Associated Press reporter Eric Tucker says Maxwell’s lawyers said so in a court filing Tuesday, writing that Maxwell hasn’t seen the material herself.

 

“She says the material amounts to hearsay and it's not material that should be seen by the general public,” Tucker said.

 

The grand jury process is conducted behind closed doors.

STORYLINE:

Hundreds of activists and people with disabilities took to the streets of Argentina's capital Buenos Aires on Tuesday to protest President Javier Milei's vetoes on pension and disability spending increases.

Milei, a Libertarian, on Monday vetoed an attempt to increase spending on pensions and a law expanding protections for people with disabilities, saying the legislation would have undermined his flagship pledge to eliminate the country’s chronic fiscal deficit before October’s midterm elections.

Some of the protesters were transported in wheelchairs, others struggled to stand on crutches, while several were unable to express themselves due to neurological conditions.

During the protest in front of the Argentine Congress, many shared their fear that their situation would worsen as a result of Milei's decision to veto a law that sought to strengthen the assistance system that is meant to protect them.

They called on lawmakers to insist on the bill they passed in July, declaring an emergency in the benefits system for people with disabilities and demanding improved funding.

Similar protests took place in other cities across the country.

Milei's administration argued that Congress passed the measures without identifying how they would be funded, calling the bills inconsistent with his mandate to eliminate the fiscal deficit.

The vetoed spending, including a proposed 7.2% pension hike, would have represented nearly 1% of GDP this year and more next, threatening Milei’s goal of balancing the budget ahead of October’s midterm elections.

STORYLINE:

A group of demonstrators gathered on Friday in front of the U.S. General Consulate to protest the 50% tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on Brazilian exports.

Organized by unions and left-wing social movements, the protest voiced strong criticism of both Trump and Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro, while expressing support for President Lula and Brazil’s sovereignty.

Some protesters wore costumes resembling Trump and Bolsonaro depicted in signs as aligned with both leaders.

Banners also demanded that Bolsonaro’s trial for allegedly attempting a coup remain a priority.

Trump’s tariffs, set to take effect on August 6, exclude certain products like orange juice and aircraft parts.

While Lula says he remains open to negotiation with the U.S., he made it clear that Bolsonaro’s legal situation is not part of any deal.

STORYLINE:

Health officials in Gaza said Israeli forces opened fire Tuesday morning toward Palestinians seeking aid and in targeted attacks in central and southern Gaza, killing at least 45 people.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military, which has said after previous shootings around aid distribution that it only fired warning shots at people who approached its forces.

The dead include at least 26 people killed in the Morag Corridor, an Israeli military zone where looters and desperate crowds unloaded UN aid convoys.

Another six were killed in Teina, near a road leading to a site run by the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an American contractor.

Morgue records at the nearby Nasser Hospital, which received the bodies, detailed the deaths and locations.

The hospital is part of the Health Ministry, which doesn’t distinguish between militants and civilians but says roughly half the dead from the war have been women and children.

The ministry operates under the Hamas government.

The UN and other international organizations see it as the most reliable source of casualty data.

The humanitarian group Utopia 56 staged a protest Tuesday night outside Paris City Hall with about 200 migrants, including families, to demand emergency shelter and denounce public policies they describe as “increasingly aggressive” toward homeless people.

Among them was Rose, a migrant from the Democratic Republic of Congo who has been in France for three years. “We were raped and tortured back home. We came here to escape, but now we are abandoned,” she said. “We sleep in metro stations, on the streets, in churches. We haven’t eaten, and some of us are sick.”

Utopia 56 says 350,000 people are currently homeless in France, up from 190,000 in 2017. The group points to the removal of 6,500 emergency shelter beds in the 2025 budget and notes that 25,000 evictions took place last year. It claims that France’s emergency hotline, 115, answers only 12% of calls in Paris, with no guarantee of housing even when calls are answered.

Nathan Lepreux, Utopia 56 coordinator, said the gathering included 210 people 90 children, about 30 of them under age three and around 40 single women. “These are the most vulnerable on the streets: single women, babies, pregnant women… all of them left outside by the state,” he said.

STORYLINE:

A group of 40 Brazilian lawmakers said on Tuesday they will push for an amnesty bill and a pardon to former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is on trial for allegedly plotting a coup after losing the 2022 election.

The reaction from representatives came after Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered house arrest against Bolsonaro.

Representatives allied to Bolsonaro were speaking in front of the congress in the capital Brasilia.

Justice Moraes, who oversees the case against Bolsonaro before the top court, said in his decision that the 70-year-old former president had violated precautionary measures imposed on him by spreading content through his three lawmaker sons.

The representatives' announcement followed protests in Sao and Rio de Janeiro on Monday.

Thousands of sympathizers of the former president took to the streets pleading Brazil's Congress to pardon him, along with hundreds of others who are either under trial or jailed for their roles in the destruction of government buildings in Brasilia on Jan. 8, 2023.

On Sunday, Bolsonaro addressed supporters in Rio through the phone of one of his sons, which de Moraes' described as illegal.

Bolsonaro's lawyers said in a statement that he will appeal the decision.

They said his words "good afternoon, Copacabana, good afternoon my Brazil, a hug to everyone, this is for our freedom" — broadcast from a cell phone of one of his sons during a Sunday protest in Rio de Janeiro — cannot “be regarded as ignoring precautionary measures or as a criminal act."

Ozzy Osbourne died of a heart attack and had coronary artery disease in addition to suffering from Parkinson’s disease for years, his death certificate said.

The singer had suffered from coronary artery disease as well as Parkinson’s, according to the certificate filed at a register office in London and obtained by The New York Times on Tuesday. Osbourne died on July 22 at 76.

An email from The Associated Press requesting confirmation from the registry office in Hillingdon Council in northwest London, which covers the district where the Black Sabbath singer was reportedly officially pronounced dead, was not immediately returned. Osbourne’s representatives didn’t immediately return the AP’s emailed requests for comment.

The document was submitted by Osbourne’s daughter Aimée Osbourne the New York Times reported. Osbourne died of “(a) Out of hospital cardiac arrest (b) Acute myocardial infarction (c) Coronary artery disease and Parkinson’s disease with autonomic dysfunction (Joint Causes),” the certificate states.

OFFICIALS SAID THEY EXPECTED MORE HELICOPTERS TO BE ABLE TO DELIVER SIGNIFICANT WATER DROPS ON TUESDAY WITH A DRONE DOING RECONNAISSANCE.
