(11 Mar 2020) The 23-year sentence for rape and sexual assault that will send Harvey Weinstein to prison is bringing a sense of closure for many of his accusers.

Model Tarale Wulff, who says she was raped by Weinstein in 2005, said she never thought she would find healing.

Judge James Burke's sentence, she told journalists outside a Manhattan court on Wednesday, brought a sense of joy.

"I couldn't believe what I was about to hear," she said referring to hearing the judge say the world "twenty".

"No one thought we'd be here today. No one thought we'd -- Harvey would ever see a courtroom and even still, no one gave him more than 10 or 12 years," she added.

Accuser Ambra Battilana Gutierrez said she came forward to help others and felt happy "to be contributing to change."

Gutierrez, who was not involved in Weinstein's New York trial, says he assaulted her in 2015.

Weinstein, who has been accused of violating scores of women, was convicted last month of raping a once-aspiring actress in a New York City hotel room in 2013 and forcibly performing oral sex on former TV and film production assistant Mimi Haleyi at his apartment in 2006 and faced a maximum of 29 years in prison.

Weinstein was convicted on two counts: criminal sex act for the 2006 assault on the production assistant and rape in the third degree for a 2013 attack on another woman.

He was acquitted of the more serious charges against him of first-degree rape and two counts of predatory sexual assault.

Weinstein could get up to 28 years in prison on charges of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by use of force and sexual battery in the California case. Authorities have not said when he would go there to face those charges.

Three more sexual assault cases under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department and Beverly Hills' police could mean that he'll face additional charges. No details have been provided on these cases.

The 67-year-old Weinstein had a look of resignation on his face as he heard the verdict: guilty on two charges, not guilty on a set of more serious ones.

While it was not the across-the-board victory prosecutors and his accusers had hoped for, it could put the stooped and feeble-looking Weinstein behind bars for the rest of his life. The charges carry up to 29 years in prison.

He was acquitted on the most serious charges, two counts of predatory sexual assault, each carrying up to life in prison. Both of those counts hinged on the testimony of "Sopranos" actress Annabella Sciorra, who said Weinstein barged into her apartment, raped her and forcibly performed oral sex on her in the mid-1990s.

The trial was the first criminal case to arise from the barrage of allegations against Weinstein from more than 90 women, including actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Salma Hayek, Ashley Judd, Uma Thurman and Mira Sorvino. Most of those cases were too old to prosecute.

"I've been curious to find out, will some of those actresses actually go back to acting, will there be roles for people like Annabella Sciora and Mira Sorvino," said Jeremy Barr of The Hollywood Reporter.

(25 Nov 2019) A US judge has set an April trial date for two jail guards accused of failing to make required checks on Jeffrey Epstein the day he died.

US District Judge Analisa Torres said on Monday that the trial of guards Tova Noel and Michael Thomas could begin on April 20.

They have pleaded 'not guilty' to lying on prison records to make it seem as though they had made required checks on the financier before he was found unresponsive in his cell August 10.

New York City's medical examiner ruled Epstein's death a suicide.

Epstein was awaiting trial on charges he sexually abused teenage girls at his Manhattan mansion and a Florida home.

(25 Feb 2020) LAWYER: HOSPITALIZED WEINSTEIN IS 'ENERGIZED' ABOUT APPEAL

A hospitalized Harvey Weinstein was "upbeat" and "energized" about appealing his sexual assault and rape conviction, one of his lawyers said Tuesday (25 FEB. 2020).

Weinstein remained in a jail unit at Bellevue Hospital, where he was taken after the verdict Monday to be checked out for heart palpitations and high blood pressure.

His attorney on Tuesday called the hospitalization "a precautionary measure to take him here and make sure his vitals and everything were OK" and said it wasn't clear how long Weinstein would be at Bellevue.

After Monday's verdict, he had been destined for jail to await sentencing, set for March 11.

He said the 67-year-old former Hollywood studio boss was insisting on his innocence and "somewhat flabbergasted by the verdict," but determined to fight on.

Weinstein faces a possible sentence of five to 29 years after a Manhattan jury convicted him of sexually assaulting Haleyi and raping an aspiring actress in 2013. He was acquitted of first-degree rape and two counts of predatory sexual assault.

Weinstein has maintained that any sex between him and his accusers was consensual.

Trump himself stands accused of sexual misconduct, including a rape allegation, by more than a dozen women when he was a private citizen. He has denied the allegations and has not been charged in any of the alleged sexual assaults.

(3 Jan 2020) Mexico's former top security official has pleaded not guilty to charges he accepted a fortune in drug-money bribes from kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's notorious Sinaloa cartel.

Genaro Garcia Luna entered the plea Friday in a New York courtroom.

He has been indicted on charges of cocaine trafficking conspiracy and making false statements.

During his brief appearance, Garcia Luna shook his head "no" as prosecutors outlined the charges against him.

A judge ordered him detained after a prosecutor argued he'd be a flight risk. Garcia Luna's lawyer said he'll seek bail at a later date.

