STORYLINE:

As talks for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip resume, Palestinians in the battered enclave say they are desperate for deal to end the war between Israel and Hamas.

Abeer al-Najjar, who is staying with her family in a tent in the sprawling coastal Muwasi area, said it had been a struggle to secure sufficient food and water for her family, and that living displaced in a tent amidst the bombardments had been miserable.

"Oh God, let there be a truce, not one where they deceive us for a month or two and then return to do to us what they did before," she said as she cooked vegetables.

"We want a continuous truce, a complete ceasefire."

Amani Abu Amr said she had been waiting for a water truck to come every four days, and the lack of water had led to her children being dehydrated and dealing with skin conditions, especially in the summer heat.

She said she’s desperate for a ceasefire but she feared people in the Strip would be let down, as in previous rounds of talks.

"We expected many times that there would be a truce, but all in vain," she said.

STORYLINE:

Malaysian Trade Minister, Zafrul Aziz, said Wednesday he would not strike a deal on U.S.-imposed tariffs if it did not benefit Malaysian companies and Malaysian people.

"We don’t want to reach a deal for the sake of reaching a deal. If the deal does not benefit Malaysia, we should not have a deal, right. We have to be firm on that,” said Zafrul.

Malaysia is among 14 mostly Asian countries named in a new tariff list announced by President Donald Trump on Tuesday. The U.S. raised tariffs on Malaysian exports from 24% to 25%.

Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpa, Zafrul said Malaysia had negotiated "in good faith" in earlier tariff negotiations but said there are "certain red lines that we would not compromise on."

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, warned Wednesday that global trade is being weaponized as Southeast Asia’s foreign ministers opened an annual meeting while facing the threat of increased U.S. tariffs.

Zafrul and Anwar will meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio when he arrives in Kuala Lumpa on Thursday.

STORYLINE:

Released hostage Keith Siegel and relatives of hostages held in Gaza spoke in front of the Foreign and Defense Committee at the Knesset on Tuesday.

Siegel, who was held hostage in Gaza for 484 days shared testimonies from his captivity with hostages Omri Miran and Matan Angrest.

"I call upon you, Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu and President (Donald) Trump to do what needs to be done, and you both can do it. Bring all of the 50 hostages back and end the war," said Siegel.

U.S. President Trump has made clear that following last month's 12-day war between Israel and Iran he would like to see the Gaza conflict end soon.

The meeting that was held Monday between Trump and Netanyahu may give new urgency to a U.S. ceasefire proposal being discussed by Israel and Hamas.

"We have a window of chance to end this nightmare and to bring our boys and the precious ones to our families back," said Anat Angrest, mother of hostage Matan.

White House officials are urging Israel and Hamas to quickly seal a new ceasefire agreement that would bring about a 60-day pause in the fighting, send aid flooding into Gaza and free at least some of the remaining 50 hostages held in the territory, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

Trump, whose policies have largely aligned with Israel's own priorities, pledged last week to be "very firm" with Netanyahu on ending the war, without saying what that would entail.

Pressure by Trump has worked on Netanyahu in the past, with a ceasefire deal having been reached right as the president was taking office again.
