STORYLINE:

Fans of the mustachioed, headscarf-wearing icon, Hulk Hogan, reacted with sadness on Thursday following his death at the age of 71.

The bicep-busting icon of professional wrestling who turned the sport into a massive business and stretched his influence into TV, pop culture and conservative politics, was pronounced dead at a hospital less than 90 minutes after medics in Clearwater arrived at his home to answer a morning call about a cardiac arrest, police said.

“There were no signs of foul play or suspicious activity,” Maj. Nate Burnside told reporters.

Hogan's real name was Terry Bollea, and he was perhaps the biggest star in WWE’s long history.

He was the main draw for the first WrestleMania in 1985 and was a fixture for years, facing everyone from Andre the Giant and Randy Savage to The Rock and even company chairman Vince McMahon.

Hogan was also a celebrity outside the wrestling world, appearing in movies and TV shows, including a reality show on VH1, “Hogan Knows Best.”

Hogan died Thursday in Florida at age 71.

STORYLINE:

Archaeologists believe they have found one of the oldest burial sites in the world at a cave in Israel, where the well-preserved remains of early humans dating back some 100,000 years were carefully arranged in pits.

The findings at Tinshemet Cave in central Israel, published in an academic journal earlier this year, build on previous discoveries in northern Israel and add to a growing understanding of the origins of human burial.

Of particular interest to archaeologists are objects found beside the remains that may have been used during ceremonies to honor the dead and could shed light on how our ancient ancestors thought about spirituality and the afterlife.

Archaeologists working at Tinshemet since 2016 have discovered the remains of five early humans that date back to around 110,000 to 100,000 years ago, according to various technologies.

The skeletons were discovered in pits and carefully arranged in a fetal position, which is known as a burial position, said Yossi Zaidner, one of the directors of the Tinshemet excavation and a professor of archaeology at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

An elephant seal was found resting on a beach in Maricá, a coastal city near Rio de Janeiro, on Wednesday, drawing the attention of curious onlookers and prompting monitoring by marine experts.

The animal was first seen lying motionless on the sand in the early morning and remained on the beach throughout the day, occasionally moving but showing no signs of distress.

"He is in a resting state. We can see there that he doesn't have any health problems. He's just really resting before continuing his journey,” said Suellem Santiago, a field coordinator at a beach monitoring project, who was making sure the animal was not disturbed by people.

Elephant seals are occasionally spotted along Brazil’s southeastern coast during the winter months, as young individuals migrate north from sub-Antarctic regions to rest and undergo molting, a natural process where they shed and renew their fur and skin, requiring them to remain out of the water for extended periods.

"When we started to wash the skull we noticed that she had a large deposit of new bone, you see this deposit of very circular new bone inside her skull and also a kind of lesion on top of her skull. It's unlikely that individuals living in such a small area of Cookham would have all had these really aggressive cancers and they are very extreme and they would have been very visible and so our hypothesis is that these people were coming from a wider area and were coming to Cookham."

STORYLINE:

With Mexican cattle again barred this month from entry to the United States over fears of spreading a flesh-eating parasite, ranchers and veterinarians in southern Mexico, hundreds of miles from the border, are fighting what has U.S. agricultural authorities so on edge.

In the southern state of Chiapas, which borders Guatemala, the New World screwworm fly’s rapid spread appears to have caught most ranchers off guard, despite memories of previous outbreaks in the 1980s and 1990s.

In the town of Cintalapa, Ranch caretaker Edi Valencia Santos said that Mexican government officials have come to his community to talk to people with livestock, but so far without resources.

He has had five infected animals on the ranch.

Meanwhile, the price of medicines used to treat livestock infected with the screwworm have soared in price.

That has led some to fall back on home remedies like applying gasoline or lime to open wounds to coax out the worms.

In addition to the cost of the medicine, treatment requires careful monitoring and usually involves multiple courses.

Any open wound, even very small ones, are an invitation to the fly to lay its eggs.

Veterinarian Alfredo Chávez, left Chiapas to study in 1989, so he says he missed seeing the effects of that outbreak, but now he’s seen cases multiply in his corner of Chiapas over the past month.

He’s heard of dozens of cases in the area now and treated about a dozen himself. It’s not just cows either — sheep, pigs, cats and dogs are targets as well.

Armed with a pair of blue tweezers and an aerosol spray that helps draw the maggots out, Chávez moves from animal to animal.

He puts maggots in plastic tubes as samples, which he provides to agricultural authorities.

But beyond providing the tubes and encouraging ranchers to report cases, he said the government has not provided much help.

"We have practically not had any official support,” he said.

Trump and his allies say the $2.5 billion renovation reflects an institution run amok. The Fed allowed reporters to tour the building before the visit by Trump, who, in his real estate career, has bragged about his lavish spending on architectural accoutrements that gave a Versailles-like golden flair to his buildings.

He didn't have as long a tenure as they did. But he had the quality of legislation, make a difference in people's lives. It's unfortunate that it went down this path, but I think that history will treat him well because he did great things for our country, a super patriot, loved America, honored our Constitution, a big contrast to what we have now.”

She spoke about a variety of topics, including her thoughts on President Donald Trump’s second term.

 

“It's always a mystery to me how disrespectful he is of the office he holds, how unpatriotic he is in terms of the institutions of our government, how unwilling he is to honor his oath of office and protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, that he still has a following,” Pelosi said,

 

Pelosi was asked if she had any thoughts on former President Joe Biden stepping off the Democratic ticket.