(30 Jun 2021) ACTOR ALLISON MACK GETS 3 YEARS IN NXIVM SEX-SLAVE CASE

TV actor Allison Mack, who played a key role in the scandal-ridden, cult-like group NXIVM, was sentenced to three years in prison Wednesday (30 JUNE 2021) on charges she manipulated women into becoming sex slaves for the group’s spiritual leader.

  

Mack - best known for her role as a young Superman’s close friend on the series “Smallville” - had previously pleaded guilty to the charges and began cooperating against NXIVM leader Keith Raniere. Prosecutors credited her with helping them mount evidence showing how Raniere created a secret society of brainwashed women who were branded with his initials.

  

At her sentencing in Brooklyn federal court, Mack renounced the self-improvement guru.

  

“I made choices I will forever regret,” she said, also telling the judge she was filled with “remorse and guilt.”

  

“I am sorry to those of you that I brought into NXIVM," she wrote in a letter filed with the court last week. "I am sorry I ever exposed you to the nefarious and emotionally abusive schemes of a twisted man.”

  

She reiterated her apologies to the victims in court on Wednesday: “From the deepest part of my heart and soul, I am sorry.”

  

Mack wept at times while reading her statement to the court. U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis told her he believed her apology was sincere, but said she deserved a serious sentence for using her celebrity to groom victims as “a willing and proactive ally” and “essential accomplice to Raniere's monstrous crimes.”

  

Under advisory sentencing guidelines, Mack had faced between 14 and 17 1/2 years behind bars, but her defense team argued in court papers that probation or a sentence to home confinement was more appropriate. Prosecutors had agreed that any prison term should be below the guidelines range because of her cooperation.

  

“The NXIVM saga and the story of Ms. Mack’s descent have been a tragedy for all involved. But that need not, and should not, be the end of the story for Allison Mack,” her lawyers wrote in court papers.

  

A victim, Jessica Joan, rejected Mack's apologies, telling the judge the actor deserved no mercy.

  

“She can blame Keith all she wants but she is a monster cut from the same cloth,” Joan said in court on Wednesday. “Allison Mack is a predator and an evil human being.”

  

Mack, 38, was once part of the inner circle of Raniere, whose group attracted millionaires and actors among its adherents. Prosecutors said she became a “master” for “slaves” she ordered “to perform labor, take nude photographs, and in some cases, to engage in sex acts with Raniere.”

  

As authorities closed in on Raniere, he fled to Mexico with Mack  and others to try to reconstitute the group there. He was arrested and sent to the United States in March 2018; Mack was arrested a few days later.

  

“Ms. Mack now understands that this was the best thing that could have happened to her at that time,” the defense papers said.

Attorney Gloria Allred who represented several of the women who testified against R. Kelly said that Kelly is a predator who deserved to be convicted.

"I have been practicing law for 47 years. During this time, I have pursued many sexual predators who have committed crimes against women and children," said Allred. "Of all the predators that I have pursued, however, Mr. Kelly is the worst."

R. Kelly, the R&B icon known for his anthem "I Believe I Can Fly," was convicted Monday (27 SEPT. 2021) in a sex trafficking trial after decades of avoiding criminal responsibility for numerous allegations of misconduct with young women and children.

  

A jury of seven men and five women found Kelly, 54, guilty of all nine counts, including racketeering, on their second day of deliberations.

Prosecutors alleged that the entourage of managers and aides who helped Kelly meet girls - and keep them obedient and quiet - amounted to a criminal enterprise. Two people have been charged with Kelly in a separate federal case pending in Chicago.

  

Allred said that Kelly used his "power of his business enterprise, and many of his inner circle employees to assist him and enable him in his plan and his scheme to lure his victims to him, isolate them, intimidate them, control them, indoctrinate them, punish them, shame them and humiliate them—all of which made Mr. Kelly more powerful and more dangerous than many other sexual predators who operate without a network of financial and businesses to support and enable them."

Kelly faces the possibility of decades in prison for crimes including violating the Mann Act, an anti- sex trafficking law that prohibits taking anyone across state lines "for any immoral purpose." Sentencing is scheduled for May 4.

(24 Sep 2021) R. Kelly's fate is now in a jury's hands after weeks of lurid testimony in a sexual misconduct trial.

A jury of seven men and five women began deliberating racketeering and sex trafficking charges against the R&B superstar Friday.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys finished their closing arguments this week.

The 54-year-old singer is accused of running a Chicago-based criminal enterprise that recruited his accusers for unwanted sex and mental torment.

The witnesses said Kelly subjected them to perverse and sadistic whims when they were underage.

He has denied any wrongdoing.

Outside of court on Friday, one of Kelly's attorneys, Deveraux Cannick, said he hoped the jury would "see the evidence or the lack of evidence that we saw."

When asked how Kelly was doing, Cannick said: "Stressful times. Life hangs in the balance."
