STORYLINE:

A fast-moving wildfire on Friday forced a series of evacuations southeast of the capital Athens.

The blaze approached residential areas as firefighters battled strong winds.

The fire advanced over scrub-covered hillsides in the Keratea region, spreading through an area with scattered homes, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Athens.

A full moon rose over the hills south of Athens set ablaze by the wildfire as gale-force winds pushed the flames through inhabited areas in the seaside Thimari region, with aerial support for firefighters unable to operate at night. 

The Culture Ministry organized events and late openings at more than 100 museums, archaeological sites and monuments across the country through August 13 to coincide with the August moon. 

As the blaze swept through olive groves and hillside scrub toward the sea, residents and firefighters battled to save homes in the fire’s path in an effort assisted by the armed forces that helped dig fire breaks.

Nagasaki is marking the U.S. atomic attack on the southern Japanese city 80 years ago and survivors are working to make their hometown the last place on earth hit by the bomb.

The atomic bomb dropped by the United States on Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, killed some 70,000 people, three days after the bombing of Hiroshima killed 140,000.

Japan surrendered on Aug. 15, 1945, ending World War II and the country’s nearly half-century of aggression across Asia.

About 2,600 people, including representatives from more than 90 countries, attended a memorial event Saturday at Nagasaki Peace Park, where Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba spoke. 

At 11:02 a.m., the exact time when the plutonium bomb exploded above Nagasaki, participants observed a moment of silence as a bell rang. 

Dozens of doves, a symbol of peace, were released after a speech by Nagasaki Mayor Shiro Suzuki, whose parents are survivors of the attack.

Survivors and their families gathered Saturday in rainy weather at Peace Park and nearby Hypocenter Park, located below the bomb’s exact detonation spot, hours before the official ceremony.

Others prayed at churches in Nagasaki, home to Catholic converts who went deep underground during centuries of violent persecution in Japan’s feudal era.

Despite their pain from wounds, discrimination and illnesses from radiation, survivors have publicly committed to a shared goal of abolishing nuclear weapons. But they worry about the world moving in the opposite direction. 

Aging survivors and their supporters in Nagasaki now put their hopes of achieving nuclear weapons abolition in the hands of younger people, telling them the attack is not distant history, but an issue that remains relevant to their future. 

Survivors are frustrated by a growing nuclear threat and support among international leaders for developing or possessing nuclear weapons for deterrence.

Artisans and merchants in the Mexican state of Oaxaca are calling out sportswear company Adidas for plagiarizing the traditional huarache sandal, alleging that a new design is strikingly similar to the Indigenous footwear.

For Viridiana Jarquín García, a huaraches vendor in Oaxaca's capital, the Adidas shoes were a “cheap copy” of the kind of work that Mexican artists take time and care to craft.

“The artistry is being lost. We're losing our tradition," she said in front of her small booth of leather shoes.

The controversy has fueled accusations of cultural appropriation by the footwear brand, with authorities saying this is not the first time traditional Mexican handicrafts have been copied. Citing these concerns, local authorities have asked Adidas to withdraw the shoe model.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Friday that Adidas was already in talks with authorities in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca to provide “compensation for the people who were plagiarized," and that her government was preparing legal reforms to prevent the copying of Mexican handicrafts.

The design at the center of the controversy is the “Oaxaca Slip-On," a sandal created by U.S. designer Willy Chavarría for Adidas Originals.

The sandals feature thin leather straps braided in a style that is unmistakably similar to the traditional Mexican huaraches. Instead of flat leather soles, the Adidas shoes tout a chunkier, sports shoe sole.

“To use the type of leather our artisans have here and to make the type of weaving they do, it takes days,” explained Susana García, a huarache vendor at a market downtown Oaxaca.

According to Mexican authorities, Adidas' design contains elements that are part of the cultural heritage of the Zapotec Indigenous communities in Oaxaca, particularly in the town of Villa Hidalgo de Yalálag.

Handicrafts are a crucial economic lifeline in Mexico, providing jobs for around half a million people across the country.

The Texas House of Representatives failed to meet a quorum on Friday for the third time this week as Democratic lawmakers continued their walkout to block a vote on congressional voting maps sought by President Donald Trump in a widening national battle over redistricting.

Republicans had warned they would escalate efforts to end the nearly weeklong holdout if defiant Democrats do not return to the state Capitol. But the Democrats who bolted for points across the country on Aug. 3 still were not back for Friday’s scheduled House floor vote.

The state constitution requires at least 100 members present for the 150-member House to do business, and Republicans hold an 88-62 majority in the chamber. Only 95 lawmakers were counted as present.

Frustrated Republican leaders continued to ratchet up the pressure as the walkout persists, including new and expanding efforts to try to remove Democratic lawmakers from office and seeking help from the FBI to assist Texas state troopers trying to find them.

The dozens of Democrats who left the state have shown no signs of buckling for now: A group of them appeared later Friday with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a public show of support for the walkout.

He was removed from the location by Atlanta Fire Rescue to render aid. He did pass at the scene. We also know that the CDC campus did receive multiple rounds into their buildings. Right now, as the mayor stated, we are not aware of any injury that occurred to anyone on that location."

"You know, the talent that we've been able to spotlight and allow these incredible athletes to have a platform to perform and inspire the next generation, that's what's important to me because when I was young, I got to see Billie Jean King take on Bobby Riggs in the Battle of the Sexes. And it changed how I looked at things and I believe that you know female wrestlers. You know it's it's wrestling, it's good versus evil, but what I admire so much is that the women stand up for what they believe in and are willing to fight for what people maybe their opinion might be wrong, but they're willing to to you know lay it on the line."

Jeanie Buss continues to amplify female athletes with "Women of Wrestling."

The Lakers owner sat down with The Associated Press at Comic Con in San Diego, California to chat about the importance of pushing forward female athletes in wrestling.

"What I admire so much is that the women stand up for what they believe in and are willing to fight for what people, maybe their opinion might be wrong, but they're willing to to you know lay it on the line," said Buss.
