STORYLINE:

Hundreds of people gathered near the Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima on Wednesday to release candle-lit lanterns into the river, marking 80 years since the US atomic bombing of the western Japanese city.

People gathered on the river banks to pray for peace and wrote personal wishes on the paper lanterns before releasing them down Motoyasu River.

Hiroshima resident Mieko Nishimura said she and her 8-year-old daughter wished for world peace.

Her great-grandmother died in the atomic bombing 80 years ago, and she said August 6 is an important day for her family every year.

“This year in particular I feel grateful for us to be all alive,” she said.

About 55,000 people, including representatives from a record 120 countries and regions, including Russia and Belarus, attended a memorial service held on Wednesday morning at the city’s Memorial Peace Park.

The 80th anniversary comes at a time when possession of nuclear weapons for deterrence is increasingly supported by the international community, including Japan.

The bombing of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, destroyed the city and killed 140,000 people. A second bomb dropped three days later on Nagasaki killed 70,000.

Japan surrendered on Aug. 15, ending World War II and Japan’s nearly half-century of aggression in Asia.

STORYLINE:

Every afternoon, like clockwork, 81-year-old Nelida Perez starts her slow walk along the cobblestone streets of Old Havana, closely followed by dozens of hungry cats.

For years, Nelida has taken it upon herself to feed some of the street cats that roam this part of town, which is also one of the most popular tourist spots in the capital. She said she used to be able to feed the cats with her own food or food donated by nearby restaurants, but as the situation in the country worsened, she had to rely more and more on tourists to give money to buy food. However, even that has become harder with fewer tourists visiting the island.

“I have never in my life asked anyone for a plate of food to feed my cats. And now I see myself in difficulties because there is no tourism and there is an economic crisis, we’re down, but we’ll go up,” said Perez.

Since 2020, Cuba has faced a worsening economic crisis, driven by COVID-19 shutdowns, stricter U.S. economic sanctions, and a 2021 internal currency unification reform that led to inflation.

Shortages of all kinds of goods, including medicines, power outages, and long lines for gasoline, are a daily reality on the island. If the crisis has been tough on people, animals are suffering even more.
