"We're learning that New York Attorney General Letitia James has been subpoenaed by President Donald Trump's Department of Justice. This is part of an investigation into whether James violated Trump's civil rights when she filed a lawsuit against him over alleged fraud in his personal business dealings. The subpoenas seek records related to that case, as well as another lawsuit involving the NRA and its longtime leader, Wayne LaPierre. A jury last year found the NRA and LaPierre liable for misconduct. This represents an escalation of the Trump administration's ongoing efforts to investigate Trump's perceived political rivals. Letitia James, a Democrat, previously investigated Trump and his Republican administration. She also won a $454 million civil fraud judgment against him in a lawsuit, alleging that he defrauded banks and other lenders. An attorney for James has slammed this investigation as politically motivated. He said this is a desperate example of the administration carrying out the president's political retribution campaign. This is the second known Department of Justice investigation into Letitia James, the Department has also been investigating mortgage fraud allegations, which she has also denied."

The sky above Ecuador’s capital, Quito burst with color and charm on Friday as multicolored hot air balloons soared during the fourth Half of the World Balloon Festival.

The event opened at Mitad del Mundo (Half of the World) festival, home to the Monument to the Equator - a towering stone landmark topped with a globe, marking where the Northern and Southern Hemispheres meet.

Highly experienced international pilots, including world champions, took part in the event.

Mario Orozco, a Mexican hot air balloon pilot said that he was looking forward to meeting visitors to "get to know us, approach us, and bring their children to enjoy. I hope everyone can enjoy this."

Pilots are operating 21 balloons from Brazil, Mexico, and Ecuador.

The balloons ascended with the first light of the day in a two-hour performance that rewarded early risers with an unforgettable view.

Beyond the aerial show, visitors enjoyed the vibrant scenery for photographs, sampled diverse local cuisine, and explored stalls featuring products from regional entrepreneurs and artisans.

STORYLINE:

A full moon rose late Friday over the hills south of Athens set ablaze by a wildfire that left one person dead and forced hundreds from their homes. 

Gale-force winds pushed the flames through inhabited areas in the seaside Thimari region, with aerial support for firefighters unable to operate at night. 

The blaze broke out not far from the ancient Temple of Poseidon, where crowds of amateur photographers normally gather to watch the full moon rise over the clifftop site. 

Friday's moon rose blood red over the clifftop, illuminated by the flames.

The Culture Ministry organized events and late openings at more than 100 museums, archaeological sites and monuments across the country through August 13 to coincide with the August moon. 

As the blaze swept through olive groves and hillside scrub toward the sea, residents and firefighters battled to save homes in the fire’s path in an effort assisted by the armed forces that helped dig fire breaks.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan says he's “always operated within the highest legal and ethical standards” after President Donald Trump said he should resign.

On Thursday Trump said on Truth Social platform that, “The CEO of Intel is highly CONFLICTED and must resign, immediately. There is no other solution to this problem. Thank you for your attention to this problem!”

Trump's post landed after Sen. Tom Cotton sent a letter to Intel Chairman Frank Yeary expressing concern over Tan’s investments and ties to semiconductor firms that are reportedly linked to the Chinese Communist Party and the People’s Liberation Army, and asked the board whether Tan had divested his interests in these companies to eliminate any conflicts of interest.

It was not immediately clear on Thursday if Tan, who took over as Intel’s CEO in March, had divested his interests in the companies.

The economic and political rivalry between the U.S. and China are increasingly focused on computer chips, AI and other digital technologies that are expected to shape future economies and military conflicts.

Intel said in a statement that it’s “deeply committed to advancing U.S. national and economic security interests and are making significant investments aligned with the President’s America First agenda.”

Tan also addressed the situation, saying in a message to employees that there was misinformation circulating about his past roles at Walden International and Cadence Design Systems and that he's always followed proper standards.

Tan also said Intel was in contact with the Trump administration.

“We are engaging with the Administration to address the matters that have been raised and ensure they have the facts,” Tan said. “I fully share the President’s commitment to advancing U.S. national and economic security, I appreciate his leadership to advance these priorities, and I’m proud to lead a company that is so central to these goals.”.

That route will connect Azerbaijan and its autonomous Nakhchivan exclave, which are separated by a 32-kilometer-wide (20-mile-wide) patch of Armenian territory. The demand from Azerbaijan had held up peace talks in the past.

The signing of a deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan, both former Soviet republics, also strikes a geopolitical blow to their former imperial master, Russia.

The Trump-brokered deal would allow the U.S. to deepen its reach in the region as Moscow retreats, senior U.S. administration officials said.
