Celebrity attorney Michael Avenatti says he is confident he will be "fully exonerated" of federal extortion and bank and wire fraud charges.

He told reporters late Monday (25MARCH19) he will "never stop fighting the good fight" against powerful people and corporations.

Avenatti spoke after appearing in federal court on extortion charges.

He was released on a 300,000 US dollar bond.

Avenatti was arrested earlier Monday after federal authorities accused him of trying to extort millions of dollars from Nike.

He allegedly threatened to hold a news conference and release damaging allegations against the company if Nike didn't pay him up to 25 million US dollars.

Avenatti also faces federal bank and wire fraud charges in Los Angeles.

He's accused of embezzling a client's money to pay his own expenses and making false representations to a bank.

2.Italy has reportedly arrested a Chinese citizen for links with a Chinese government-sponsored hacking group that allegedly carried out cyberespionage on American universities and researchers during COVID. Do you have any comments?

I am not aware of the specific situation you mentioned. As a principle, I would like to emphasize that China is a staunch defender of cybersecurity, as well as the biggest victim of cyberattacks. We firmly oppose malicious smear on China under the pretext of so-called cyber issues and any acts of entrapment against Chinese citizens under this pretext. We urge the Italian side to take concrete measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the Chinese citizen involved.

3. China has just released news about Australian Prime Minister Albanese's visit to China. Could you provide some background and China's expectations for this visit?

Prime Minister Albanese's visit comes as the China-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership enters its second decade. Under the guidance of the leaders of both countries and through joint efforts, China-Australia relations have continued to improve and develop. China is willing to work with Australia to take this visit as an opportunity to strengthen communication, enhance mutual trust, expand practical cooperation, and promote the forward development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Australia.

Initial reports from emergency services say that seven men, all Spaniards, have suffered minor injuries after the second day of the Pamplona San Fermin bull run.

The bulls quickly ran through the streets of Pamplona in northern Spain, causing many falls amongst the thousands of runners.

One bull became separated from the pack and tossed a participant.

The early morning “encierros,” or bull runs, are the highlight of the festival with thousands of brave or foolhardy souls sprint to avoid six bulls charging along a winding cobblestoned route to the city’s bullring.

Gorings are not rare.

But many more people suffer contusions from falls as spectators watch from balconies and wooden barricades set up along the course.

The spectacle is televised nationally.

The rest of each day is for eating, drinking, dancing and cultural entertainment, including bull-fights where the animals that run in the morning are slaughtered for sport each afternoon.

The festival was made internationally famous by Ernest Hemingway’s classic 1926 novel “The Sun Also Rises” about American bohemians wasting away in Europe.

Foreign tourists are trickling back to China after the country loosened its visa policy to unprecedented levels.

Citizens from 74 countries can now enter China for up to 30 days without a visa, a big jump from previous regulations.

The government has been steadily expanding visa-free entry in a bid to boost tourism, the economy and its soft power.

“This really helps people to travel because (the) visa is such a hassle,” said Georgi Shavadze, a Georgian living in Austria, said on a recent visit to the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.

While most tourist sites are still packed with far more domestic tourists than foreigners, travel companies and tour guides are now bracing for a bigger influx in anticipation of summer holiday goers coming to China.

“I’m practically overwhelmed with tours and struggling to keep up” said Gao Jun, a veteran English-speaking tour guide with over 20 years of experience.

To meet growing demand, he launched a new business to train anyone interested in becoming an English-speaking tour guide. “I just can’t handle them all on my own,” he said.

After lifting COVID-19 restrictions, China reopened its borders to tourists in early 2023, but only 13.8 million people visited in 2023, less than half the 31.9 million in 2019, the last year before the pandemic.

In December 2023, China announced visa-free entry for citizens of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia.

STORYLINE:

Japan’s Emperor Naruhito met with Mongolia's president Tuesday during a visit to the landlocked Asian nation that marks a step toward closer relations between the democracies in a region dominated by Russia and China.

Naruhito met with President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh after a welcome ceremony in Mongolia's capital Ulaanbaatar on the second day of a weeklong visit.

Japan has made a priority of boosting trade with the sprawling nation of 3.5 million, whose resources of coal, copper and other minerals are largely exported to China.

In the afternoon, Naruhito plans to lay flowers at a cenotaph in honor of thousands of Japanese prisoners of World War II who were held under harsh conditions in the country. Naruhito’s visit marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the war.

Some historians say one of the first battles of the war was a clash in the summer of 1939 between invading Japanese troops and Soviet forces on the Mongolian frontier, in which the Japanese were badly defeated.

In recent years, Naruhito has toured some of the places where the bloodiest battles and bombings of World War II occurred, including Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Hiroshima.

The emperor has said it’s part of his effort at atonement and remembrance of the tragedy of war fought in the name of his grandfather, Emperor Hirohito. While the vast majority of Japanese prisoners of war were taken to Siberia, around 12,000 to 14,000 ended up in Mongolia, which by war's end was fighting alongside the Russians against Japan.
