STORYLINE:

Disgraced former U.S. Rep. George Santos is expected to begin serving a seven-year prison sentence on Friday for the fraud charges that got him ousted from Congress.

The New York Republican pleaded guilty last summer to federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft charges for deceiving donors and stealing people’s identities in order to fund his congressional campaign.

He must report to federal prison before 2 p.m. EDT (1800GMT) It’s unclear where he’ll serve his time, though a federal judge has recommended that Santos be housed in a facility in the Northeast.

Santos and his lawyers declined to comment to The Associated Press ahead of him reporting to prison. The federal Bureau of Prisons, meanwhile, said it doesn’t discuss the status of inmates until they’re officially in custody.

In April, a federal judge declined to give Santos a lighter two-year sentence that he sought, saying she was unconvinced he was truly remorseful.

In the weeks before his sentencing, Santos said he was “profoundly sorry” for his crimes, but he also complained frequently that he was a victim of a political witch hunt and prosecutorial overreach.

Santos was elected in 2022, flipping a wealthy district representing parts of Queens and Long Island for the GOP.

But he served for less than a year and became just the sixth member of the House to be ousted by colleagues after it was revealed he had fabricated much of his life story.

During his winning campaign, Santos painted himself as a successful business owner who worked at prestigious Wall Street firms when, in reality, he was struggling financially.

He also falsely claimed to have been a volleyball star at a college he never attended and referred to himself as “a proud American Jew” before insisting he meant that he was “Jew-ish” because his Brazilian mother’s family had a Jewish background.

The cascade of lies eventually led to congressional and criminal inquiries into how Santos funded his campaign and, ultimately, his political downfall.

STORYLINE:

A major escalation in fighting between Thailand and Cambodia prompted mass evacuations from border areas Friday.

Thai civilians are packing up to escape the artillery hit zones, which saw over a dozen killed in Thailand on Thursday.

A roadside gas station in Sisaket province was hit by Cambodian artillery shelling and is now abandoned.

Evacuees in Sisaket were seen packing up vehicles with their belongings and heading away from the border.

Farmer Chudaporn Promsupa said she was preparing to leave with her family on Friday after hearing explosions through the previous day.

"I’m a bit scared too. Now we are packed up and ready to leave like them too, but we’re still not sure where to go. Maybe to the homes of our relatives who live quite far away," she said.

The U.N. Security Council is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on the crisis later Friday in New York, while Malaysia, which chairs a regional bloc that includes both countries, called for an end to hostilities and offered to mediate.

The fighting included gunfire exchanges and shelling and rocket fire, which Thai authorities said killed a Thai soldier and 13 civilians and wounded 14 soldiers and 32 other civilians. Thailand responded with air strikes.

A small, family-run Cognac house warned on Wednesday that an inevitable price hike that would be consequence of possible looming U.S. tariffs that could make it ‘prohibitive’ for its American clients.

On their three-century-old family estate, Jean and Amy Pasquet are bracing for a worse case scenario and rethinking their U.S. marketing plans as the Trump administration threatens to impose new levies on European goods of up to 30% on August 1.

“A bottle like the (L’Organic) 4 with the 30% tariff and the exchange rate, usually in the U.S. It's sold just under the bar of $50," Amy Pasquet, originally from North Carolina, told the Associated Press on a tour of her property.

“It's going to come out at about $80 now. So that's gonna be pretty much prohibitive," she added.

Over the last three years, the U.S. market generated between 35,000 and 55,000 euros (41,000 and 65,000 U.S. dollars) annually which, for Jean-Luc Pasquet Cognac, represents over 10% in their volume of sales and around 5% in terms of turnover.

Global cognac exports reached 158.5 million bottles between July 2024 and June 2025, according to industry figures.

The United States is the top market, importing 68.5 million bottles, followed by China with 25.6 million.

But with Donald Trump’s election, orders have dropped to negligible levels says Pasquet.

Threats from China and anger over legislative deadlock are dominating Taiwan’s political discourse as residents rally for and against a campaign to recall two dozen opposition Nationalist Party lawmakers in polling to be held on Saturday.

Thousands of supporters of the independence-leaning ruling Democratic Progressive Party turned out in the heart of the capital Taipei on Thursday evening to hear from civil society activists, writers, musicians and others who support the recalls, which could potentially give the party, also known as the DPP, a majority in the legislature.

The DPP won last year’s presidential election, but came up short in the legislature.

Since then, the China-friendly Nationalists, also known as the KMT, and their allies have sought to hobble the power of the executive and blocked key legislation, especially the defense budget.

That has been seen as undermining both Taiwan’s hard-won democracy and its ability to deter China’s threat to invade the island it considers its own territory.

Those concerns prompted activists to campaign for recall votes in the districts where Nationalists were seen as most vulnerable, and they succeeded in 24 districts where votes are scheduled this weekend.

A recall measures must win 40% of the constituents in a district to succeed, after which a special election will be held to fill the seat, in which all parties can compete.

The KMT and the smaller Taiwan People’s Party together hold a majority in the parliament with 62 seats, while the ruling DPP holds 51 seats.

The KMT on Thursday sent some of its best known politicians, including the mayor of Taipei, the speaker of the legislature and the party chairman, out to urge voters to oppose the recall.

It also planned a rally in Taipei on Friday. The KMT calls the measure a power grab by the DPP and a threat to multi-party democracy.

Several hundred Cambodians have fled from a village to a remote Buddhist temple as fighting on the border with Thailand continues.

Thai and Cambodian soldiers have clashed along the border between their countries in a major escalation that left at least 14 people dead, mostly civilians.

The two sides fired small arms, artillery and rockets, and Thailand also launched airstrikes.

At the temple in Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey Province makeshift tents were being set up under the trees for those who had left their homes.

One evacuee, Veng Chin, 74, pleaded with both the Thai and Cambodian governments to negotiate a settlement to end the conflict.

“I was so scared, shaking so much. I didn't bring anything with me," she said.

"May I ask Thailand and Cambodia to negotiate a settlement as soon as possible so that I can return to my home and work on the farm.”

Fighting took place in at least six areas on Thursday, according to Thai Defense Ministry spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri, a day after a land mine explosion along the border wounded five Thai soldiers and led Bangkok to withdraw its ambassador from Cambodia and expel Cambodia’s envoy to Thailand.

On Friday, Cambodia's chief official in Oddar Meanchey province, Gen. Khov Ly, said clashes resumed early in the morning near the ancient Ta Muen Thom temple.

Associated Press reporters near the border could hear sounds of artillery from early morning hours.

The escalation represents a rare instance of military conflict between member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nation, though Thailand has tangled with Cambodia before over the border and has had sporadic skirmishes with western neighbor Myanmar.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged both sides “to exercise maximum restraint and address any issues through dialogue," according to U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq.

STORYLINE:

Sounds of artillery firing could be heard along the Thai-Cambodian border early Friday morning.

It comes as Thai and Cambodian soldiers continued to clash along the border between their countries in a major escalation that has left at least 14 people dead, mostly civilians.

The two sides have fired small arms, artillery and rockets, and Thailand also launched airstrikes.

Most villagers have fled Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey province and but some have stayed home to protect their properties.

Cambodia's chief official in Oddar Meanchey province, Gen. Khov Ly, said clashes resumed early in the morning near the ancient Ta Muen Thom temple.

Associated Press reporters near the border could hear sounds of artillery from early morning hours.

The escalation represents a rare instance of military conflict between member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nation, though Thailand has tangled with Cambodia before over the border and has had sporadic skirmishes with western neighbor Myanmar.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged both sides “to exercise maximum restraint and address any issues through dialogue," according to U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq.
