STORYLINE:

First responders in Kerrville, Texas are being assisted in the search and recovery efforts by a crew of firefighters from Acuña, Mexico.

Jesus Gomez said his team recovered the body of one victim killed in the floods.

"It's hard, but first responders, we're a different breed, pretty much," Gomez said. "It's a lot of mental health things we need to do, but it's not the first time we see a dead body."

Gomez said the search is process is difficult, with much of the searching done by hand.

The weekend deluge in Texas caused catastrophic flash flooding that has killed at least 89 people.

Camp Mystic in Kerr County says Monday morning that it is “grieving the loss” of 27 campers and counselors as the search continues for victims of the disaster.

STORYLINE:

Displaced Palestinians in the Gaza Strip waited for news on Monday on a potential ceasefire in the hopes that they would soon be able to return to their homes.

Israel and Hamas are considering a new U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal that would pause the war, free Israeli hostages and send much-needed aid flooding into Gaza.

It also aims to open broader talks about ending the conflict.

“We’re waiting by the minute I swear,” said Ahlam Farwana, speaking from a displacement camp in Deir al-Balah.

"We’re suffering when getting water, suffering at charity kitchens, we’re suffering with everything."

Mohamed Abu Awda, a displaced Palestinian from Beit Hanoun, said he misses his home so deeply that he would return and set up a tent on the rubble if his house of 45 years had been destroyed.

“We’re here homeless. Displacement is not a second life. It's homelessness,” he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in Washington Monday to meet U.S. President Donald Trump, who has been pushing for aceasefire that might lead to an end to the 21-month war in Gaza.

Harvey Weinstein has been convicted at his New York City sexual assault trial.

He was found guilty of criminal sex act for assaulting production assistant Mimi Haleyi at his apartment in 2006 and third-degree rape of a woman in 2013.

The jury found him not guilty on the most serious charge, predatory sexual assault, that could have resulted in a life sentence.

The landmark reckoning for the former movie producer comes after years of whispers exploded into a torrent of sexual misconduct allegations that ended his reign in Hollywood and gave rise to the #MeToo movement.

The jury's verdict followed three weeks of testimony that included harrowing accounts of rapes, forced oral sex, groping, masturbation, lewd propositions and casting-couch excuses from Weinstein.

(3 Jan 2020) Mexico's former top security official on Friday pleaded not guilty to charges he accepted a fortune in drug-money bribes from kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's notorious Sinaloa cartel.

Genaro Garcia Luna entered the plea in a New York courtroom.

He has been indicted on charges of cocaine trafficking conspiracy and making false statements.

During his brief appearance, Garcia Luna shook his head "no" as prosecutors outlined the charges against him.

A judge ordered him detained after a prosecutor argued he'd be a flight risk.

Garcia Luna's lawyer said he'd seek bail at a later date.

Garcia Luna was viewed as the point man in then-President Felipe Calderon’s 2006-2012 war on drugs.

As public safety secretary, he was one of the most feared members of Calderon’s government, but for years was dogged by allegations about his ties to drug traffickers.

(5 Mar 2020) WEINSTEIN MOVED TO NYC JAIL AFTER HEART PROCEDURE

Harvey Weinstein was moved Thursday (5 MARCH 2020) to an infirmary unit at New York City's notorious Rikers Island jail complex after undergoing a heart procedure at the hospital where he'd been held since his conviction last month on rape and sexual assault charges.

Weinstein's spokesman, Juda Engelmayer, said that the former film producer's procedure Wednesday at Bellevue Hospital was "deemed successful," but Engelmayer wouldn't go into further detail. Weinstein was taken by ambulance to the North Infirmary Command on Rikers Island after doctors at the hospital deemed him fit enough to be moved there.

Weinstein, 67, was originally supposed to go to Rikers Island immediately after his Feb. 24 conviction, but he was detoured to Bellevue Hospital amid concerns about high blood pressure and heart palpitations. He was at the hospital for more than a week.

Weinstein's lawyer Arthur Aidala, who saw him at the hospital Thursday morning, said his client is "obviously not the picture of health."

In addition to the heart issues, Weinstein's lawyers have said he was also dealing with the ramifications of unsuccessful back surgery stemming from a car crash last summer and a condition that requires shots in his eyes so he does not go blind.

Weinstein used a walker to aid his movement in and out of the courthouse.

"He's obviously not happy where he is. But he's lucid and realistic about everything. He's still in a state of disbelief," Aidala said.

Weinstein is due back in court Wednesday for sentencing. He was convicted on one count of criminal sex act for forcibly performing oral sex on a woman in 2006 and one count of third-degree rape for a 2013 attack on another woman.

On the criminal sex act count, he faces a minimum of five years in prison and a maximum of 25 years in prison, while the third-degree rape count carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison. The judge could have the sentences run concurrently.

Weinstein was acquitted of predatory sexual assault charges that carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

After revoking Weinstein's bail when he was convicted, Judge James Burke made a judicial request to place him in the North Infirmary Command. There, the judge said, he'd have "something tantamount to protective custody."

Martin Horn, a former city corrections commissioner, said that despite its name, the infirmary is more like a regular jail than a hospital unit.

Built in 1932 as the original Rikers Island Hospital, the infirmary now has smaller, 10-cell blocks that are used for protective units for inmates who might be targets in general population, such as sex offenders and former law enforcement officers.

Horn said the city's jails have specialized units for the disabled but inmates with serious medical needs are often sent to the hospital ward at Bellevue.

U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres said Monday that the trial of guards Tova Noel and Michael Thomas can begin April 20.

They have pleaded not guilty to lying on prison records to make it seem as though they had made required checks on the financier before he was found unresponsive in his cell Aug. 10.

New York City's medical examiner ruled Epstein's death a suicide.

(11 Mar 2020) The 23-year sentence for rape and sexual assault that will send Harvey Weinstein to prison is bringing a sense of closure for many of his accusers.

Model Tarale Wulff, who says she was raped by Weinstein in 2005, said she never thought she would find healing.

Judge James Burke's sentence, she told journalists outside a Manhattan court on Wednesday, brought a sense of joy.

"I couldn't believe what I was about to hear," she said referring to hearing the judge say the world "twenty".

"No one thought we'd be here today. No one thought we'd -- Harvey would ever see a courtroom and even still, no one gave him more than 10 or 12 years," she added.

Accuser Ambra Battilana Gutierrez said she came forward to help others and felt happy "to be contributing to change."

Gutierrez, who was not involved in Weinstein's New York trial, says he assaulted her in 2015.

Weinstein, who has been accused of violating scores of women, was convicted last month of raping a once-aspiring actress in a New York City hotel room in 2013 and forcibly performing oral sex on former TV and film production assistant Mimi Haleyi at his apartment in 2006 and faced a maximum of 29 years in prison.

Weinstein was convicted on two counts: criminal sex act for the 2006 assault on the production assistant and rape in the third degree for a 2013 attack on another woman.

He was acquitted of the more serious charges against him of first-degree rape and two counts of predatory sexual assault.

Weinstein could get up to 28 years in prison on charges of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by use of force and sexual battery in the California case. Authorities have not said when he would go there to face those charges.

Three more sexual assault cases under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department and Beverly Hills' police could mean that he'll face additional charges. No details have been provided on these cases.
