STORYLINE:

Palestinians in Deir al-Balah scrambled to get food to feed their families as airdrops of aid continued in the Gaza Strip on Saturday.

“This way is not for humans, it is for animals,” said Mahmoud Hawila, who rushed along with crowds of others to pick up what he could to feed his family.

Humanitarian agencies have said the airdrops are not effective for a territory like Gaza.

They are expensive and can be dangerous, falling over tents or people in the small, overcrowded areas where more than 2 million Palestinians are living, they say.

Israel said Friday it will intensify its 22-month war with Hamas by taking over Gaza City, stirring fears for people in the Strip and Israeli hostages still held in Gaza, and renewing international pressure for an end to the conflict.

The Israeli offensive has killed tens of thousands of people in Gaza, displaced most of the population, destroyed vast areas and pushed the territory toward famine.

The timing of another major ground operation is unclear.

It will likely require mobilizing thousands of troops and forcibly evacuating civilians, almost certainly worsening Gaza's humanitarian crisis.

Hamas-led militants attack triggered the war when they stormed into Southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and abducting 251 people.

Most of the hostages have been released in ceasefires deals but 50 remain inside Gaza. Israel believes around 20 of them to be still alive.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign has killed over 61,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many were fighters or civilians.

The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government and staffed by medical professionals.

The United Nations and independent experts view the ministry’s figures as the most reliable estimate of casualties. Israel has disputed them without offering a toll of its own.

Residents of Azerbaijan's capital welcomed on Saturday the results of a peace summit between Armenia and Azerbaijan hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.

The two countries in the South Caucasus signed agreements with each other and the U.S. that will reopen key transportation routes while allowing the U.S. to seize on Russia’s declining influence in the region.

The deal includes an agreement that will create a major transit corridor to be named the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, the White House said.

A Baku resident, Gunduz Aliyev, hailed the efforts by the U.S. to broker the signing of a deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan, both former Soviet republics, which also strikes a geopolitical blow to their former imperial master, Russia.

"Russia couldn’t do it, but the United States succeeded," he said.

Another Baku resident, Ali Mammadov, said the deal will bring peace and stability to the region after nearly four decades of conflict as the two nations fought for control of the Karabakh region, known internationally as Nagorno-Karabakh.

STORYLINE:

Residents of a small French village spared from the country's biggest wildfire in decades said the flames came close but local vegetation acted like a firebreaker, keeping them safe.

Fance’s biggest wildfire in years was spreading quickly Wednesday in a Mediterranean region near Spain after leaving one person dead and several injured, authorities said.

The fire burned an area larger than Paris, and the military was called in to help.

Coustouge is a small village standing at the south end of the Corbieres.

Surrounded by hills covered in black with charred trees and bushes and the occasional vineyard that acted as a fire breaker, the entire village was saved from being damaged by the fire.

Paulette, a retired archaeologist and her husband, an also retired forest technician, said that at one point they had been completely encircled by the flames.

"We couldn’t walk further than that bridge over there," she recounted.

"We participated in the tasks of taking water from the deposit we have that collects rainwater. We opened the taps and took turns, before we started taking water from the house, because there was only one fire truck.”

More than half of the 100 residents of the hamlet sought refuge in the nearby town of Tuchan, where they are sheltered at a public sports facility.

The village continues to have all infrastructure cut off.

Firefighters and local authorities remained on high alert Friday after the blaze was contained in the south of the country, amid forecasts of very high temperatures which could reignite it.

Over three days, the fire spread across more than 160 square kilometers (62 square miles) in the Aude wine region and claimed one life, forcing hundreds of residents to flee their homes.

In hot and dry weather, the blaze quickly spread with a perimeter reaching 90 kilometres and local authorities said they need to remain vigilant throughout the weekend as temperatures are expected to rise above 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) during another heat wave.

Region administrator Christian Pouget said some 1,000 people have not yet been able to return to their homes after the fire swept through 15 communes ... [truncated]
