Friday French President Emmanuel Macron's decision to recognize the State of Palestine.

"We thank France for this step," said Omar Awadallah, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs.

"France is fulfilling its moral and legal and diplomatic responsibility toward the state of Palestine," he added.

Macron announced Thursday that France will recognize Palestine as a state, in a bold diplomatic move amid snowballing global anger over people starving in Gaza.

Israel denounced the decision.

Macron said in a post on X that he will formalize the decision at the U.N. General Assembly in September. “The urgent thing today is that the war in Gaza stops and the civilian population is saved,'' he wrote.

The meeting reached some important consensus. For example, both sides highly value China-EU relations, agreeing to uphold and deepen their partnership, maintain strategic communication, enhance mutual understanding and trust, and work toward a brighter and more promising next 50 years for China-EU relations.

Both sides agreed to maintain open cooperation, expand trade and investment ties, and achieve more positive outcomes in their collaboration. They also expressed commitment to properly resolving trade frictions and differences through dialogue and consultation, opposing decoupling and blockage of supply chains.

Additionally, both sides agreed to jointly uphold post-war international rules and order, support multilateralism and free trade, advocate for the peaceful resolution of international disputes through political means, jointly tackle global challenges, and make new contributions to world peace and development.

The two sides issued the China-EU Leaders’ joint statement on climate change, emphasizing that the green partnership is a crucial part of China-EU relations and demonstrating their shared will and joint action to address climate change, achieve green development, and ensure the success of the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP29).

The two sides also agreed to establish an upgraded export control dialogue mechanism to facilitate timely communication on issues of mutual concern and jointly maintain the stability and smooth flow of China-EU industrial and supply chains.

Like any bilateral relationship, China and the EU do have some differences. Regarding the EU’s concerns on economic and trade issues, China has comprehensively, patiently, thoroughly, and meticulously stated its position in a friendly, respectful, and candid manner. China emphasized that the essence of China-EU economic and trade relations is complementary advantages and mutual benefit, which can and should achieve dynamic balance through development. China is committed to sustainable and balanced trade growth with the EU and is willing to import more high-quality European products that meet market demand. The EU, in turn, should relax restrictions on high-tech exports to China.

China stressed that whether there is overcapacity should be assessed globally and determined by the market.
