La organización humanitaria Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo anunció el lunes la recuperación del nieto 140, un hombre que fue apropiado cuando era un recién nacido durante la última dictadura militar argentina que duró de 1976 a 1983.

El hombre que hoy tiene 48 años fue notificado de su verdadera identidad el viernes pasado, luego de que el Banco Nacional de Datos Genéticos lo comprobara tras cotejar sus muestras genéticas con las de sus familiares almacenadas en esa institución. Ahora ya está en contacto con su hermana Adriana Metz.

Abuelas calcula que cerca de 500 menores fueron robados durante operativos represivos o nacieron en centros ilegales de detención donde dieron a luz sus madres secuestradas. El hijo de Metz y Romero —cuyo nombre con el que fue criado no fue revelado por la organización— nació el 17 de abril de 1977 en el centro clandestino conocido como La Escuelita, situado en la ciudad sureña de Bahía Blanca, de acuerdo a testimonios de compañeros de cautiverio de su madre.

Recovery and cleanup efforts continued Monday as the death toll from catastrophic flooding in Texas over the July Fourth weekend surpassed 100.

The number of deaths reached at least 104 on Monday as a massive search continued for missing people.

Ringo Starr celebrated his 85th birthday on Sunday by continuing his annual tradition of spreading a message of “peace and love” — a mantra he’s shared with fans around the world every July 7 since 2008.

The Beatles drummer marked the occasion in Beverly Hills surrounded by family, friends, and fellow musicians. Among those in attendance were his wife Barbara Bach, son Zak Starkey, and longtime friend and Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh.

Bluegrass artist Molly Tuttle performed a special rendition of the Beatles’ 1969 hit “Octopus’ Garden,” a song written and sung by Starr.

"I'm proud we've created memories," Starr said of his time with the Beatles. "We were the best band in the world, and, you know, with the best writers in the world and we're still being played today. That's a pretty long time."

He added: "We did a great job and a lot of the songs were peace and love, 'Can't Buy Me Love.'"

Starr also shared a few thoughts on the upcoming series of Beatles biopics, with four separate films in development — each told from the perspective of a different band member. The project is being helmed by director Sam Mendes.

The humanitarian organization Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo announced on Monday the recovery of grandson 140, a man who was stolen as a newborn during Argentina's last military dictatorship (1976-1983) and who has been able to contact his sister, who tirelessly searched for him for years.

"We confirm once again that our grandsons and granddaughters are among us and that thanks to the constant work of these 47 years of struggle, they will continue to appear,” said Estela de Carlotto, president of Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo (May Square Grandmothers).

Alongside the elderly human rights leader was Adriana Metz, the sister of the man who has now recovered his identity.

The Abuelas group estimates that close to 500 minors were stolen during repressive operations or born in illegal detention centers where their kidnapped mothers gave birth.

Most were raised by repressors or in family environments sympathetic to the de facto regime, with their identities changed.

The last case announced in January was that of a woman, daughter of disappeared communist militants, who became the 139th grandson/granddaughter found.

The son of Raúl Metz and Graciela Romero —whose name he was raised with, was not revealed by Abuelas— was born on April 17, 1977, in the clandestine center known as La Escuelita, located in the southern city of Bahía Blanca.

Metz and Romero, militants of the Workers' Revolutionary Party—dissidents of the military regime—were kidnapped by security forces in December 1976 in the southern town of Cutral-Có, when Romero was five months pregnant.

STORYLINE:

A fire engulfed the main telecom company building in downtown Cairo on Monday, injuring at least 14 people and prompting a temporary outage of internet and mobile phone services, officials said.

The 14 injured people were taken to nearby hospitals, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

The fire started on the seventh floor of a landmark 10-story Telecom Egypt building in the Ramses area of Cairo, the governor's office said in a statement.

Ambulances and firetrucks were on site as plumes of dark smoke rose in downtown Cairo.

Firefighters put up ladders as firetrucks spewed water to contain the blaze, while security officials cordoned off the area.

The fire broke in an equipment room of Telecom Egypt and led to a temporary disruption of telecom services, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said in a statement.

Telecom services were expected to be restored within hours, the authority said. Online payment services were also disrupted.

The fire took place a few kilometers (miles) from where a deadly blaze at a train station in 2019 killed at least 25 people and injured at least 45 others after a collision caused a huge explosion.

STORYLINE:

Heavy winds, high temperatures and remnants left behind from the war are the main obstacles firefighters are facing as they try to extinguish one of Syria's worst wildfires in years, a Syrian Cabinet minister said on Monday.

The fires were are still difficult to control despite reinforcements from Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon that came to help fight the blazes.

Syrian Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed al-Saleh, said the main challenges were in two locations in the coastal province of Latakia that teams had been trying to control for two days.

He added that on the second day of the fire, they managed to get 90% under control but explosions from war remnants and heavy winds helped the fire spread again. He added that 120 teams were fighting the fires.

On Monday, the Lebanese army said it had sent two helicopters to help fight the blaze in coordination with Syrian authorities.

Over the weekend, United Nations (UN) teams also deployed to the Syrian coast where they conducted urgent assessments to determine the scale of the damage disaster and identify the most immediate humanitarian needs.

Summer fires are common in the eastern Mediterranean region, where experts warn that climate change is intensifying conditions.

Below-average rainfalls over the winter have also left Syrians struggling with water shortages this summer, as the springs and rivers that normally supply much of the population with drinking water have gone dry.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva hit back on Monday at recent threats from U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on countries that align themselves with BRICS.

The criticism came during a news conference after the conclusion of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, which brought together heads of state and top officials from the bloc's 11 member countries, along with invited partners, for two days of discussions.

On Sunday, Donald Trump stated on social media that he would impose an additional 10% tariff on any country that aligns itself with what he called “Anti-American” BRICS policies.

Lula criticized the American leader for using the internet to intimidate other nations.

"A president of a country the size of the United States to go around threatening the world on the internet, it’s not right,” Lula said. “We don't want an emperor.”

That was not the only mention of Brazil in Trump's posts.

On Monday, Trump again criticized Brazilian authorities over what he described as a “witch hunt” against former President Jair Bolsonaro, adding that he would be “closely monitoring” Bolsonaro’s trial.

Lula dismissed Trump’s remarks, saying he had “more important things to comment on” than the American leader’s posts about Bolsonaro.

“Go take care of your own life, not ours,” Lula said.

Turning back to the summit, Lula described BRICS as a new model that demands greater care, emphasizing that the bloc is not a closed group or a club of privileged nations.

It’s a group of countries looking to create a different way to organize the world, economically, in terms of development, and in terms of human relations. Something new needs to be done, including regarding artificial intelligence," Lula added.
