STORYLINE:

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Japan’s western city Hiroshima on the 80th anniversary of the city’s atomic bombing.

The protesters called for the abolition of nuclear weapons and an end to wars in front of the Atomic Bomb Dome as the memorial service took place by the cenotaph on the other side of the Peace Memorial Park.

Protesters defied local authorities’ request for them to leave the park.

According to the local media reports, one man was arrested in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on suspicion of assaulting a security guard.

Wednesday's anniversary comes at a time when possession of nuclear weapons for deterrence is increasingly supported by the international community, including Japan. 

Some survivors said they were disappointed by U.S. President Donald Trump recently justifying Washington's attack on Iran in June by comparing it to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the mild response from the Japanese government.

About 55,000 people, including representatives from a record 120 countries and regions, including Russia and Belarus, were expected to attend the ceremony. A minute of silence was held while a peace bell rang out at 8:15 a.m., the time when a U.S. B-29 dropped the bomb on the city.

STORYLINE:

More than 50,000 people from Bolivia and neighboring Peru make a pilgrimage to Copacabana, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, to honor Bolivia’s patron saint, Our Lady of Copacabana.

In the main event of the celebration, a replica of the wooden-carved figure of the Virgin Mary leads a procession.

The celebration marks the 100th anniversary since her canonical coronation as the patron saint of Bolivia by a papal bull issued by Pius XII.

Our Lady of Copacabana’s basilica has safeguarded this Virgin Mary figure since the late 16th century.

Her history dates back to 1583, when Inca descendant Francisco Tito Yupanqui crafted a figure in her honor.

According to the legend, Yupanqui had a dream about the Virgin and molded a clay figure to depict her. He showed it to the chaplain, but after being rejected and mocked, he went for a walk by the lake. There, he encountered the image of the Virgin as an Inca maiden.

Inspired by the apparition, Yupanqui set off for the city of Potosí, about 330 miles (530 kilometers) from La Paz, the current capital city. There, he carved the image that is now revered in the basilica from a maguey tree trunk.

When Yupanqui traveled back to Copacabana, the town was under Spanish occupation, and both the Aymara and Quechua Indigenous people — now nationals from Bolivia and Peru — were at the site for evangelization purposes.

Several masses in her honor are celebrated daily starting Aug. 4.

In a nearby chapel, parishioners light candles — one per miracle requested — and patiently wait for them to burn out before leaving.

The Department of Health and Human Services will cancel contracts and pull funding for some vaccines that are being developed to fight respiratory viruses like COVID-19 and the flu.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Tuesday that 22 projects, totaling $500 million, to develop vaccines using mRNA technology will be halted.

Kennedy's decision to terminate the projects is the latest in a string of decisions that have put the longtime vaccine critic's doubts about shots into full effect at the nation's health department. Kennedy has pulled back recommendations around the COVID-19 shots, fired the panel that makes vaccine recommendations, and refused to offer a vigorous endorsement of vaccinations as a measles outbreak worsened.

The health secretary criticized mRNA vaccines in a video on his social media accounts, explaining the decision to cancel projects being led by the nation's leading pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer and Moderna, that offer protection against viruses like the flu, COVID-19 and H5N1.

Kennedy, in Anchorage, Alaska on Tuesday, further explained why he says new vaccines in development at the National Institute of Health, will be an improvement.

"It's a vaccine that mimics natural immunity. And it and it is effective against any kind of mutation. But it doesn't drive the virus to mutate. And it could be effective. STORYLINE:

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Japan’s western city Hiroshima on the 80th anniversary of the city’s atomic bombing.

The protesters called for the abolition of nuclear weapons and an end to wars in front of the Atomic Bomb Dome as the memorial service took place by the cenotaph on the other side of the Peace Memorial Park.

Protesters defied local authorities’ request for them to leave the park.

According to the local media reports, one man was arrested in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on suspicion of assaulting a security guard.

Wednesday's anniversary comes at a time when possession of nuclear weapons for deterrence is increasingly supported by the international community, including Japan. 

Some survivors said they were disappointed by U.S. President Donald Trump recently justifying Washington's attack on Iran in June by comparing it to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the mild response from the Japanese government.

About 55,000 people, including representatives from a record 120 countries and regions, including Russia and Belarus, were expected to attend the ceremony. A minute of silence was held while a peace bell rang out at 8:15 a.m... [truncated]
