STORYLINE:

Police in Kenya clashed with demonstrators on Monday during the latest anti-government protests, killing 10 people, according to the state-funded human rights commission.

Authorities blocked major roads leading into the capital, Nairobi, and most businesses closed amid the strictest measures yet to contain the unrest.

Protesters lit bonfires and threw stones at police.

In Kitengela town in Nairobi's outskirts, police fired tear gas to disperse protesters who had lit bonfires on the road that connects to neighbouring Tanzania.

Kenyan youth and others for weeks have been protesting police brutality and poor governance while demanding President William Ruto’s resignation over alleged corruption and the high cost of living.

July 7, known as Saba Saba, is a significant date in Kenya’s history, marking the first major protests 35 years ago that called on then-President Daniel arap Moi - Ruto's mentor - for a transition from a one-party state to a multiparty democracy, which was realised in the 1992 elections.

Saba Saba is Swahili for Seven Seven.

Police officers on Monday stopped private and public vehicles from accessing Nairobi's city centre.

They also blocked most pedestrians from entering the capital, only allowing those deemed to have essential duties.

Roads leading to parliament - stormed in a protest last year - and the president’s office were barricaded using razor wire.

Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said on Sunday that the government would not tolerate violent protests and police would be deployed to ensure public safety.

Last month, Murkomen told police to “shoot on sight” anyone who approaches police stations during protests after several had been burned.

Now, he said in his letters, which also went to Kazakhstan, South Africa, Myanmar, Laos and Malaysia, that he could increase those rates if countries retaliate and that those rates could go up or go down, depending on how those countries have their relations with the United States. Trump's ostensible reason for doing this is to even up the trade deficit. But, all of this drama goes back to his April 2nd Liberation Day, when his high tariff rates caused hysteria in the financial markets, leading to him to set a 90 day negotiating period with baseline 10% tariff rates for most countries. Now that that negotiating period is coming to an end on Wednesday, July 9th, he doesn't have a lot of frameworks or signed deals in place. His only two are with the United Kingdom, which has been signed, and with Vietnam, which has not been signed. That has him deciding to unilaterally set the tariff rates himself. What impact is this going to have? We're going to see how companies manage, whether or not costs get passed on to consumers, whether they get passed on to other businesses, and how much foreign manufacturers can really absorb these prices."

President Donald Trump on Monday set a 25% tax on goods imported from Japan and South Korea, as well as new tariff rates on Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Laos and Myanmar, all of which would go into effect on Aug. 1.

Trump provided notice by posting letters on Truth Social that were addressed to the leaders of the various countries. The letters warned them to not retaliate by increasing their own import taxes, or else the Trump administration would further increase tariffs.

STORYLINE:

An iconic cemetery in Caracas has long fallen into decay, with tombs broken, objects stolen and people afraid to pass by.

It houses notable figures of Venezuela's history including ex-Presidents, poets and even a nephew of the South American independence hero Simón Bolívar.

Now tour groups are rediscovering the history of the tombs and the municipal authority has started cleaning up the site.

"We are here to polish the history of this historic, wonderful place that unfortunately because of vandalism and profanation of graves, people are terrified of it," said Gerónimo Maneiro a local tour guide.

Created in 1876, the site is drawing visitors back through guided walks that spotlight the cultural value of marble monuments dedicated to key figures of Venezuela’s history, like writer Romulo Gallegos who was president for less than 10 months in 1948.

The cemetery was once a symbol of civic pride, known for its ornate family mausoleums and simple graves alike.

But decades of neglect, vandalism and armed robberies turned it into a place to avoid.

Whilst the cemetery is still largely in ruins, with promises to restore prominent tombs unfulfilled, the tours continue to shine a light on the history buried there.
