STORYLINE:

A prominent Hong Kong businessman was sentenced to three years in prison on Monday and fined $400,000 after he was convicted of paying bribes to the presidents of two African countries.

U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska sentenced Dr. Chi Ping Patrick Ho, who is also an ophthalmologist and was once Hong Kong's home affairs secretary.

Ho was convicted in December of paying bribes to the presidents of Chad and Uganda in a scheme to secure oil rights for an energy conglomerate known as CEFC China Energy.

Lawyers for Ho insisted at trial that payments to the presidents were legitimate charitable donations. The payments included $2 million in gift boxes delivered to Chad's president in 2014.

Ho was charged in New York City by authorities who cited meetings and wire transfers in Manhattan related to the bribes.

Prosecutors had recommended Ho serve five years. Defense lawyers said his 16 months behind bars as a model inmate were enough.

Defense lawyers said in a pre-sentence submission that Ho "deeply regrets" his actions.

They said their client has tutored fellow inmates at a downtown Manhattan lockup on subjects "ranging from geography to personal finance."

During a weeklong trial, prosecutors said Ho approached the presidents of Chad and Uganda on behalf of CEFC China Energy after growing accustomed to using money to entice foreign officials to help the company expand its business.

(12 Feb 2019) Jury deliberations resumed Tuesday at the U.S. trial of notorious Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

This is the sixth day of deliberations, after the jury went home Monday without reaching a verdict.

AP reporter Claudia Torrens has been covering the trial since it started. She says Guzman again appeared upbeat Monday when making a brief appearance in court.

He smiled as he shook hands with his lawyers and waved to his wife, who was in her usual spot in the gallery, sporting a bright yellow blazer.

The jury in federal court in Brooklyn was silent for most of the day Monday before sending two notes to the judge. One asked to review law enforcement testimony about seizures of Colombian cocaine being shipped to the Sinaloa cartel to fuel a smuggling empire prosecutors say was under Guzman's command.

The other note asked if jurors have to be unanimous on whether the government has proven several elements of the case's top conspiracy count to reach a verdict on that count. They've been instructed that they need full agreement on at last three of those elements.

The second note was the first whiff of disagreement in the jury room. Most signs have pointed to jurors taking a methodical approach to reaching verdicts on 10 separate counts after hearing trial testimony that lasted nearly three months.

Guzman, 61, was extradited to the U.S. in 2017 for the trial, which could end in a life sentence. The defense has accused prosecution cooperators of making him a scapegoat for their own crimes.

(12 Feb 2019) Mexico's most notorious drug lord, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, was convicted Tuesday of running an industrial-scale smuggling operation after a three-month trial packed with Hollywood-style tales of grisly killings, political payoffs, cocaine hidden in jalapeno cans, jewel-encrusted guns and a naked escape with his mistress through a tunnel.

Guzman listened to a drumbeat of guilty verdicts on drug and conspiracy charges that could put the 61-year-old escape artist behind bars for decades in a maximum-security U.S. prison selected to thwart another one of the breakouts that made him a folk hero in his native country.

After the verdict was read, Guzman after verdict turned and faced his wife Emma Coronel Aispuro and gave her two thumbs up.

U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue said the trial has pulled back the curtain on international drug dealing.

Evidence showed drugs poured into the U.S. through secret tunnels or hidden in tanker trucks, concealed in the undercarriage of passenger cars and packed in rail cars passing through legitimate points of entry — suggesting that a border wall wouldn't be much of a worry

STORYLINE:

TV actress Allison Mack has pleaded guilty in a case involving a cult-like group based in upstate New York.

Mack entered her plea to racketeering charges on Monday, shortly before federal jury selection was scheduled to start in Brooklyn federal court.

The trial is expected to detail sensational allegations that the group, called NXIVM (NEHK'-see-uhm), recruited sex slaves for its spiritual leader, Keith Raniere.

Raniere and three co-defendants including heiress Clare Bronfman and TV actress Allison Mack have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and other charges in the sex-trafficking case.

Prosecutors accused Mack of helping Raniere recruit women to a secret sub-society within the group.

Authorities say the women were branded by a surgical tool with a symbol that resembled Raniere's initials.

Mack has said in an interview that the group emphasized self-discipline and self-empowerment and she likened the branding to getting a tattoo, but cooler.

The defense says the women were never abused.

Celebrity attorney Michael Avenatti says he is confident he will be "fully exonerated" of federal extortion and bank and wire fraud charges.

He told reporters late Monday he will "never stop fighting the good fight" against powerful people and corporations.

Avenatti spoke after appearing in federal court on extortion charges.

He was released on a 300,000 US dollar bond.

Avenatti was arrested earlier Monday after federal authorities accused him of trying to extort millions of dollars from Nike.

He allegedly threatened to hold a news conference and release damaging allegations against the company if Nike didn't pay him up to 25 million US dollars.

Avenatti also faces federal bank and wire fraud charges in Los Angeles.

He's accused of embezzling a client's money to pay his own expenses and making false representations to a bank.
