Disgraced former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol arrived in court Wednesday for a hearing to review a special prosecutor’s request for his arrest on charges related to his brief imposition of martial law in December.

Yoon, who was ousted in April after the Constitutional Court upheld his impeachment, was released from prison in March after the Seoul Central District Court overturned his January arrest, allowing him to stand trial for rebellion without being detained.

Arriving in a black van with his lawyers, Yoon did not respond to questions before entering the court in Seoul.

His criminal case is being handled by a team of investigators under a special prosecutor, Cho Eun-suk, who are pursuing additional charges over Yoon’s authoritarian push, including abuse of power, falsifying official documents and obstructing official duties.

Cho’s team said they view Yoon as a potential threat to destroy evidence. They questioned him twice before submitting a request for his arrest warrant to the court on Sunday.

This is due to different factors — one of the main factors is that older people tend to live with co-morbid conditions. That said, older people are more likely to have cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, etcetera. Apart from these chronic conditions, older people are reported to have impaired thermoregulatory systems. That is when the temperatures are very high, the generic population have good mechanisms to regulate heat whereas older populations, these mechanisms do not work properly, putting strain on their cardiovascular systems and thus putting them at higher risk for hospitalization or mortality."

An Israeli report released Tuesday said that Hamas used sexual violence as a “tactical weapon of war” in its Oct. 7, 2023, attacks, building on other investigations by international and Israeli rights groups and the United Nations.

The report by the Dinah Project, a team of legal and gender experts, based its findings on survivor and witness testimonies, accounts from first responders, and forensic, visual and audio evidence. It called for a shift in how conflict-related sexual violence is prosecuted, saying Hamas silenced its victims by killing them, robbing investigators of key evidence.

“Most victims were permanently silenced — either murdered during or after the assaults or remain too traumatized to talk — creating unique evidentiary challenges,” the report said, calling for a more tailored legal approach.

The report was presented to Israel's First Lady, Michal Herzog, during a meeting with released hostages and a team working on the report.

"I remember, they pointed guns at me. I remember hands, not related to me, touching me. I remember screaming and then darkness," Ilana Gritzewsky, a released hostage said during the meeting with Israel's first lady. Hamas attacked Gritzewsky's house in Kibbutz Nir Oz and kidnapped her along with her husband.

El cambio climático y los recientes problemas con las semillas falsificadas han puesto en jaque los esfuerzos agrícolas de Kenia para mejorar la seguridad alimentaria.

 

En la localidad de Kikuyo, en el centro del país, el Banco Nacional de Semillas se erige como salvaguarda de la agricultura nacional.

 

En el banco que fue creado en 1988 se catalogan y almacenan más de 50.000 variedades de semillas.

En los últimos meses, los agricultores de Kenia han tenido que lidiar con el problema de las semillas falsificadas compradas de vendedores privados.

 

Algunos agricultores presentaron un recurso judicial contra una ley de 2012 que prohíbe compartir semillas y les obliga comprar nuevas semillas cada temporada de siembra, algo que les resulta caro.

 

Francis Ngiri uno de los agricultores que presentaron la demanda, tiene un banco de semillas autóctonas en su granja a 120 kilómetros de la capital, Nairobi.

The remains of a Congolese customs worker who was killed for resisting a bribe and recently beatified by the Vatican were transferred from a public cemetery to a cathedral in Congo’s eastern city of Goma during a special Mass on Tuesday.

Hundreds of Catholic faithful gathered at Saint Joseph Cathedral to pay tribute to Floribert Bwana Chui Bin Kositi, who was kidnapped and killed in 2007 by unidentified assailants after he refused to allow rancid rice from neighboring Rwanda to be transported across the border.

The Vatican beatified Kositi during a ceremony in Rome.

Pope Francis recognized him as a martyr of the faith late last year, setting him on the path to beatification and to possibly becoming Congo’s first saint.

It fit Francis' broader understanding of martyr as a social justice concept, allowing those deemed to have been killed for doing God’s work and following the Gospel to be considered for sainthood.

In the conflict-battered city of Goma, where years of war have increased both desperation and corruption, Kositi’s beatification has eased some of the pain caused by his death.

Some wore shirts and colorful traditional dresses with Kositi’s portrait and chanted. Others waved flags that read “martyr of honesty and moral integrity.”

Aline Minani, a close friend of Kositi, said the beatification was deeply meaningful to the local community.

Marie Juudi, also present at the Mass, said she encourages young people in Goma and across Congo to follow Kositi's example.

Eastern Congo has been wracked by conflict with more than 100 armed groups, the most potent backed by Rwanda, that have killed millions since the 1990s.

The fighting escalated earlier this year when the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels advanced and seized Goma, followed by another strategic city, Bukavu.

More than 160 people are still believed to be missing in Texas days after flash floods killed over 100 people during the July Fourth weekend, the state's governor said Tuesday.

Search-and-rescue teams are using heavy equipment to untangle and peel away layers of trees, unearth large rocks in riverbanks and move massive piles of debris that stretch for miles in the search for the missing people.

Crews in airboats, helicopters and on horseback along with hundreds of volunteers are part of one of the largest search operations in Texas history.

The huge jump in the number unaccounted for — roughly three times higher than previously said — came after authorities set up a hotline for families to call.

Those reported missing are in Kerr County, where most of the victims have been recovered so far, Gov. Greg Abbott said.

Many were likely visiting or staying in the state’s Hill Country during the holiday but did not register at a camp or hotel, he said during a news conference.

The county's lowlands along the Guadalupe River are filled with youth camps and campgrounds, including Camp Mystic, the century-old all-girls Christian summer camp where at least 27 campers and counselors died. Officials said Tuesday that five campers and one counselor have still not been found.

"We've removed sediment from the pond that has this impact, and we have either treated it directly, so heated it directly to destroy the PFASs in the sediment itself, or we've washed that sediment with a liquid, including things like ethanol, to get the chemicals off the sediment into a liquid waste stream, which we can then treat directly. So we either are treating it on the solid phase or in the liquid phase, and we're trying to do both here.”
